Well, looking at the game in the wider picture of things, a good result, a bit lucky, but we were in a foreign hostile theatre, so we did well.
Pasty 7.5 Did very well, two saves kept us in it
Siggy 8 Made crucial interceptions, good tackles and got forward more than I've seen him
Nellie 7 A strong leader, very good
Vicelich 6 Won some useful headers
Leo 5.5 Worked hard getting back in that position, only had one useful run
Brown 5.5 Worked hard, didn't give away any dumb fouls
Elliot 6 Closed players down well, passing not as composed as usual
Lochie 5.5 Mostly defended, very one dimensional going fwd
Killen 7 Looked threatening
Fallon 6 Tried hard
Smeltzy 5.5 Was closed down well
McGlinchy 8 Fitted in well at this level
Woods 6.5 Was keen, happy to take them on

What do you think?
Smeltzy 6

Bump Paston up to 8. Still not confident, but a couple excellent saves.

Nelsen up a bit to. Showed his class. Other than that, fair enough

no-one is mentioning how Paston had no idea about the free kick (stood still ball watching) and come to think he had no idea about a couple of shots (luckily they missed the goal)

but having said that he did make some good saves.

That free kick was a bullet if it would've gone in he would have had no chance, no time to react..

that's funny, he was also slow to react with the Hernazdez free kick AND the Jordan free kick.....

I'd say that its quite hard to rate players who are playing out of position or have not much time, but I think Wood and McGlinchey had outstanding showings.  Wood couldn't have done too much better IMO. Apart from score and not be offside. So basing a ten on a perfect 30 mins, I'd give him a 7.5.

Bertos was scary at times. Great run up the field, but to be honest, I cant remember him getting a challenge in and so many times the ball got through his way. a harsh 4.5 or 5 from me. I think he is a great player, but even Scott or Mulligan may have proved more defensive there.

Smeltz was playing where I would have had Bertos to be honest. He did have an average night, but he worked hard, and when he did get the ball, made some nice crteative balls but also wasnt afraid to play conservative. Him and Fallon both had similar showings, and I'd say 6/6.5 for them.

Nelsen 8 for me. Sigmund 7.5.

And Paston, well he couldn't have done much better to be honest. Apart from the almost screw up from the cross, and getting rounded by tgheir fdailure of a finisher. He didn't really have a lot to do at points, but when he did, he proved himself. 8 for me. 10 would be more confidence on the free kicks, taking that ball into the box, and not getting rounded.

What an excellent effort by our boys and we were well worth a point in difficult conditions.
The attack looked capable we defended well most of the time although they exposed our lack of pace down the inside left and right channels too often for comfort. Big problem was in the centre of midfield until McGlinchley came on and gave us some creativity. Brown is crap and must make way has no football brain a first touch like a blacksmith and nil creativity. I saw him for the Phoenix against the gold coast too.
Booked my flights and tickets can`t sit here and watch it on TV(would have to listen to that nauseating dweeb who does the commentary for SkyNZ what`s his name? he is so naive and bores us with irrelevant trivia about players when he should be focused on the game!) this is going to be a night of high drama.

Jordan free kick was a keepers mistake, every keeper makes a mistake. Can't believe you brought up the Hernandez freekick as his mistake. Sure you are not thinking about your FIFA game?

I think it's pretty obvious he struggles with FK's. Too often he doesn't even move. Just rooted to his spot.

Pasty 7.5 Crucial saves, should've been better in command of his area and flapped once or twice. Did come out to stop their many through balls very well though.
Siggy 8 A couple of goal saving tackles. One of the best games I have ever seen him play. Was amazing.
Nellie 8 Many times came out of the line to shut down a Bahrain attack in midfield. Terrific work.
Vicelich 7 Not as good as the above two but still solid enough - got outpaced once or twice but that is to be expected
Leo 6 Played in a position which didn't suit him whatsoever. Tried hard but was never going to be effective there.
Brown 5.5 Not too good. Tired very quickly - allowed a lot of space
Elliot 6 Bit like Brown. Didn't play to the standard that he can. (I think that he is our best player when on song) I think he struggled in the heat
Lochie 6.5 Struggled a little against the pace of the Bahrain team but got a couple of nice crosses in and still covered reasonably well
Killen 6.5 What a goal it would've been if his half bicycle-kick (don't even know what to call it) went in
Fallon 7.5 Won pretty much everything in the air - that is what he is there for, so I thought he did his job well
Smeltzy 5.5 Very quiet. To be fair, he had to track back a hell of a lot
McGlinchy 8 Absolutely terrific. Provided impetus and released a bit of the pressure on the defence when we badly needed it.
Woods 6 Looks lively but didn't get enough touches to really rate

well the keeper should at least make an effort. (and not just with his eyes)

As a keeper, I have failed to move for the odd freekick in my time. Sometimes, by the time you've taken it in, it is too late to make an effort. You'd just be diving after the event - which is even worse of a sin than failing to react at all.

