Uruguay with 77% possession after 20 minutes.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

30 May 16:34

Thanks

30 May 16:43

bugger. 0-1 at 40 minutes

Kotahitanga. We are one.

30 May 16:51

oranges. Uruguay 11 shots to 2 and 61% possession.

The guys are playing well but Uruguay are clearly more dangerous and seem to have things under control. Not much threat from us so far but I guess there is always a chance as we build up OK - but get closed down at the pointy end. The defence will have its work cut out holding it to 1 in the 2nd half but if they can it will get more and more interesting as the game progresses.

Yep, not really been in this one (yet :-)

Shame for Zwetsloot - could be an ACL

It's interesting to see, that despite our second 11 having clearly less technical ability than the 11 that started the first two games, they still try to play decent football. Yeah there's a lot of misplaced passes and players getting knocked off the ball too easily, but it's good to see that the team as a whole still isn't panicking and resorting to continual long balls as per every other NZ football game I've watched in my life.

30 May 17:55

Unlucky at the end. We had some good chances later. Could have easily been 1-1. Ah well - now all guns blazing or Colombia.

30 May 18:02

I thought the second half was much better from NZ - created a couple good chances and could have pinched a 1-1 draw. Their 2nd goal was a sucker punch. I'm still a big fan of how we tried to play from the back and keep the ball.

Singh made a good change to the team, found gaps in the line.

30 May 18:04

Erling Haaland, who our defense completely shut down in the game against Norway, just put NINE past Honduras in a 12-0 win

I suspect that 11 had never played together either, so can't expect the same level as the team that have won the first 2? Looking forward to Columbia and I wonder if they are happy they stay there and not have to travel 6 hours. heard the previous trip took 10 hours as traffic so bad, so maybe a blessing in disguise to focus on the round of 16

Better 2nd half & had a few chances. Gave the ball away cheaply at times but still good to be competitive with the joint 3rd fav's.

Think we can do well against Colombia.

Trevor's knee looks to only be a sprain at this stage, so that's positive.

I though Bell had his worse game of the tournament with a few give aways, but still looks a real players who loves to get on the ball. NIX, please get him. Wilkins also looked good in the attacking third, got outside his man a couple times, just didn't link up with Embingge as well as we would have liked.

I don't think anyone commanded to start next game... so it will be interesting to see who starts out of Waine and Mata on Monday.

Mata will definitely start. Hard for him to command a start when he’s not playing with Just, McCowatt and Singh. He’s a better player than Waine and the captain of the side

Bell is captain. Only stand in captain is Mata

Oh I may be wrong, but thought Mata was captain for qualifiers. And he kept the armband this morning even when Bell came on, which made me believe he was the skipper

We have a really good team here that are operating at a very high level. Sure, we lost, but we lost doing the right things and the majority of even our second string physically and technically capable of performing against one of the best teams in the world.

Like @AlfStamp has repeatedly said (for some time now); our kids are being taught how to play the right way, from an early age. As a result they grow up being physically capable of executing proper technique.

Like @djtim3000 said, we stuck to our principles.

Andreas Heraf and Anthony Hudson didn't think we could play proper football. They both had a damagingly patronising attitude towards our football nation and our society. Contrast that to Buckingham, Greenacre, Emblen, Edge, Figuera, etc who know that we can do it. And on that note, I want to give credit to this forum, the majority of whom saw right through Hudson and the tripe that he had us playing.

Bazely was the last U20s coach and I thought even then they played horrific with the talent we had. I'm sure there were possibly better players overlooked for selection with the last set of coaches, I thought the Danny Hay coached U17's played really well at the time and now they're the players at this FIFA U20 tournament.

31 May 00:44

However this tournament ends for NZ I think it is imperative that Buckingham is resigned to carry through the next lot...

Although, that been said I wouldn't mind him taking on the development officer role for NZ.

By the way Tahiti lost all 3 of their games, without scoring a goal.

3-0 to Senegal

5-0 to Poland

6-0 to Colombia

Still a way to go for the other OFC nations.

At least they didn't concede 12!

Looks like Columbia have Alvarado suspended for the next game against us. Two yellow cards. Not sure of his quality but he has played ever minute for them so far in midfield.

Portugal are the best squad on paper by a country mile, would hate to draw them if they somehow fall to 3rd. Have several Premier League regulars and full internationals. Feel we can take on most other squads there, would love an Ecuador, Saudi or Panama

Looks like 3rd place qualifiers are Poland, Ecuador, Nigeria, Panama  - (Portugal miss out on same goal difference as Panama but less goals scored.

* If we'd won the group would have played Ecuador

** Age group football is far less predicable than the "senior" teams so the "weaker" teams are often over priced in my opinion.

31 May 20:42

not sure why we didn't go all out to win the group

Normo's coming home

31 May 20:47

So, the route to the final is now clear :-)

 - Beat Colombia we play winner of Ukraine/Panama

 - Beat them & we play either of Italy/Poland or Argentina/Mali

Jeez, I havent felt this excited putting my wall chart planner together since Scotland qualified for Argentina in '78 !

It's probably worked out better this way. Colombia or Ecuador are much of a muchness, but this way if we win the Round 16 game we play the winner of Ukraine v Panama for a very realistic shot at the semi. On the other side it would've been winner of France v USA.

Hard to compare - different teams.

Mata is the better player IMO and more experienced.

01 Jun 10:33

Oh well it was good why'll it lasted. Just getting out of the group stage was impressive we just have to look forward to the Olympic games now as we wont beat Columbia.

Did I miss something? Why do we not have a chance vs Colombia - you think they are that much better than the teams we have played so far?

I think Heraf has hijacked his account.

If they keep the nerves under control they have every chance.

Gosh, thought I'd been in a coma for a few days & missed the game when I read the first sentence.

Maybe we'll win, maybe we wont but I believe that this group can go toe to toe with anyone at this competition & have a good chance of getting a result if the team performs at its peak.

With that said, there are no "gimmes" either way & any game can be decided on an opponents individual piece of brilliance, an individual mistake or maybe penalties. Should penalties be required I'm not in the camp that "its a lottery" as if it requires skill & mindset. I believe this team has both of those qualities.
