Ben Old too injured to play a part in the tourney?

Edit: And herdman isn't playing first team football, surely he should be involved if fit, what's the story there?

Herdman had a serious knee injury a couple of months ago.
A long layoff ahead.

Also don't know why Sutts played for the Nix the other week, seeing as his knee was heavily strapped. Seems odd to have risked him like that so early in the season.

yup he was an injured scratch - along with Ronan Wynne, Jay Herdman and (unfortunately for us) Sam Sutton, who'll likely miss the Melb City clash
Sam Sutton injured again. Must be super frustrating for him. Proving to be very injury prone last year or so.

Good squad, and good luck to all. Bayliss looks an interesting pickup in all that - Excellent numbers in the NSW NPL, and now signed to the Jets in the A-League.

AussieScout over on twitter will be absolutely fuming!

Probability of being related to James Bayliss, 23, also formerly of CCM, also holder of NZ + Aus passports and reported seen training at a facility in Upper Hutt recently, is quite high I would imagine.

I'd say the odds on that would be exceptionally high.

Good shout, thanks. 👍

At home - we should be too strong and qualify for the Olympics - would be royally gutted if we don't.

Great opportunity to see some new and exciting All White talent in Dias and Tyler (the lad at Reading) get a run. Plus I have high hopes for Conchie, Surman and Heald etc.

two Poms coaching a kiwi side!

What happened to all these qualifications for Kiwi coaches and the thousands of $$ they pay for them? Either they've been sucked in bigtime at the lure of roles or NZF still think locals are rubbish.

Two be fair to Greenacre he has done his time in NZ within the Nix organisation. Not only did he play here for a decent number of years he hung around and has stayed loyal to the Nix. He deserves the chance at a national level.

So Surman, Paulsen, OVH & Kelly-Heald to miss the Nix's Australia Cup tie against Melb City. If so will leave the Nix very light.

NZ have PNG & Fiji in their pool. Two to go through to the semis, no quarterfinals. American Samoa pulled out.

No Conchie picked, which is the right decision, though by rights he could have been picked?? His ban only covering club football??

Dibley-Dias he has to stay in England, given he's now cracking match day EPL squads for Fulham. But great news if indeed he has chosen for NZ for his international football, in the short term at least!
Be interesting to see if he's picked for the AWs in October.

Luckily, they won't necessarily miss it! This seems to be one of the few tournaments where chopping and changing the squad around is permitted. I'd expect the Nix and Bazeley to have had a chat about bringing Paulsen and Surman (at least) back for the game, if flights to and from Aussie aren't too hard to handle

AV appears to have the draw wrong way round. PNG on the 27th and Fiji on the 30th according to OFC

'Nix have just tweeted the 7 players picked for the u23s in what would seem they have agreed for them to join up with the squad. Not sure if this means some after the petro$FC FFA cup clash or they will be missing that at as well.

Phoenix players to remain with the Phoenix for the FFA Cup clash, then join the U23s for their second game:
Isaac Hughes, Lukas Kelly-Heald, Alex Paulsen, Finn Surman and Oskar van Hattum.

Joining the U23 squad to replace the Nix players: Aiden Carey (Auckland City), Adama Coulibaly (Western Springs), Theo Ettema (Wellington Olympic), Joe Knowles (Eastern Suburbs) and Matthew Sheridan (Wellington Phoenix)

Sounds like is the Nix's decision not to release the 5 players for the first PNG game, this Sunday. Gives the 5 replacements an opportunity I guess, and NZ should still be too strong you'd really expect. Though they can't afford a slip up, with only 2 pool games before the semis.

Newcastle Jets’ Lachlan Bayliss has also had to withdraw from the squad after suffering an injury.

Head coach Darren Bazeley said:

“One of the unique things about this tournament is that we are able to change the squad from game to game meaning that there is a lot of flexibility with how we can assemble the team.

“While it is disappointing not to be able to call on five strong players who have been held back by Wellington Phoenix, I have every confidence in the squad we have assembled.”

I suspect OFC will stream them. Best keep an eye on their website.

They are even streaming the OFC Beach Soccer Nations Cup 2023!
Though I guess for OFC it's a refreshing event, in that a NZ team definitely won't win!

Lot of Eastern Suburbs boys in there, five in all. What's that line about NZF's favourite club? (Tongue obviously in cheek).

But, back from left to right: Joe Knowles (Suburbs), Riley Bidois, Luis Toomey (Suburbs), Aaryan Raj (Suburbs), Ryan Verney (Suburbs)

Front: Adama Coulibaly (Western Springs), Campbell Strong (Suburbs)

Also, tickets are free to the games(Auckland based). However, that was hardly mentioned anywhere. I was trying to figure out where to buy tickets. only found on the OFC website Frequently asked questions.

If we build it, they will come...

Piss poor.
Absorb the OFC into the AFC already and be done with it.

So in hindsight Nix taking 5 of their NZ U23 players to Melbourne - definitely the right call. But OFC what a farce.

On a positive note we have made the semi finals!.

Not necessarily. PNG miss todays game, have a bye Wednesday but may be here for next weekend v Fiji.
If we lose to Fiji and Fiji lose to PNG…
The maybe backing themselves to save several thousand dollars, take a 0-3 v NZ an a draw v Fiji may be enough

Of course, because AFC officials will be looking at this and saying "Wow, how great would it be to add these Football Associations into our mix?!"  Stuff like this makes that pipe dream less likely, not more...

Popular opinion - if you forfeit one game you should forfeit the fudgeing lot. No nonsense second chances like they got at the U19s.

Solomons 3 Vanuatu 0

https://www.oceaniafootball.com/solomon-islands-edge-out-vanuatu-on-opening-day-in-group-b/

Probably a few of that very good U17 team the Solomons had a few years back in their U23s now. Likely biggest threat to NZ.

No games tomorrow. NZ play Fiji Wednesday. If PNG don't turn up, you'd think it will be us, Fiji, Solomons & Vanuatu as semi finalists. But Samoa will be a chance against Vanuatu in their pool.

How many of their team are homegrown?  Or in reality just leveraging off Samoan heritage players in NZ & Aus.

I think their women's team at recent OFC champs even had 1 or 2 players from the States.

Had a huge, huge movement a few years ago to collate and contact any players with the slightest possbility of heritage, and it's paid dividends. Most of the squad is based in Australia and NZ

Imagine how good they could be with Stamenic, Tuiloma, Howieson, the Boxalls, etc.
