The rules I think are you have to be able to finish in the top 16 at Olympics. As there are only 16 teams then thats a given

if it's a 20 man squad, they'll probably just have the 2 keepers and that for me would be gleeson and  o'keefe

ryan has to go as does reid, the third over-age spot is wide open; maybe smeltzy?  i wouldn't consider keat to be one of the three best senior all whites.

rojas, wood, barbarouses and smith will help the team a lot

hard to say how useful payne and the rest of the young europe-based guys would be.  safe to say they'd be better equipped than a lot of the qualifying squad.

FIFA will go ape on the IOC if the NZOC omit the olywhites

Done.

Dear TVNZ,
Why are you not screening the Olywhites olymic qualifying tournament in Taupo?
This is being picked up by countries all around the pacific and even Asia but not here in the HOST country.
Give football a fair go.

Hi there

We were very interested to read your comments about coverage of this event. Thanks for giving us this feedback. I have passed on your comments to the sport producers.

I think Reid and Nelson to solidify the defence and Smeltz to add some goal scoring ability.
Having Winston and Ryan might save the NZOC a bit on airfares too if that's what they're worried about, not that that's a reason to pick someone.

tbh. I think Reid, Nelsen and Smith.(how do you think we drew all our games at the WC) if they are all available. to me they are our best players. Give the young players a chance up front. with wood, Kosta you already got enough experience there.

ok, midfield might be a bit light. but with rojas it should help. plus the rest of the midfield should be able to step up their game knowing they got those three behind them.

if one of the back 3 overage are not available then i would take Mikey Mac.

I would like to see the following, based on what i have seen of the players available. Also note, due to a lack of a quality RB, i'm going to play a player out of position.

                      Gleeson
Reid      Nelsen             Smith       Hogg

Rojas           Chettleburgh           Fenton
                         Keat

                   Wood  Barbs

Keat and McG are interchangeable.

Out of the players who just played I don't see the following making the cut.

Both CM, McGeorge (probaly will as captain, but shouldn't) and Feneriadis were poor and didn't control the game.
Hicks gave away the ball too much
Big Wellington striker... played quite well compared to others, but have Wood so not needed.
Prattely, too far down the pecking order.
Eager, will be behind Reid / Smith / Nelsen and Musa (Musa came in for praise from Emblem) so is fifth choice.
I also wouldn't take... can't remember names today the other Wellington striker who got sent off, and would look to take Smeltz in his place, offers more.

Out of those who played only Fenton gets a start with Hogg in my eyes.
Fenton possible to the bench and Kosta to the left with Draper going up top with Wood.

Another player i would exclude is number 18 Adam Thomas. He looked out of his depth againt Saudi Arabia. but i gave him the benefit of the doubt for those games. Saudi are a pretty sharp team. in those games he seemed to just pass the ball away either to opposition or got rid of the ball before a saudi player got within 20metres of him...whcih passed the pressure on to his team mate.

watched the fiji final and saw him playing the same way. gave the ball away 2 or 3 times down the right mid in situations that are just unacceptable. didnt seem to do much else either.

anyway. the good news is...hopefully there will only be about 4 players in the starting lineup from the qualifiers. got the result, but below par.

Also is Chettleburgh really likely to be included?

Wonder if with Brown retiring they look at giving Keat as much International exposure as possible. This we a view to him being the obvious replacement for Brown in the AW's. The more games he gets at this level the better it will be with the WC qualifiers coming up.

Wait, are you suggesting that we should be looking at the Olympic and World Cup campaigns holistically and trying to get continuity between them?

I know, maybe Ricki Herbert should be part of the Olympic campaign in some capacity? Maybe as technical support to Emblen or something?

Seems like a good idea. The only problem that I can see is that some muppet somewhere will think that's giving Herbert too much power.

Hmmmmm.

Don't forget that the senior players mentioned above for possible inclusion as the three over-age players will all have been in action for the All Whites in the Oceania Nations Cup- approx. from June 3- 11  where they will have played five games in nine days.
Probably they will have have been in camp and played a few friendlies in the week or two before the Nations Cup too.
Premier League Season for Ryan finishes May 13
Championship finishes April 28 (Reid then possibly involved in promotion play-offs for a few weeks).
So, that's going to be a real busy "off-season" for our All White over-age players Nelsen, Reid and whoever.

Will they, their club managers or Riki want them to have such an intense schedule?
For example Great Britain are excluding players from England's Euro 2012 squad playing June 8th- July 1st from their Olympic squad and British club managers including Alex Ferguson are complaining about releasing players.

formation-wise i'd like you see all our sides play 4-4-1-1 with two strikers named up top and one dropping deeper, so my team is like touchme's but with a couple of tweaks:

gleeson
reid, nelsen, smith, hogg
rockarse, chettleburgh, mcgeorge*, barbarouses
smeltz
wood

* not sure about mcgeorge, but he seems the best of the current bunch.  could also move eagar into midfield

player-captain-coach would be big ryan

Ok..For those who keep going on about Rowe...Hard News etc. Who would Rowe replace? im not saying hes a bad player, hes solid but simply no room for him?!.

