The USA score. It was a nice goal, but I'm super unconvinced about Nayler... looks unstoppable at first glance the ball actually goes closer to the middle of the net than it seemed on first camera angle and she doesn't even move.
the problem I have with Nayler is that she never looks confident, even with their first "attempt" which literally dribbled towards the goal she looked panicked. You need composure as a keeper, and of course the basica ability to stop a shot. Which I've alsways doubted with her.
yeah, and this extra noise gives the back 4 confidence, they know where their keeper is, know what she wants from them.
we have just lacked a little bit of creativity, it could be that the women are a little over awed playing against the US, perhaps the US defence is more efficient, but Satchell and Chance clearly are the best creative players we have, we need to get them on the ball. The other issue on attack is that we just lack any shooting power, we seem to need to be within the box to even test a semi-decent keepenr, unlike the power that the US have and I imgaine some of the European sides. Strength is definately something we can increase.
Thought USA would do more in the first half, but the showed some class in the 2nd. Impressed with Lavelle and Swanson..
NZ battled, perhaps better than expected. The 4 Wellington players who finished the game were as good as anything NZ had. Neville was off the pace I thought , Barry looked much better. Rennie looked like Pritchard in disguise.
I prefer watching that and the organisation that the Ferns have achieved in a week training camp compared to all preseason and 8 matches so far this season from the Nix ladies. If we stay with 442 would be good to see India Paige Riley get more of a chance, and Barry at Centre back. For the first time in memory most players had around a 8/10 game for them. No real shockers so that was great. If we can get 6-10 shots in the next game that would be awesome.
That's the most positive post match interview I've ever seen after losing 4-0. Not sure if I admire the positivity or if it annoys me.
From who?
Riley. I don't follow much women's football so don't know much about her, but I get the vibe that's her normal personality (super happy/positive); as a grumpy old man it's not a world I relate to!...
Yipe a real Californian. They tend to see the world sunny side up.
But that ain't a bad thing, when you have been continously beaten by top 20 teams since forever. At least your captain believes in you, as you go into a once in a lifetime home WC.
I dont mnd Riley's positivity to be fair, she's honest, we were never expected to push the US, but also positive that while we didnt have some if our senior startiers the squad will learn and continue to grow.
You could agrue of late the Ferns have had more funding than they deserve, via HPSNZ or whoever. They certainly play a lot more than the AWs, and since the Heraf saga seems like they have been well supported by NZF (Covid restrictions permitting).
Bullshark article by NZ Football who accept the governmental money and subsequent obligation to call the country Aotearoa let alone the silly made up names for world Cup venues. Pathetic, they are.
Athleticism was always going to be the eventual winner.
We defended well in two banks of 4 in the first half and showed some discipline in shape which you need at the highest level but you could tell it was out of fear for the opposition and we neglected how we would approach keeping the ball when we got it back. It was never going to last and we got over run. To be honest it could've been 7 or 8 if it wasn't for some un-characteristic sloppiness in front of goal from the world champions. And we could've been out there for another 6 hours and not come close to scoring.
I think we will be better with the 6 players missing when they return but in saying that we had them last time and we conceded 5! I think i heard the commentators say the USA players were out f season? maybe we got them at a good time today.
We are so poor in attack - i really don't know how you fix it. Collins, Rennie, and Jale no where near international standard. Satchell as much as shes technically inept at least she causes some problems for opposition with her pace and directness....shes the best we have.
Ali Riley shouldn't be captain in my opinion. She needs to concentrate on just playing football and stop talking about being an activist for things and also needs to show more knowledge and professionalism in regards to football on and off the pitch. I don't think its beneficial for the group despite her thinking it is. She has the coach wrapped around her finger, at the end of the day she got her the job. I would like to see Katie Bowen step up and take the reigns when shes available. She strikes me as a tough kiwi leader that brings a lot of professionalism to the table and has football focus all the time.
I think we will go ok at the world cup with our best team on pitch. No excuse not to get out of group.
Good post Was there any point playing Riley at centre back? Ward should maybe go back to being a striker as she doesn’t cut it as a left back (that header!)

Satchell and Chance have been our livewire players in attack for a little while. Chance definitely the best. Collins and Rennie definitely disappointing. Indiah Paige-Riley I would like to see get more gametime for NZ given our limited options.

would be a huge achievement to beat Argentina and Portugal in the next window (both countries with far more passion for football than NZ)
Obviously 2 of those players are major injury concerns and Whinham isn’t playing at the moment, but if our WWC squad was from that group I’d be happy with that. Decent experience, athleticism, skill and desire to get the points needed to get out of our group, by scoring goals. Luckily we won’t be playing the States in our group, but against teams ranked 10-40 we should be pretty competitive.

