New Zealand U-23s - Quali Whites

Des can do no wrong!

Really good result, sounds like we could have won it too. Both sides missing key players, but with Aussie having a lot of A-League players available, they'll likely feel a bit more disheartened about the result.

Good to see us competing on the International stage once more. Let's hope it continues

Not much of a crowd it seems.

NZF funded?

Sarcasm Andrew. Esp in light of rumours they flew in Euro based players in economy.

To be fair responsibility of hosts FFA really to provide coverage.

Not so much rumour as fact – economy flights have been standard practice for age-group teams for forever *(they're what Fifa provide for qualified nations to age-group World Cups, for example).

Great highlights. By the look of those we might well have won by several. If only some of those balls into the box had found their man.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Total speculation but. Declan Edge was going on about his boys should be flying first class for these games, NZF had them in economy. Declan has a point about player welfare, but NZF probably hamstrung by budget.

Looks like NZF and and Declan couldn't come to an agreement and the boys didn't travel. Shame. Wilkins isn't getting any game time and Just the odd cameo off the bench at Helsingor.

What's wrong with the fire exit row? Surely Just's small frame would get enough leg room there. Would admittedly less so.

Not a problem for FFA I guess, only Gersbach in the Olyroos has flown in from overseas.

don't think its the seat, more like the 20-30 hours traveling each way. I've done NZ - London direct a couple of times and I know I wouldn't want to get off play a game of football and then do the same trip a couple of days later

and for a effectively meaningless game I can see Declan's point

Really. Not even if it mean't representing your country and on top of that giving yourself a chance to earn a spot in a team and go on to play at the Olympic games?

So you'd prefer to avoid the travel and stay in europe and not play but sit on the bench for a danish 2nd division team ?.

And clearly there are players who share this view, sacrificing University, their jobs and others, playing for their country in Oceania playoffs,Pacific Games these friendlies etc. Ultimately the repeated middle finger others give the selectors and their country will be ignored when they accept the chance to play at the olympics. For some of us this does not feel right, but ultimately the coach will pick what he thinks are the best players, and be thankful to those discarded who got them there.

Without seeing the game, I have no idea. If that was a fair & balanced cut of the chances, we must have really dominated them as maynardf said.

Regardless, there was a lot to like for us. For a 'B' team, there is a lot of talent on show there.

Rogerson looked good as well. We clearly dominated the middle based on how much space we had on the flanks.

The game seemed to improve for us when he moved away from 4-4-2 , and the players he started with were to fit into that formation perhaps? Maybe he will start with the formation he reverted to and see which players will take up those roles? One thing is for sure, Des knows how to put a team out that gets the results he wants, so his choices always interesting and you would think he wants to see as much of the overseas players now that he can.

It would make real sense to only play those guys who are available for Olympic qualifiers in Fiji.

Thats the tourney that matters not these Olyroos matches.

They have already made a point that they are more than competitive.

The squad for the Olympic qualifers has been names yes. But No Just and Dalton are not in it.

If they make the Olympics. Buckingham has created some great competition for places. Also with three overage players to be included. Could be an exciting team.

I would have thought neither Just nor Dalton are guaranteed a place. I'd like to see more of Just playing for NZ teams though. He was great for the U20's.

My pick if we qualify...

                    Woud

Igham   Smith Stringer . Carcace

               Bell    Thomas

McCowatt            Singh            Just

                   Wood

You could replace Smith with Boxall, but I think Smith brings the greater leadership qualities. I expect Reid to be injured otherwise I would grab him.

Possible straight swaps

Just for McGarry

McCowatt for Waine or Rogerson.

A quick, mobile and technically proficient team with a good target up top.

you're right I misread that. I was only talking about Just (who should be in it) don't know where you got Dalton from

Just is in a position where he needs to weigh up traveling around the world for a pretty meaningless game or sticking it out with his club side (and at the end of the day the ones that pay his wages). Had this been the full team (but when will they ever play games again) I could understand but Olympic qualifiers not that worried - as you point out Des has created some great competition for the team

How much of the improvement in our youth teams do you think is down to Des, as opposed to just a better depth of players (which I guess implies better local league structure)?

From a very far away point of view, I've never seen a NZ team play the way the lads did at the U20 world cup, and to me that looked down to better coaching plain and simple. It makes you wonder what Des could have done with more time at the Nix, or (sigh) the senior mens team.

Eli Just and Dalton Wilkins are the two Ole boys that were named for the U23 games against Aus. That ended up not travelling from Europe.

What I'm trying to say is. Are they jeopardising there chances of going and playing at the Olympics by choosing to not travel and stay in Europe? And just to sit on the bench for a Danish 3rd tier team. I'm sure they have had discussions with Des. And that I don't know the whole picture.

But if they are not even getting on the park in Denmark...........And the games are during a fifa window.

I'm not aware of the facts, but a glance at our subs bench for last week's game suggests that the non arrival of these players left us somewhat high and dry.