I think Ried Nelson and Smeltz will go as over age.

Chettleburgh to be selected? not sure on that.

Thoughts anyway

From what I can see Hogg is the number 1 left fullback and Prattley can play left centre back whereas I am not sure Rowe can play a centre back role. No point carrying two specialist left fullbacks in a small squad. He misses out due to necessity. I want to know where Murphy and Bevin were -- thought they were both good at U20 world cup and good prospects for NZ.

Not now: Harry's realizing more and more just how good Ryan is:

HARRY REDKNAPP KEEN TO KEEP RYAN NELSEN AFTER SHINING IN SPURS' WIN

"I thought he was fantastic tonight," Redknapp said. "I just think he is a great professional and a real good player.

"I couldn't believe I got him on a free. I felt it was an amazing player to bring to the club, he is a player I have chased for years.

"I have always thought he was top class, a great pro, a great trainer, a fantastic person.

"He has got a six-month contract. At the end of the season you have got to keep him here next year because he's worth his weight in gold just to have around for other people to look at the way he works, the way he trains, the way he behaves, his attitude.

If Cameron Howieson connues to develop and gets afew senior games in which is being predicted before the end of teh season you have to argue he should be picked for the Olympics... and being a midfielder (albeit a wide midfielder) a traditional weak point... even more reason to put him in there.

Agree they should throw a few of the talented overseas-based players into the mix, even if a bit young for u-23 level. Coaching staff may feel players like Howieson are too young at 17 to play against 23 year-olds though.

Others they should look at bringing in (with year born)
Goalies:
Stefan Marinovic (SV Wehen Wiesbaden (1993)- impressed for the u-20's last year
Max Crocombe(Oxford United FC) U20 (1993)- youth team player at pro club.
Defenders:
Liam Graham(Vicenza Calcio)(1992)- u-20 World Cup 2011- playing for reserve team of top Italian second-tier club
Luis Esteves(Portland Timbers)(1992)- u-17 World Cup, NZ u-20 squad- youth team at MLS club, doing very well.
Ben Mckendry(Vancouver Whitecaps) U20 (1993)
Francis De Vries(Fc Basel) U20(1994)- youth team at biggest club in Switzerland
Midfielders:
Michael Built(Northampton) (1992)- been doing well there, promoted to first team squad
Jamie Doris(Hibernian) U20(1993)- second season at Hibs youth team.
Tim Payne (Blackburn) U20 (1994)- not playing much but early days at FA Youth Cup finalist.

Liam Graham latest: at youth team of a top Italian club Vicenza:

Liam Graham scored for Vicenza U21s as they beat Stabaek U21s 1-0 in the Viareggio Cup last week.

Vicenza were knocked out on penalties by Juventus in the round of 16.

Question re- Olympics

Very controversial issue: there will be a Great Britain team but the Football Associations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have said they won't contribute players.
However, they have no legal right to prevent their players taking part if they so desire and the British Olympic Committee insist all British players should be eligible, so in fact they will call up any British players who want to take part:

GREAT BRITAIN FOOTBALL TEAM LONDON 2012

A compromise was eventually reached between the four associations, whereby a squad of English players only would represent the United Kingdom. The football associations of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales sent a joint letter to FIFA stating that they would not participate, but that they would not object to England participating alone.

This agreement was challenged by the British Olympic Association, who want to select players from all four countries and claimed it would be potentially discriminatory to only select English players. Jim Boyce has commented that there is no legal restriction on players being selected by the BOA and the Scottish FA has admitted that it would have no legal grounds to prevent Scottish players from participating.

It has been confirmed that the FA intends on selecting players from across the UK. Eligible non-English players such as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey have expressed their desire to play in the squad, having gone as far as to pose for a photo-shoot wearing the replica shirts of the team.

The FA announced in October 2011 that Stuart Pearce would be the head coach. The team is expected to play two friendlies in 2012, prior to the Olympic tournament. After this announcement, Pearce drew up an initial long-list of players who he wanted to consider for the squad, and wrote to all of these players to inform them of his choice. At the time, Pearce has said that players who did not want to be included would be able to inform him of their wishes at that stage. It was confirmed in December 2011 that none of the players who are called into the England national football team squad for the 2012 UEFA European Championships will be selected, in order to avoid player fatigue. Celtic and Crystal Palace amongst other clubs,[55] stated that some of their players had been invited for possible selection, confirming that Scottish players had been amongst those invited. In January 2012, it was revealed that 191 players had been contacted, with 7 declining to be considered for the team.
