I'm sorry, I don't understand. Are you saying that Australia was very good in 2006?

I said pretty good not very good, and they were.
Got through to the next round and were unlucky to lose on a dubious pen. to Italy.

They got very lucky against Japan, put in their place by Brazil, and had a see-saw battle and a draw against a fairly average Croatian team to get to the second round. Won 1 game out of 4 in the entire tournament, thanks to late, late goals against Japan. That's not pretty good - that's OK, but nothing more.

A bit better than the AW's

Obviously, but that hardly makes them 'pretty good' in international football.

If they are ranked in the top 20 they must be pretty good , as there are many teams ranked lower.
What do think is pretty good?

FIFA ranking is meaningless. There's at least 10 teams ranked below Australia that could absolutely rape them.

Just like there's teams in front of them that Oz could beat quite comfortably.

Like I said, they are an OK side, but nothing more than that. el grapadura2010-04-03 10:17:05

I agree, but the same could be said for the teams 20 to 30 behind the AW"s

I think come World Cup time,we'll see there are atleast three teams ranked higher than the All Whites that they could "absolutely rape"!

No argument from me there.

Michael Glading seems to disagree with you.

NZF chief executive Glading told Sunday News his exact expectation for the national team is "the tough but achievable challenge" of a top 30 Fifa ranking by 2020, and has personally researched and drafted a plan to make it happen.

People say rankings dont mean anything... but we all know they do. f**k being ranked 79 for the next 10 years, its going to do nothing for the game. It'l be used as an excuse to not fund the AWs, and excuse for other teams to not want to play us, an excuse for the nation to not care about football.

We are now ranked 78th! Meanwhile of our WC opponents, Slovaka drop 5 to 38, Paraguary drop 7 to 33 and Italy remain 5th. Also, North Korea (grouped with Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast and who the TAB give a better chance of winning the tournament than us) slip further to 106th. South Africa also down to 90th, so we are comfortably only 3rd lowest ranked at WC! And Australia slips to 20th.

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere but this sh*t is seriously going to affect our Fifa ranking.

What is the highest NZ has ever been btw?

At this rate they'll start seeding us in Pot A for the WC draw in 2014- or maybe i 've been on the pot too much

But seriously, i imagine there'll be new ranking after the WC, and we'll be moving

Could be interesting how high we climb.
In the last five games we have got the following pionts
Australia 0
Serbia 555
Slovenia 0
Slovakia 664
Italy 780
Thats an average of 400 pts (which is also our current ranking pionts)

A win/draw with Paraguay should get NZ up inside the top 50.

You should get points just for being close. Just because.

To move into the top 50 we would have to increase our points by about 200 from 410 to 610.
So given your calculations above and this morning's result, how does this relate to our total points.
Should also be considered that top 50 teams within striking distance of NZ who appeared in the 2006 WC and not 2010 will lose the big points gained there. Poland, Equador and Sweden
Points are calculated on games played over the last 4 years. (Next update 14th July)

Thats another 676 points this morning which gives us an average of 445 pts since the last rankings.
Uiron, you are correct about pts calculated over the last 4 yrs. The weighting is 100% 50% 30% 20%.  Any movement up the rankings is helped by teams above you dropping pts. In the 2 months after the 2006 world cup most the teams ranked 50 to 100 dropped a large amount of points. If that happens again it will help our rise.

The website that regularly calculates FIFA world rankings is showing our ranking as 55th after the Paraguay game. LInk below. That is close to our best ever - 47th in 2002.

I am hoping that others drop points faster than we do in the coming months, I mean they have more points to drop than we earned four years ago....
