Having read the reports and postings, I have no doubt this was no "riot" and was overzealous policing unncessarily causing aggro. Unfortunately, in my experience the true cause and the actual scale is not what gets reported. It'll be "All Whites Fans in Riot" - hopefully not, but that's how the tabloids would approach it back home in England.

It'll be interesting to see what the news channels actually report. At least the Stuff article looks properly toned instead of leaping to the normal conclusion of blaming the fans.

Police spokesman Motlafela Mojapelo denied there were any major incidents, however, saying "police escorted the fans to the city centre without problems".

Another police spokesman, Colonel Hangwani Mulaudzi, also said it was peaceful, saying "police told them to move on, that the game had finished and they obliged. Everything was friendly".

Yeah...looked real bloody friendly having said the photos and first hand reports.

Terrible.

The photo 20 seconds in (amongst others) makes it look like they just went up on mass, and shoved everyone with shields and battons into the exit.
If thats their idea of friendly...

the stadiums were all different as to how they did things. these guys were anal. but the armed security guys were pretty decent. just their bosses were t**sers. There was no scuffles that i saw. dont even know the guys in that pic. Very poor of them to man handle Smith. Funniest thing was Woodie Patrick ending up upside down in the security net below us. Turns out he jumped into it on purpose.

Lol, having a beer in Polokwane with 2 of the lads in those Stuff pics right now watching Esp/Chi.

Limpopo has a rep in the previous admin as being very much a martial law place by the way. Was apparent by the way people felt about insisting on having their ticketed seat regardless of all the empty ones nearby.

Sounds like a few of the security twats at Westpac !!

The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.

I got a mate who is over in SA and he said that alot of the trouble was started by some of the players ( Ryan Nelson ) a few others was started by them trying to get to there familys

I would counter that by saying it was probably started by the police who wouldn't let the NZ players to go and see their families.

AWs players came over to try and celebrate with the fans after the match, Tommy Smith tried to get through to grab something from his mum and was physically man handled back by security.  Leo the same who was trying to get to his brother in the crowd.

Kind of got the crowd's back up a bit, as well as some of the other players (Wodd, Nelsen) who had a go at the security.  Players ended up going in to change then all of a sudden there were guys in body armour pushing everyone back out of the stadium.  I certainly wasn't asked to leave by anyone before they sent in the cops and it was completely over the top.  Because everyone was still a bit annoyed about the players not being able to head to the crowd generally the fans were not that happy about riot police being in their midst.

But as soon as those guys showed up Hone Patrick and a couple of others saw the potential for trouble and told everyone to leave and basically everyone just headed out into the concourse, it was really pretty minor, few words were said to the cops but nothing major at all.  Very poor policing compared with the friendly atmosphere in Rustenberg and Nelspruit but no biggie.