Watching the replays, Naylor really wasnt good enough . A lot of reports talking up Neville, but in second half at least I think she was all at sea. Ones for the future are Paige Riley and Barry. Jale showed some potential. If Hassett doesnt play on Saturday, there is a danger that USA will simply walk through the midfield, she ran her butt off yesterday
What is the point playing Naylor? shes 3rd/4th choice if she's lucky in a proper squad and she's had her time. If the other keepers in the series can't get a run above ahead of her then they must be real bad. Little to no point in playing Naylor. Don't know much about Murphy Sheaff but surely she couldnt do any worse?? Edwards I'm sorry but won't see a minute.
Nayler should most definately be sitting on the bench in auckland, it's high time to give someone else a crack, she has shown time and time again that whilst she's good at club level she really isnt commanding enough for international football.
I'd love to see some minutes for Sheaff, there's no point playing Naylor and we know exactly what sort of quality (or lack off) we'll get from Edwards.
There was some positives with that first game I thought, they certainly performed miles better than I thought they would.
Hoping for an even better performance this weekend, it'd be fantastic to see us limit them to two and get some decent chances ourselves.
First of all it is Nayler. With an e. As it has been for 10 plus years she’s been Ferns keeper!
Agree she is very average and 3rd choice behind Leat and Esson
Leat is only about 20. She is the future. Alfeld also
But this is an inexperienced, depleted, makeshift Ferns side. Especially at the back. You’d only make it worse by throwing in Edwards or Sheaff. Nayler has to start by default

Yeah as a former keep I'd defo agree that it could be an absolute confidence killer putting a young gk on debut v usa. I'm not sure why they only looking to age group ranks tho... more experienced options like Georgia Candy - heaven knows why she isnt starting for the Nix - and Blair Currie in USA https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2022/12/11/kiwi-keeper-earns-highest-honours-in-first-year-in-us-college-football/
Both from U17 Uruguay ..maybe bring them all in for a trial? Or maybe trials arent the done thing these days...
I'm sorry but if you're picked in a national team you should be ok to play when called upon against anyone. If you're not mentally tough and lose confidence you won't last at any level. I'd say Sheaff would give an arm and a leg to play on Saturday.

I'm sure she'll be itching to get out there and good on her! My comment was whether this game v world champs is the right occasion for coach to debut her. And also whether they should be looking to keepers above age group ranks. I would say most keepers peak late 20s? Why rush juniors through when there are other options

A bit shark they have only opened the lower north stand of Eden Park. Appreciate it will look better for the cameras but all the good seats have now been sold.

19 year old Ken Rutherford v the Windies. That dates me, surely!
Some would say he never recovered that form and he certainly never scored a triple century in tests.

Bro chill, it's a typo.
Also, personally I disagree.
No worries fella, but 3 of you above all misspelt her name. Wasn't just you
And you wouldn't AWs debut say a 19 yr old Kees Sims against Brazil. You just wouldn't. Play Edwards (who seems no better than Nayler from what we have seen) or Sheaff (who no one has seen), and it could easily end up that 7-0 scoreline we all feared could happen. And you have a young kid with some scars.
It may still be that sort of scoreline at Eden Park. The Yanks were rusty. It won't be 0-0 at HT in the 2nd game.
Biggest ever turnout for a women's match in NZ, and some people here think it should never have happened...
I said last week, NZF were between a rock & hard place. The rock star US may never play against the Ferns in NZ for years.
NZF would have hoped at least some of Bowen, Stott, Wilkinson & Steinemtz would have been released by their ALW clubs. They must have watched the game yesterday from Aus with some envy. And well done Welly for the 12K crowd. Nice effort. But boo to those ALW clubs, and denying their players that opportunity.
Hopefully Ferns can keep 2nd game to a similar 'respectable' scoreline. Sounds like they will be stronger for Game Two - Indiah-Paige Riley & Satchell to start? Thank god, the Nix play the day after & not the other way around.
But even is a bigger blowout scoreline, tour will still be a success. Lots of young girls (and boys) getting the chance to see those US rock stars up close. You can imagine some young girls going home and trying back heels aka Lavelle! Hopefully inspired to try take their football to the next level. I think many of those young kids are smart enough to know this is a depleted Ferns team.
Sometimes NZ football fans get too worried about what the casuals (ie rugby fans) think about soccer in NZ. Fudge them. Remind that 60 yr old male Pakeha rugby head at the water cooler, that his kids or grand kids are most likely playing 'soccer' & not rugby. From yesterday's crowd videos I saw, seems like was lots of young kids having a great time at the ROF, and excited to see some of the biggest names in world womens football. Great stuff
If i was a gk and i got picked in a squad for a series - it would be gutting to think the coach has picked me with no intention of playing me. It's probably the only opportunity they will get before Esson, Leat are back.
If you concede a few just blame the lot in front of you like every good keeper does. If you make a few good saves you'll get a contract somewhere. That has happened to many NZ goalies over the years!
Oh,and if that's a dress rehearsal for a world Cup event, the trains afterwards were a total shambles! Only 12,000 oeople there, not like it was full.
My co-worker that was just trying to get to somewhere like J-Ville said the 2 trains before it got cancelled so when she finally got crammed into a half length train it was loaded with peps from the stadium and commuters from the 3 trains.
