Not surprised we won. Good signs.

I really hope we got through injury free.

I love it how after we win, their social media starts referring to it as "todays training match". There is no such thing between NZ and Australia!

Sounds like a great way to start building the team - it's not like they've been playing together for years or anything. Seems we play them again in a couple of days.

Promising result. That's what 2 draws & a win from last 3 U23/U24 Trans Tasman games. Does sound like the Olyroos made more subs, ie gave most of their squad a run, so maybe didn't take it quite as seriously as NZ. Lineups Thursday will be interesting, and great to hear there will be a 2nd warmup game. Olywhites need all the match prep they can get.

Short match summary below from Socceroos website. Just's strike for goal, sounded impressive.

Considering the amount of time they have had together compared to us that's a great result.

Agree Ranix, shutting them out with a new line up is excellent.

Typical NZF giving the team a poor preparation against piss weak opposition.

What's our expectations here? It's a fail if we don't make the quarter, right?
Given that we made it out of the group stage at the U20 WC, I think you have it right.

What were the time scenarios/deadlines for us not replacing Boxall with Payne? Was it because we didn't know Boxall had the injury when the timeline passed?

Yeah it was too late by the time we knew.

While I am really excited at the prospect of this team, and got just about the best draw from the various pools, we shouldn't underestimate quality of the opposition. Romania in particular beat a star-studded England team 4-2 in the Euro U-21s from 2 years ago. All goals in the final 14 minutes! England included the likes of Mount, Henderson (GK), Mount, Calvert-Lewis, Foden, Abraham, Sessegnon etc.
Also drew with France to win their group. So could be half-decent.

Would be worried about Romania had they not named what sounds like a C-string side for this tournament. South Korea missing some key players too, particularly Son. I think we’ve got a good chance to go through as a higher ranked 3rd placed team or even in the top 2.

Right - hadn't followed the news that many of their young stars have been not been released by clubs.
Note though, that we need to finish in top two to qualify - only 16 teams - then straight through to QFs

Surprised by how fit (and young) Danny looks in those photos, maybe he's the plan B at centre back!

Looks like Woodsie could teach the English a few things about taking penalties from those photos too.

Worth contacting TVNZ to see what coverage of NZ in the Olympic Football they are providing.
They are advertising that they are showing "every NZ moment" but only
"from July 23"
Our women's first match is July 21 11.30 pm; men is July 22 8 pm
You'll of course get everything live on Sky but the more people who contact TVNZ, the more interest it shows there is from the public.

Well Hay is the last person in the world who could roll out the old, "work has been insanely busy the last few years. It's been crazy. I haven't had any time for the gym, sleep, a skincare regime or keeping to my Paleo diet"

This is the reply I got from TVNZ

Unfortunately the first event we have in our partnership with Sky is the Opening Ceremony on the evening of the 23rd.

We'll bring some replayed coverage of the games featuring New Zealander on the first weekend of coverage, but Sky as the official broadcaster will have these live.

Wow, NZ Football are really onto it!  Congratulations to the PR dept.  (ie don't go there for any news...)

I see a back three is being played:  Pijnaker, Reid and Stensness.
Defence obviously held tight, though the South Koreans will be a different ball game.

Stensness was playing as a CB in that first game? Where did you see that?
Sofascore show a 4-3-3, though they could easily be wrong.
https://www.sofascore.com/team/football/australia-u23/49021

And yeah NZ Football's website is pretty much useless for any content. Their Facebook page is better though, on a low bar scale.

If I was Hay, I'd be inclined to go with the same starting 11 (with maybe Stamenic replacing Stensness), first half as they just need time together. Then at HT make sweeping changes to give the bench players some game time. Half a match should be enough for Reid and Wood especially, leading into Sth Korea next Thursday.

Are these matches meant for broadcasting? Or are both teams trying to keep it low profile and prepare a certain way for these Olympics?

Just a thought, but that's probably why there is a lack of coverage on these friendlies. We had the same process when NZ played Mexico U20s before the 2017 U20 World Cup.

Just a thought here though.

Definitely they are meant to be behind closed doors warm ups only. So we shouldn't expect them to be televised, no. Though weirdly 1,500 locals were at the first game. Presumably someone on the front gate had instructions to weed out Korean, Romanian & Honduran spies!

But socceroos.com.au has daily articles on the Olyroos in Japan, and more.
https://www.socceroos.com.au/

Of course FFA has more resources/money than NZF, but NZ Football's website is still poor. https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/

Even outside of events like the Olympics, their posting of content can be very random. An article on Kiwis Overseas with their club results etc, and then another one 3 months later. It's almost like someone wakes up one day and says shark, lets write up a quick blurb, it's been awhile.

The All Whites FB page is better https://www.facebook.com/AllWhites/

The Football Ferns have a reasonable one as well.

Honduras’ warm up game vs Japan was televised, and probably in front of a crowd as well, and the Matildas (Australia’s women’s team) have their game tonight televised, so it shouldn’t be impossible for them to do it. If they properly wanted to do behind closed doors to eliminate any potential scouting they wouldn’t have announced the games, and certainly not done updates/allow spectators.

Before the 2019 U20 World Cup they played two such games, and only mentioned the final result after the game, and the goal-scorers. They even went to the extent of having the players use different shirts to their official squad numbers so that the opposition wouldn’t get an idea of who is who (eg Waine wore 11 instead of his 18, Cacace 17 instead of 13 etc). In Monday’s game you can see they had already printed the names on the shirts, so they can’t have been worried about opposition scouting, it’s probably just that they’ve decided it’s too much effort to stream the games.
