Jay Herdman (Vancouver Whitecaps, Canada U20 international, son of John), Tyler Bindon (LAFC, USA U19 international, son of Jenny) and potentially Mat Dibley-Dias (Fulham) set to be involved
ah, shame - both were preliminary options, but neither Bindon nor Dibley-Dias in the final squad. Dibley-Dias has certainly talked with NZF regarding youth representation, and I’d wager we’re where his international future lies. Apologies for that
Herdman there though - he seems very promising, 17 games in the MLS Next Pro (same league as Zwetsloot).
Raphael Lea’i stands a very good chance of being the best player at the entire tournament, along with Surman et al.
4 GKs I note - bit strange, is it not?
Full squad:
Joseph KNOWLES, Jackson JARVIE, Adam SUPYK, Isaac HUGHES, Finn SURMAN, Fin CONCHIE, Noah KARUNARATNE, Jackson MANUEL, Oliver COLLOTY, Jay HERDMAN, Oliver FAY, Oscar MASON, Lukas KELLY-HEALD, Marco LORENZ, Aaryan RAJ, Dan MCKAY, Sebastian BARTON-GINGER, Charlie BEALE, Kian DONKERS, Josh RUDLAND, Theo ETTEMA, Everton O’LEARY, Henry GRAY, Wilson SOUPHANTHAVONG, Chase TAYLOR, Regan DIVER

Would be excited to watch Dibley-Dias play

Interesting that Herdman is there, he must be a very proud kiwi, as you'd think Canada would be keeping an eye on him.

Or just realistically knows that for international football, NZ is an easier road than Canada with it's 38M plus popn. Nothing wrong with that.
I'm sure his dad is well aware of whatever Canuck talent his son would be competing against. And from Wiki the family were in NZ for about 8 years (2003-2011), so yeah would have fairly strong ties to Godzone.
Be nice also pick up Vaughan Coveny's son at some point.

Yep, definitely very interesting, but a pleasant surprise. Was in the second-to-last Canada U20 squad, just a few months ago, and just missed out on selection to the 2022 CONCACAF U20 Championship squad - maybe a bit of resentment? Must be a unique situation with your dad as the big boss
Also, feel it's important to note that 14 out of the 27-man squad are currently in the Wellington Phoenix setup. Reckon that togetherness will prove important in the tough conditions
The squad lists for all 11 nations taking part in the OFC U-19 Championship 2022 in Tahiti next month have been confirmed.
The tournament runs from September 8-25 (New Zealand time), with the top two teams qualifying through to represent Oceania at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023™.
Among those named for the tournament is Solomon Islands striker Raphael Lea’i, who earlier this year was named Player of the Tournament at the Oceania Qualifiers in Qatar after a string of stunning displays which helped his side to the final.
Others taking part back in their age-group after travelling with their national senior team this year are Fiji’s Nabill Begg, who made his debut in Qatar in a friendly against Vanuatu, and Tahitian keeper Anapa Debruyne.
New Zealand, who have won the past two additions of the tournament, are coached by New Zealand senior team assistant Darren Bazeley, while the Cook Islands are coached by Alan Taylor, who coached the country’s senior team in Qatar.
"They asked if I would take part, even though I was only 14 at the time and it was an under-20 tournament. I saw it simply as a chance to go on holiday because my grandmother was ill at the time in Samoa. It was a chance to go back and see her on expenses as the Samoans were paying for all my flights, accommodation and living expenses. I could not have cared less about playing for them. It was a men's tournament and I never expected to play."
—Cahill, speaking in 2002, on representing Western Samoa in 1994.[82]
1-1 fulltime against Fiji U19 today. Only managed to catch the second half where NZ dominated possession but just wasn't able to create any meaningful attacks apart from in the 63rd Minute when an NZ player was fouled inside the box resulting in a penalty which was calmly converted by 17 year old Kian Donkers.
Overall pretty promising signs heading into the qualifiers considering they were missing Surman , Karunaratne , Manuel and Lorenz who were all away with the nixs first team.
The team will be captained by Finn Surman, one of eleven Wellington Phoenix players in the squad. The side also features players from National League clubs: Auckland United, Birkenhead United, Cashmere Technical, Eastern Suburbs, Melville United, Miramar Rangers, Napier City Rovers, Waterside Karori and Wellington Olympic.
The only player named in the squad not currently based in New Zealand is midfielder Jay Herdman, son of Canada men’s head coach John Herdman, who plays for Vancouver Whitecaps.
The full 23-person squad is:
Sebastian Barton-Ginger, Wellington Phoenix Charlie Beale, Wellington Phoenix Oliver Colloty, Melville United Fin Conchie, Wellington Phoenix Kian Donkers, Cashmere Technical Theo Ettema, Wellington Olympic Oliver Fay, Auckland United Henry Gray, Waterside Karori Jay Herdman, Vancouver Whitecaps Isaac Hughes, Wellington Phoenix Jackson Jarvie, Eastern Suburbs Noah Karunaratne, Wellington Phoenix Lukas Kelly-Heald, Wellington Phoenix Joseph Knowles, Eastern Suburbs Marco Lorenz, Wellington Phoenix Oscar Mason, Napier City Rovers Jackson Manuel, Wellington Phoenix Dan McKay, Wellington Phoenix Everton O'Leary, Birkenhead United Aaryan Raj, Eastern Suburbs Adam Supyk, Wellington Phoenix Wilson Souphanthavong, Miramar Rangers Finn Surman, Wellington Phoenix
“After 2020 had to be cancelled due to Covid-19, I’m really pleased to finally be able to name the squad for this tournament and get our age group activity back underway” says head coach Darren Bazeley.
“This is a strong group with a lot of potential, many of which have been playing a good number of minutes in the National League. It is now up to them to prove it on the international stage.”
The team will depart for Tahiti on Monday 5 September apart from Eastern Suburbs players Jackson Jarvie, Joseph Knowles and Aaryan Raj who will be taking part in the Chatham Cup final on 11 September against Auckland City before joining up with the squad.
In addition to the 23 players named, Regan Diver (Northern Rovers), Josh Rudland (Wellington Phoenix) and Chase Taylor (Birkenhead United) will be non-travelling reserves.
Group A Only Australia, who are no longer affiliated with OFC, have won this competition more times than seven-time winners New Zealand and the reigning champions will be strong favourites again in 2022.
However, they will face a tough challenge against the Solomon Islands, even if they will be without star player Raphael Lea’i.

hm - an indication that he's heading over to Turkey now?
I heard that Lea'i himself didn't have the visa issues that prevented him trialling last month, it was his entourage apparently. Heard he was going to go solo in December - sounds like things may have changed with the reports that they've agreed terms already
7 from Nix, and with Jay Herdman based overseas, only three starters from truly domestic clubs.
Love the impetus the Nix have put into the youth space, but can certainly understand accusations of favouritism or having a domestic monopoly. Auckland A-League club soon, please...