Anyway, this is a thread about NZ players v Bahrain - not A-League incidents isn't it?

I voted Siggy. He made one or two mistakes, as will any player, but I love his commitment to the cause and that drew my vote.

I didn't like Smeltz playing so wide and would have preferred Bertos up there. Not sure how that would be accommodated into such a formation though. It often looked 4-3-3 to me, particularly when we getting crowded out in the midfield.

Can't wait for the second leg!

Team get a 10.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

i thought fellon was average, sure he won headers but he looked soft, got pushed off the ball and didnt go into tackles.
also thought brown was poor even by his standards. so pasty was lost on acouple of occasions, namely the free kick and one or two crosses and when he got rounded but he made the saves when needed and kept a clean sheet. give him a break

Nelsen was immense and Pasty was excellent.  I was walking in Pasty wonderland last night.

McGinchy was quality when he came on - so much energy and some excellent touches.  He has to start in the second leg for Brownie.  I like Brownie and Elliott both as players, but they are a bit too similar and the wee man will offer something a bit different.  Defensively, his energy meant that he could get out and pressure players a bit further up the field, so we do not lose too much.

It was tough conditions to play in - I was sweating just watching.  Every player worked their nuts off and deserve praise for that.

Oi Oi also mentioned that Lochy was one dimensional going forward - as ugly as it was, him lumping diagonal balls to the far post was very affective with the height we had there - Rory won a number of headers across goal, and we were a bit unlucky not to get something out of one of them.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Agree with Frankie, Paston had a great game and looked very good.
Our back three worked well together and didn't look too troubled for most of the game.

Our areas of concern probaly were our wing backs, but i will forgive them as they both worked incredibly hard in an unfamiliar role.

McG to start the next game in the only change i'd think could happe. Thought fallon deserved to stay on over killen who was awol a lot.

Would lke to see Wood start for Killen, but wont happen.

I would bump Nelsen up to an 8, his calmness, control, organisation, and the ability to read the game and cut out dangerous balls kept us together at the back.  Would also bump Lochhead up to a 6.5.  Don't remember them looking dangerous down our left flank at all, and some of his early balls to the back post (not the easiest ball to judge) were quite threatening.

Also, I have to agree with the Paston love.  The freekick dipped very late and looked quite well over when it passed the plane of the bar to me.  Not sure what he was supposed to do when he was rounded - he came out to narrow the angle in a 3 on 1 situation and was beaten by a good move.

The youngsters take it for me !!

McGlinchy 8 - blinding put himself about well & caused the a-rabs problems everytime he got
                      the ball.

Woods 8 - lively good positioning.

Start them both in the home leg Mr Herbert.

Those a-rabs dive more than Drogba & Ronaldo send 'em off for "time wasting" and cheating !

I thought Wood looked better than Fallon. sure Fallon won some headers but Wood looks like more mobile and has a better touch.

Tough match for Elliot and Brown. With 3 up front and Leo and Locky floating between wingbacks and midfield meant Elliot and Brown were often outnumbered. That showed with the ease the Bahraines often  move from defense to attack.

For me it should be 442 in Wellington....play Brown and Elliot CMs and mclincey and leo wide and 2 up front. only problem is RB. Scott hasn't played a real match since Con Cup.

I think yo are on the right track 4-4-2 but i totally disagree about the centre midfield pairing. The lack of space was exposed time and time again. McGlinchley must start in the centre with Elliott. I don`t rate Brown at all doesn`t have a football brain at this level. Fallon and Killen are similar players and got in each other`s road a few times. Maybe Wood could play wide leftin midfield  would certainly keep their right back at home more. Right back is a big problemfor us  i haven`t seen enough of the options there to comment.

Nice.

A big no on McGlinchey out wide. he has to be in the centre and running the show...he made a good impression as a sub against tired players...

I think Wood and Fallon are different types of players and both very handy.

Yeh I have heard a lot of praise somewhere for Killen, but I didn't notice him that much. If you thought he had a good game can you tell me why? Smeltz needs to play better at home..I don't think the tactics of trying to hit the big three in the air worked, as they often had 5 back around them. Might be better with Mac working the ball around and providing them service...

might be worth trying again...Selection dilemma for Herbert. Mac for Elliot or for Brown? Who is supposed to be providing the distribution?

nice to have options I guess!

OK if Bertos could handle the pressure of playing RB, surely Scott who does have experience in this position could do just a good a job. Then Bertos up field in place of one of the strikers, and McGlinchey for Brown. so a 5-3-2? Bertos and McGlinchey's creativity will be able to set up Smeltz/ Killen. I'm very confident of this formation, just a question of RB.
Even 433 is reliant on the RB spot.

Sigmund or Vicelich could do it in a back 4. Just so that we dont drop Scott straight there?
