Is blanket man involved? There'd be tons of interest if he played.

How about K Road Margaret from Auckland. Her height would be an advantage.

Not sure he'd get picked. Remember the universal words of coaches to a team not using space well: "I could throw a blanket over all of ya!"

He doesn't need to be any good, or even play. Just put him in the squad and the whole of Wellington will be interested.

Street Football Aotearoa hosted the Wellington Street Football Tournament at the Wesley Community Church with 4 teams competing in what was a trial for the Wellington players to represent NZ at the 2008 Homeless World Cup in Melbourne. The tournament was one by the Street Football Support team in a  tight final against the Wellington City Council Team.
The outcome of the tournament was that 4 local players have been selected for the New Zealand team out of a squad of 8.

Thanks Sportzone!

It was actually the Wellington Homeless Agencies who won the closely fought final against the council... thanks in the main to a superhuman performance by Desmond from the Compassion Centre. There are three players representing Wellington in the final group of 8 for Melbourne, Thanks to everyone who took part in the tournament. We hope to have further events of this kind in both Wellington and Auckland. Sportzone's support with the event and weekly training has been awesome.

Do a lot of homeless people work at the Wellington City Council?

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Yeah, they can't afford the market-value rent on state houses.

Already talking about this in regional footie thread

Homeless world Cup Definition is: someone who:

Has been homeless at some point after 1.12.2007, in accordance with the national definition of homelessness or
Makes their main living income as street paper vendor or
are asylum seekers currently without positive asylum status or who were previously asylum seekers but obtained residency status after 1st December 2007 or
Are currently in drug or alcohol rehabilitation and have been homeless at some point in the past two years (post 01.12.2006)

so that includes the majoirty of WCC staff then.

No, WCC were honured to provide training opposition as an acknowldgement of our ongoing support of this project- Good Luck Street Footy

the whole concept of a homeless football comp is odd I find. imagine trawling the streets for some bum as asking him/her - "hey you you play football??" they say ywes so you grab them off the streets and get them into the team?

i gotta ask how on earth this began???

The idea is that after the tournament there helped out so they aren't homeless anymore. I think its also to do with giving homeless people a chance to socialize in an environment were there not "shunned" and they are excepted.

"Research consistently demonstrates that over 70 per cent of players experience a significant life change. They come off drugs and alcohol, move into homes, jobs, education and training, repair relationships and even become coaches and players."

I've always wondered how the homeless can judge room temperature.

A lot of you would be closer to qualifying than you think!

Is it true they are just there for the drinks and food at the aftermatch?

That would be true of most Yellow Fever members.
