Oly Whites on the Telly?

Every four years I end up turning the telly off half way through the Olympics because of the way they flick constantly to 'priority' events and thus miss vital parts of those deemed by some half-brained producer to be 'non-priority'.

The worst example of this (of course) is the coverage of footy, where they exit footy coverage to cross to the badminton, where we have the pleasure of watching one rally, before crossing back to the footy where we are informed that we have just missed a goal.  We then break for advertisements just as Ronaldinho is lining up a volley.

I guess you get my point - they half cover everything.

At the recent FIFA U17, U20 and womens world cups we have had the pleasure of having sky cover these events and thus we got to see the New Zealand games IN FULL.

Does anyone know what sort of coverage we're going to get at the Olympics?

i doubt we will see games in full, i seem to rememer that during pool play you dont see full coverage of nz basketall, hockey and other team sports. we will get highlights i would imagine. but tvnz are saying they have two internet channels as well as an extra channel on freeview so maybe 1 of those 4 will be completely based around team sport but who knows

i think some of the football, not sure which games and whether both men and women, precede the opening ceremony, so tvnz shouldnt have many competing sports to worry about, at least initially. Nevertheless, given TVNZ's track record when it comes to footy, I am certainly expecting to be disappointed and frustrated.

For those of us outside NZ. Does anyone know if there is going to be any matchcast live on the internet through the fifa or olympic sites?

If we build it, they will come...

I'm told that the ceremony when the NZ flag bearer is named is happening at around the same time as the Oly-Whites play their first game (NZ vs China) ... so knowing TVNZ the ceremony will get priority coverage over the football game.

coverage by tvnz wont start till after the opening ceremony so the games before tha definetly will not be on, highlights in the news i guess

Re TVNZ coverage of football from the Olympics, I have received the following response from Murray Needham, Head of TVNZ Sport, in relation to coverage of the two NZ football games that will precede the Games Opening Ceremony:

The pre Opening ceremony football can be seen in two ways. It will be on Sport Extra which is the complementary 24/7 channel running during the Games on Freeview or alternatively you can catch the games via online as we will have 4 channels available via the computer, TV ONE, Sport Extra and 2 more additional channels showing live Olympic content. TV ONE will not get underway until the evening of the Ceremony.

Thanks Graham.

While it is some relief that there is some means of watching those pre ceremony games, it is still massively disappointing and typical of TVNZ that they will not simply broadcast the games.

NZ is playing the Olympic hosts at the Olympics in the world's most popular sport, and yet I will have to watch some patchy internet feed on my laptop or at my desk. If TVNZ is able to screen via Freeview, then it must have the feed, so if it has the feed why on earth cant it screen the matches so we can all watch from the comfort of our couch. It's on at close to midnight. It's not as if its competing with any TV that anybody will miss.

Football is not some underground sport and football fans are not third class citizens.

Ah, football possibly isn't actually as important as the opening ceremony. While it may seem like waffly crap, the stuff said has more to do with olympism than the actual sports themselves.

Does anyone actually realise there's more behind the olympics than just people winning medals? In fact to mirror the cultural aspect of the ancient games they had artistic competition on the early modern games. The man behind the modern games won (under a pseudonym) a bronze medal for poetry at the 1912 games.

Perhaps we should sell football to TV execs as an underground sport...

Have you heard of 'football'?.....It's the latest new thing to hit the public so get in now before it's too cool

Afterall, Kiwi's like being low-key underdogs and the brassy hype like we're starting to see in the Super 14 is a natural turn-off and a ratings killer.

It's NOT the opening ceremony - it's when they announce who will carry the flag at the opening ceremony (I'm pretty sure it doesn't take 90 minutes to say somebody's name!)

Sorry, midread what you said. I'd say that the ceremony is probably more important to most NZers than football. But yeah, surely they could fit coverage around it, can't be that long a ceremony.

the flag ceremony is never screened live, ever! you'll get a news spot for it but it is never live on tv. coverage of the olympics do not start till the opening ceremony.
will 4kings or the bencher have freeview and access to the game b4 the opening ceremony?

http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/80926,legal-threat-claim-over-olyroos-outrage.aspx

Channel Seven is stuffing up Soccer again with their bias to AFL coverage.

Does this sounds like what has happen here with the Rugby over Soccer mentality in TV coverage or what?

http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/80927,sbs-our-hands-are-tied.aspx

Maybe we should move to Oz for a couple of months to watch SBS channel to catch the football games.

Happens at every olympics, long and short of it is that they can't cover every sport and at least we have it on the net. I think we're actually doing ok when we have several channels available, has been a lot wors in the past

Honestly though, if rugby became  an Olympic sport, guaranteed TVNZ would show every NZ match live and in full.

JD, some of the games precede the opening ceremony. they are not competing with other sports. Why not show them? My understanding is that kick off is late in the evening, so they are not even competing with any tele of note.

SUrely, we shouldnt have to watch NZ v the Olympic host nation on some patch internt feed on our laptop.

That is true, I'm just comparing it to the last olympics when the final was reduced to half an hour highlights at 10.30. But yes, that is fair...just try and find the quickest internet connection you can sammy!

Theolympic civerage does always chop between sports, works well with athletics, swimming etc, not so well with team sports. Watching the tall blacks was very frustrating last time round

would there be an issue about their ability to show events starting before the opening ceremony? in terms of the rights package

you are right ML, we are grateful for crumbs from the sports' table

hopefully as the Phoenix and YF grow we can exert more pressure on the media and be more of a presence in the minds of advertisers and marketters etc

having Sony on board seems  a great start

well, tvnz is showing the games prior to the ceremony on freeview and the internet, so they've got those rights. Either they aren't applying their right to broadcast via normal tele or they were too tight to buy that right.

60 consecutive hours of football coverage to start on Freeview's SportsExtra channel...

Women:
vs Japan, Live 9pm August 6th
vs Norway, Live 11.45pm August 9th
vs USA, Live 11.45pm August 12th

Men:
vs China, Live 11.45pm August 7th
vs Belgium, Delayed 8am August 14th

Hopefully the lack of coverage of the Brazil game means it's going to be on TV1.

There is also live coverage of the Women's 3rd place match and Final and highligts of the Men's 3rd place match...haven't yet found any TV listing for TV1's coverage plans.
