You'd save a lot more if your next flight up here was a one-way ticket. Plus you wouldn't have to live in Christchurch

give them big refund and  move them to another venue/day (still 3 months) and then cash in big time on the AWs match!!

It was previously indicated in media that a condition of this game was that Paraguay field their best team. Presumably AUstralia also expecting similar. However, it would hardly surprise me to see they are a few players short of the WC side.

I am more worried about the team we put together. We need to put out a top side with our European players back on deck. It is a tough ask for our lads to travel this far but I think if NZF can lock this October window into the calendar every year for a really decent home fixture then the players should make a committment to be available for it each time. If the players want to be looked after, they need to play their part.

I couldn't agree more. There was a lot of talk immediately after the World Cup about New Zealand Football not repeating the mistakes of 1982, and a good deal of that came from the players themselves. They now need to front up for this fixture with a minimum of fuss and bother. No bullsh*t about injuries or "the manager doesn't want me to go".

I don't care where it is, I'll be there.  Would be nice to have it here in Wellington, but would be happy to travel also.

Learn from this man, 2b, he has initiative.

Another way is murder, though that tends to be frowned on nowadays for some reason.

Am glad its on, best team we've had at home baring the Aussies, since the early '90s when England came here.

I'd still like another game in that window against a lower AFC/OFC team for two reasons:

1) We just don't play enough anyway, esp at home.
2) Two AW games at home in a week would generate significant media and public interest.

I'm sure the profits that NZF will make from Paraguay would easy cover any loss the other game may possibly generate.

If you can do it often playing away is much more fun as an event.  Obviously a tuesdya isn't ideal but still a lot more fun night out often

Bring over Indonesia if we sign Bambang! Paraguay in Wellington, Indonesia in Auckland (or Dunedin for Ahmad's benefit), sounds good to me.

Arse it all. I know Paraguay has a commitment to Australia on Saturday but there is f**k all chance I"ll get to fly up to Wellington (as my pick for where it will be played, I'd put money on it) on a Tuesday on time for kick off and get back for a 4am start.

Tuesday is not the best day for anyone travelling, no matter where the game is. But then that's what annual leave is. People should stop getting so ansty about where the game is, why not enjoy seeing the country!

I'll be there, flag cape and all.

I'm considering flying home (from Japan) for the game. Totally back a Chch game (I'm from Welly) but if they can't do it, I'm sorry but it has to be Wellington. Waikato/Nth Harbour have no evidence to prove that many people would show up (sorry to the Northern faithful), maybe on a Saturday night but Tuesday it has to be the tried and true. Plus, "another" Wellington game? We've only had the one big one recently, in terms of AWs. After years of Aukkers I think noone can complain if we got two in a row.

I'll take the whole week off if I have to but I also have 25 days annual leave to use up. Bring it to Wellington!!!

Mt Smart...1981? U17 Word Cup 1999?

This isn't a club game its our National team and you don't have the monopoly on them . Yes you have only had one big game recently, but its more than the rest of the country has had. The previous AW's home game was cancelled thanks to Winston Peters - can hardly blame us 'Aukkers' for that. And I'd also like to point out that I was at the Bahrain game with about 1/2 dozen other mates from Auckland and a couple of mates that ferried up from Chch. I lost count how many people I met in Welly that weekend that were from outside the capital.

Some people on here just need to pull their head in.

Rant over.

Wasn't the previous AW's home game against New Caledonia at NHS.  The scheduled Fiji game was before the Vanuatu debacle here. Hard News2010-08-09 09:45:09

Still. When was the last 'meaningful' game played outside Wellington? sh*t at least you guys have the Nix to go and watch every other week.

Yeah but only Wellington have proper fans now Hammer Head. They all magically appeared from nowhere in late 2007.

No argument from me that football fans should be grateful to Wellington for their support of the  game; but to put it in context we didn't have Serepisos or Smeltz or Ifill or a team worth paying money to watch (even though I did). You can't tell me that Wellington would have had better crowds to watch the same team.

And to say that you've only had one meaningful game recently when no-one else has had any, and to say Auckland always hosts the All Whites is utter tosh.

New Caledonia.  Malaysia tour went to Chch and Auckland.  Last domestic Oceania Cup final was played in front of 5000 at Ericsson.

The All Whites have played 3 meaningful games in Wellington in the last 15 years, Auckland have had every age group tournament, all but two World Cup/Oceania qualifiers, and all but two friendlies... and bugger all people have gone to any of them.

I know I was at just about all of them.

They also magically appeared for the Kingz highest crowds, and the two biggest All White crowds in the last 15 years as well.

I have nothing against games at NHS, and I don't care where this game is played but can people please use facts.

I wasn't aware that everyone at those All Whites games was from Wellington. Spose i should update my passport to show i was born in Wellington then.

And hardly any one else is using facts especially when it comes to the Wellington vs Auckland debate so why should i?

Okay, so only Aucklanders go to games in Auckland but the rest of New Zealand goes to games in Wellington ?

Good point.  Wellington it is then.

More.  i reckon at least 5000, maybe more.  Likewise folks from Dunedin, Christchurch and Hamilton.

One of the advantages of Wellington is the cities (and the stadiums) accessibility from everywhere.

So if 5000 Aucklanders have no trouble going down to Wellington for a game there's no reason why Wellingtonians can't follow suit and travel up to Auckland for matches.

the stadium also makes wellington a better "destination". proximity to hotels, bars etc give signif advan over NH in partic.

although, i am very favourable to this particular game being played outside welly

Most Aucklanders can't be arsed travelling over the bridge for matches Buffy.  Also, are you sure I'm the person you should be debating that with Buffy ?

Does Wellington run the risk of getting footballed out?
Where the casual football/sports fan picks and chooses their games?

Yes because i'm not singling out the individual (you) but speaking about the collective (all Welly football fans).

You'd do well not to sever ties with Auckland in a football sense. We play an extremely important role in the progression of NZ football whether you like us or not.

Hold on, the question is not "can't be arsed", it's "would prefer not to be stuck in an hour-long traffic jam, and public transport is only now becoming less than total crap". Do you have any idea how long it takes to get from, say, Papakura to Albania, sorry, Albany? Imagine if all the Nix games were at a stadium just outside Otaki.

I think the best thing would be to move this game to Defensores del Chaco in Asuncion and then we wouldn't need to have this discussion.

I left Wellington at 9:00 in the morning and was generally over the bridge by 17:30.  Prior to that I left Hamilton at 15:30 and never missed a kick-off at either Ericsson or NHS - with the exception of the opening game of the 99 U17 WC when my car short circuited it's battery on the bonnet and died in the middle of State Highway One in a cloud of smoke.  I lost an hour swapping cars.

Excuses.  In my experience the majority of Aucklanders find excuses not to attend a football match rather than finding a reason to attend.  There are exceptions but Kingz and AW crowds in the last 10 years say there aren't many.
