A lot of work for us to do before the cup but I think the basics are there. Need to be more confident on the ball, think and take our chances.

Well done boys.

...and add Chris Wood.

True, plus Tranmuller as part of the squad (if he pans out)

Chris M was on the radio just before and it was refreshing to hear a coach point out where we didn't do well and where we have to improve.

Some games coming up by the sounds of it against South Korea, Nigeria and one of our opponents in Uruguay. Should let us know where we stand in the scheme of things

Back from the game, pretty good turn out for the game, anyone know the attendance? A couple thousand?

Played fairly poorly, even though had plenty of possession in the first half and the start of the second. Missed a heap of sitters.

Some bastard scratched my car!!! own up if you drive a turquoise pulsar with a house of travel plate. Damn Auckland drivers.

Perspective from the stands.

Crowd - decent turn out, hard to judge numbers but maybe a couple of thousand. Fairly quiet in parts but not too bad. The odd person (read: me) telling the referee where he was going wrong (not a small job). How was that foul on Lukas in the 1st half not a pen?!

We really needed to get the ball down and knock it around, especially the 1st half. Waaaay too much long ball stuff to the big striker (Galbraith?) who did not seem to be able to do too much with it. Subbed at 1/2 time, had a VERY dubious yellow from collision with keeper - eyes on the ball, jumping for 50/50 ball and collides with keeper who goes down like the Queen Mary and ref produces the yellow - cue advice from the stands.

My thoughts on players and bearing in mind I didnt have a programme.
- #12 when he came on at 1/2 time, think it was Milne, looked very good and caused them problems
- Marco looked dangerous although seemed like he may have been holding back somewhat
- Musa very solid and looked to be best defender on the park
- Rowe had some great skills and looked classy
- Branch very solid and lead the team well
- Lukas had good speed but missed a couple of easy ones. Excellent finish for his goal
- #2 who came on as sub, think he got the 2nd goal looked sharp but also missed 2 sitters
- #13 in the midfield looked classy and controlled the middle of the park

Some work to do before Colombia but with a few games together I think this team will gel and go alright.

Define poor? What were you expecting? 5 yard passes and pretty triangles all day long? If you were you obviously don't know anything about NZ football.

Three for me, and two for them.

I thought we played well. Finishing was poor but we created plenty of chances and dominated from start to finish.

To be fair even the nz coach did not think we played well. Nerves or a bit of complacent probably played a part I think. Onwards and upwards from now though.

The best team qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, no doubt about it. New Zealand had a stronger mentality when it mattered and you can't argue with four wins from the four matches.

Dakota Lucas had a dead set penalty shout turned down by referee Norbert Huata and James Musa and Marco Rojas both hit the woodwork. Apart from Himson Teleda's 22nd minute leveller, Solomon Islands didn't create another clearcut chance that I can recall.

From the matches I saw, I'd pick these players for a tournament XI, coached by Chris Milicich. Purely my opinion, of course.

Cheers,

Gordon Glen Watson

Why surprised? Free entry, World Cup entry on the line, big NZ stars like Marco playing, and Auckland is full of Solomonians or whatever the correct adjective is.

Oh, I get it. You think that Aucklanders don't go to football. <!-- End Member Post -->

Im suprised. And in fact Aucklanders dont go to football often unless its really important. Those who dont hate football are EPL supporters. Mind you every time I get down to the malls and to the youth football games I see a few Phoenix shirts so I guess there could be a good turnout. Ive even seen the odd Melb Heart shirt at an ACFC game.

FIFA U-20 world cup draw

Pretty tough draw to be honest - Portugal are traditionally very strong at age-grade stuff (although Croatia beat them 5-0 in European Championships last year, woot, woot), and so are the African sides. South Americans are traditionally difficult opponenents for us.

Four third placed temas will advance to knock-outs, so if we can get one result it could give us a chance of staying in the tournament beyond the group stages. But will be pretty tough.

Portugal will be our toughest opponents - Cameroon could be our best chance for points but if we were going to choose a South American opponent maybe a bit better suited to our own strengths, it would be a team like Uruguay.

One of the key questions for me is whether or not Chris Milicich continues with the approach he's chosen to take during these qualifiers or make some adjustments with this group in mind.

The team will look different come tournament time with Wood an obvious starter and Cameron Lindsey in midfield as well.

Hopefully with these two coming in we will look to keep a little more possession.

I was impressed by Cain when he game on in the tournament and Bevin as well. But for me and i can't recall his name at the moment the holing midfielder looked very good. (not Sole the other boy).

Next weeks friendlies are going to be very inportant in helping us gauge where we are.

To anyone who watched most of the games, how did Cory Chettleburgh play? Quite interested as he was always pretty good for Manawatu who are my local team.

I can understand the stance on letting wood continue with Brighton and not asking him to play in this tournament

Cameron Lindsay however? Was he considered even good enough to be picked by the coach? If he was good enough was there any advantage in having him play youth football in Blackburn whilst this tourament was being played?

Auckland will rise once more

I liked what I saw of Chettleburgh. Quick and combative. Scored the first goal against the Solomons in both games, I think.

Was Lovemore injured when the squad was announced? Thus ruling him out? Because he was playing for Onehunga today, very badly too.

If you would just read the story linked to above...

[quote]Leaving for Korea tomorrow, the under-20s have been invited to take part in the Suwon Cup, a four-team tournament including the host nation, one of the pre-World Cup favourites Nigeria and New Zealand's Group B opponents Uruguay. [...] European-based Cameron Lindsay (Blackburn Rovers), Michael Built (Northampton Town) and Luis Esteves (Belenenses, Portugal) will be at the Suwon Cup, as will Waitakere United's Sean Lovemore.

Actually, the timing of the tournament isn't great - happening in the middle of Champions League and Europa League qualifiers, and start of the lower leagues in England.

Sean Lovemore looked poor and squealed everytime he skied the ball yesterday at Melville, heard Alex Carr is going also as the 3rd keeper.

I thought Nick Branch, Andy Bevin and Dakota Lucas look good. Is Nick based here? James Musa and Marco Rojas were easily the standouts though.

Andy Bevin and Dakota Lucas have impressed but you have to think Rojas is one of the two.

Dakota Lucas didn't impress me a great deal. He scored a couple well taken goals, but also missed a host of chances, particularly in the final.Andy Bevin always did well off the bench and must have been pushing for a start. Good goal in the final but two poor misses aswell.

I would be surprised if it were him that was identified. I was actually reasonably impressed by Milne, he was a lot bigger than i imagined for a winger and still technically pretty good with the ball at his feet.

My guess at the two Rojas and Musa.
