as bad as it gets at the tin weather wise, but it was a good turnout and a brilliant sceond half by the kid ferns, no.9 wall was outstanding as was the finishing of white, her first was a screamer, though poor from their keeper.

we were talking at the gamehow great is to see your team scoring goals. the crowd was going off. all i want from the nix is more goals! pull the fu*ken trigger please.

other highlight was the punch the in the head that roman candle guy got from red badge...

Harry wasn't comparing it to the competitive level, but as entertainment and enjoyable to watch football that killed the way the Phoenix have been playing this season.Paul Temple, your next Phoenix coach.
Even on that I'd still have to disagree.  Although it was a good game it was awfully frustrating to watch (even more frustrating, imo, then the Phoenix recently which says a lot).

It wasnt frustrating at all. Passes were absolutely brilliant considering the weather and so was the skill.

At least they played through the middle, rather than trying to go from defender to striker.

It was great build up play and some awesome through balls.

Not trying to be pessimistic on a historic night for Kiwi football but although they counter-attacked very well they shot from ridiculous places, put minimal power into the shots, failed to convert countless opportunities into goals and did not have much imagination.

Having said all that I'm very happy we won it and that third goal was great.

Theyre 16 yr old girls....some younger. Have played far far better than many thought they would.

There is a lot of skill there. Of course not as good as watching A-league. But it was refreshing quality, and determination, and passion

Allegedly

Thirty million that gets paid back three times in tax, i really wish some people would take the time to understand something before they comment.

But as to the future of the womans game, i think invest big time because obviously we have talent coming through more than capable of competing on the world stage.

The last 10 mins of the game against Denmark where they lost 2 -1 was just fantastic football. No power, missed chances, etc, but great drama, and made you proud of them.

Ii'm really pleased for them that they got a win tonight and finished well., they will build from here

Totally disagree, I thought it was fantastic all round.

Some of the skills shown by these 16 year old GIRLS is amazing, shielding the ball well, controlling it, using both feet confidently, heading - all of it amazingly mature in technique. The goalkeeping is a little iffy in this tournament, but they are very small some of them. That Colombian tonight was 14 !

Rosie Whites third goal was brilliant, great tenacity down the right from Wall, then a fantastic cross and an accomplished finish. If the Phoenix managed to pull of something like that, we'd all be cheering like mad.

Those girls have restored my faith in NZ football....I love the Phoenix but they sometimes make life difficult for us loyal supporters.

What I have really enjoyed is the spirit of the girls....they fought and tackled all game. They got the tactics bang on. The pushed up and compressed the Columbians high up the park...it really was smart football. The Columbians are a good side , they were the top qualifiers from Sth America...even better than Brazil .The Ferns shut them down and had them rattled.

This tournament has been a breath of fresh air....exciting end to end stuff. Its a big call but I reckon there has been more skill shown in some of these games than a lot of A-League games. There is a lot of muscle football played in the A-League.

*cough* U17 Mens World Cup in New Zealand.

NZ beat Poland 2-1 and Poland at the bottom with only two draws.

But the Girls had a better goal difference of zero. So it is the best NZ side performance at a World Cup finals tournament.

In the main everything the girls did most things better than Colombia. From the 50-50s to the mixture of shots at goal and the willingness to chance their hand. Strategy was very sound at that level and gender with tactics that were never be considered and pulled off at top international "A" matches because the amount of space and some technical mistakes. However I was very impress with the playing ability at this age, it was very high. So I would look forward in see them at the U20 world cup finals. I don't know which players are going to it so I need to check it out.

Seven deadly sins to slain before the U20 WC tournament:(the next step up)

1.) Improving team support play from three different angles.

2.) Closer defensive marking and more astute offline traps, the Colombians were too clumsy, both forwards and the midfielders, In the U20 tournament teams will have more astute attackers. So leaving it a seconds later to pull the trap. It will be more physical faster type of offside traps and tighter body to body marking.

3.) Improve on proactive positioning for the receiving of the ball so less chance of being spoiled tackled by the opposition like the Colombians were doing.

