Fluffed some great chances by taking too many touches on the ball (a la Pavlovic) but had a nice finish for Vanuatu's first goal.

Wow that was close 3-2......we were crap in the second half.

Vanuata played some nice football. Kept it on the deck and most of their players have good skills. NZ got three goals from set pieces. Musa a cracker header from a corner. Draper scrambled one in and Fenton got the other.

This is the first game I've seen from this tournement. If this is the  future of NZ football then I'm not hugely impressed. Are we genetically programmed to play like this??Individually there are some good players but tactically and skill????

Looked like the Nix on a bad day. Lots of hoof long balls. Continually turned over possession(especially second half) Most of the play went down the flanks etc etc. Second half was all Vanuatu. When we needed our midfield to slow it down and keep possession they could barely put 3 passes together.

On the good side they were generally organised in defense(apart from poor marking for the second goal). Fenton looks a good player...hit the crossbar with a super diving header. Needed more Marco!

Emblem said in the post match that our conditioning was a worry.....lots of them stopped running and he said he could have pulled at least 5 off by the end. Hopefully they will have recovered by Sundays final

Jebus, haven't they had more time off between games than those in Group A, having played one less game?  We're f**ked if that's the case.

I find it shameful that we even conceded goals.  'Whitey' should be crushing these sinking Pacific islands without mercy.

I wonder if maybe the pacific nations have improved whilst we have stayed the same?

Anyway needs more Luke Rowe in the defense, we need to improve and fast.

hearing good things. The next Rojas out of the nzfc or a bit early to say?

I think this is his first season at nzfc which is encouraging - like Rojas/Kosta to show that much promise that early.

Fiji will be tough in the final. They are good atheletes, very quick and strong. If our boys stop running after an hour we could be in trouble. We have had a realitively easy time at this tournament.....backing up for a big, big game on Sunday will be a good test of their physical and mental stamina.
It would be so, so embarassing to many people if we don't win this.

I saw the Vanuatu vs Fiji and thought Vanuatu were clearly the better side, unlucky to be beaten by Fiji. Fiji were strong and fast, but based on yesterday's game seemed were not as tactically astute, or even close to being as individually technically proficient as NZ. They were also helped by woeful keeping from Vanuatu in their pool match. Fiji have ability from set piece, but given this is a significant NZ strength, I don't imagine us having any issues.

I think its great to see the Pacific nations developing, in the long run it can only help NZ football to have a more competitive environment at a regional level. However, we should still be beating these teams and beating them well and the fact that against PNG and Vanuatu we scored 4 and conceded 2 is not really acceptable. I'm not convinced with the tactical astuteness of the coaches at age-group level in NZ and I think that weird backroom politics play too much part in team selections. That's the only way I can think Chettleburgh would have missed out on the u20s and Rowe on this squad.

I'm going with both simultaneously. There's a $3 fee to watch today's games which is fine given the quality. Just wondering why they not being televised in NZ?

Vanuatu take third 1-0 Crazy finish with a dead set pen to Vanuatu disallowed, shot blocked of the line and then rebound shot cannons off the crossbar.

Done.

Dear TVNZ,
Why are you not screening the Olywhites olymic qualifying tournament in Taupo?
This is being picked up by countries all around the pacific and even Asia but not here in the HOST country.
Give football a fair go.

ROLL ON LONDON IN JULY!!!

Really looking forward to this now- imagine if we get drawn to play the Great Britain side (England u-23 team mostly probably plus Gareth Bale and 3 over-age Premier league stars).

Bonus this Olympics: Sky have the TV rights, so will dedicate several channels and we'll get complete Olywhites games- not the bastardised versions we had to put up with in 2008 from TVNZ when they cut away from NZ matches to update the rhythmic gymnastics or whatever...

The team we fielded in qualifying looked a bit lightweight at times in terms of quality, but they'll no doubt now bring in some of the following eligible players from overseas clubs.
Reckon there's a lot of talent here:
Goalies:
Stefan Marinovic (SV Wehen Wiesbaden (1993)
Max Crocombe(Oxford United FC) U20 (1993)

Defenders:
Tommy Smith (Ipswich Town) (1990)
Dominique Jourdan(FCA Darmstadt) (1992)
Liam Graham(Vicenza Calcio)(1992)
Nexto Vujevich(Gold Coast united)(1992)
Luis Esteves(Portland Timbers)(1992)
Storm Roux(Perth Glory) U20(1993)
Ben Mckendry(Vancouver Whitecaps) U20 (1993)
Francis De Vries(Fc Basel) U20(1994)

Midfielders:
Marco Rojas(Melbourne Victory) (1991)
Michael Built(Northampton) (1992)
Dylan Windust(SC Waldgirmes) (1992)
Jamie Doris(Hibernian) U20(1993)
Cameron Howieson (Burnley) U20(1994)
Tim Payne (Blackburn) U20 (1994)

Strikers:
Kosta Barbarouses(Alania Vladikavkaz) 1990
Chris Wood(Bristol city) (1991)
Caleb Rufer(Sydney FC)(1991)

Not all will even want to commit to NZ over say Australia etc. but a good number (on top of the four All Whites) have been NZ age group players already or identify primarily as Kiwis (e.g. Canterbury 18 year-old Francis De Vries who only left for top Swiss side Basel this summer).

With so many overseas players available, people's thoughts on who should be retained, who should be dropped and which overseas players are worth bringing in?

Nelsen wants to play in the Olympics so he will surely take a spot then you would have Reid as another overage player and Mcglinchy as the last overage player.

No, no, no.

Michael Eager has to be part of the squad, as he is going to get me tickets to the NZ games (and the 100m Final) as well as giving me a tour of the Olympic village.

I would take Marinovic as well. Nelsen will undoubtedly be one of the overage players so that leaves 2 more. Taking extra central midfielders makes sense because that is where we are weakest, but are Keat and McGlinchey too similar to take both? If Ricki has an input it will be Brown and Bertos...