4.) Keep work on passing the ball to stick in the most optimum space of the field. Surprising, they did technically better job than the Phoenix. So you had seen good weight in the passing with the ball keeping inside the field hugging the lines very well on occasions.

But the lack of supporting options was placing pressure on the player with the ball. Lucky there was enough attacking skill versus the defensive skill that more than half of the occasion when there was no support. The player was able to moving into more space by dribbling. However it was sort of expected at this level and age that attacking skill is more developed than defensive skill relatively.

5.) Shooting power was definitely a tough one to pull off, it showed that they haven't enough practice in longer shots nor able to refine their technique well enough. Girls can shoot at the distances they were attempting. So they need to adjust the angle of the height, it was too far low so their targeting path was too straight, but they don't have the power to try and shoot like that at the long distance that they were doing.

Even professional mens have problems because of the sheer power and the very small under centre sweet spot to booster the curve upwards after the straight as well as the 30 degree angle upwards from kicking spot. Better way, especially for the females, is for a slightly higher angle and let the ball drop from a higher height over the smaller keeper which is a bit higher than the males usual shot.

6.) One on ones against the Goalkeeper. Must get that right on the approach angle, swerve run and one feint moves and double feint moves and the timing and distance between each of them. The attackers should literally almost get 100% 1v1 over the goalkeepers in drill practice. Each attacker should have at least two tricks that they are very good at. It is considered a strikers given because you make the goalkeeper committed and so create a space and easy enough gap to score. It is different with a defender breathing down the neck as it covers other angles and cuts down the extra space to maneuver. But with the girls here, there only a extra few seconds of opportunity to decide without the defender such was the slow pace of the defenders and lesser ground for the GK to close the angle off. However there were more angle and height is more favoured in the women's game when shooting for goals. The Colombian keeper was a bit too keen (a bit too good) to come out trusting her good reflexes but semi-quality chips should exploit this easily. In the U20 games, the keepers would not be that keen to come out at the distance because they know they cannot cover the chip balls like the males. Timing and position of the GK is well improved in the U20. But a chip can be delivered in a few different ways and so it can be explored. There is still plenty of goal opportunities by chipping even in the Women World Cup Final.

7.) The first touch still need work in considering body positioning. The Colombians were much better as expected even better than Demark but their actual field position was worse. The NZ girls need to improve on the first touch, also in regards to where the ball ends up relative to where they are posturing. The extra touch and awkward field position and lack of support numbers on certain parts of the field were under more pressure than it should be. Fortunately there were enough good ball to feet passes, enough good ball to runners path. But the unnecessary pressure meant a few stray passes just out of reach at crucial moments, when a slight second time delay with extra positional space would allow the connection to be made. Such pressure means the play was too far ahead and rushed in it's timing. This occurred a bit more than it should be.

Anyway with all things considered, it was more exciting and open play with full press pressure (not ideal in the mens international game unless you are Scottish) many quick turnovers and plenty of diverse shooting (best way to get over a goal drought - Phoenix take note!!) from different players and different angles as well as on target. That is the sole objective of the attacking third- is to shoot at goal. To get there and not to do so is failure of that phase of play.

Just a few ideas to work on until then for the 8 players moving into the U20 WCT.

At last, the young ladies reaped the rewards for their efforts. In the previous two games, they showed the glimpses but didn't have the luck.

If you're gonna go out of a cup, why not do it in style and the style of football they played was excellent. They have continued to do New Zealand proud as well as themselves.

Brilliant effort and I'm proud of you all for your attitude and application.

Certain mens team/s could learn from the U17 coach - shooting from anywhere, shooting full stop!

I agree. Great to see a New Zealand side playing the ball out of defence, maintaining possession and then making telling passes and creating meaningful chances in the attacking third and finishing them! And in those weather conditions too.

Fantastic night at the Football...despite the dismal weather ...the Young Ferns were a beacon of light for the future of NZ Football ! I was a very happy chappie to see them win so convincingly a very honorable way to leave the competition...brilliant effort and congratulations to Paul Temple and the team.

just want to say, I was dissapointed by the behaviour of one individual who thought it was funny to let off fire works in the stadium ....who ever you are..your a muppet and I dont want you representing us Footbal fans ...you should stay at home next time.
