meh... who knows whats in store for us? I wouldnt be surprised if we only had 2-3 away games per year. And none at home (excluding Oceania Nations Cup). Geography is not our friend as far as international football goes.
But i will say this, I'll travel the length of the country to watch an international football match in NZ against a nation outside of our Confed. As im sure alot of people would. In a heart beat.

many countries will play international friendlies on 11 August

90% of our friendlies should now be played in the US, Asia or Europe - the key is to make it simple for our key players (Nelsen, Wood, Killen, Reid, Smith, Fallon, etc) keeping them involved. It is not likely that they will fly 24000 miles for a friendly against Malaysia in Auckland, but they will go to LA for a game against Mexico again, or over to Europe to play one of the smaller nations there.
It is tougher for the Nix players, but you build your squad around your star players.
All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

We will also find it very hard to get teams to come here (especially quality teams).

Is the next Oceania Nations Cup and WC qualifiers going to be the same combined event again or is Oceania going to revert to two tourneys as it should be?

I would say almost certainly combined - cost wise this makes sense for the smaller nations I guess.

The next South Pacific Games which decides who makes the final Oceania group isn't until 2011 so I doubt they would have time to run an ONC.

India will face Australia in 2011 Asian Cup Group C,
do they want to play with AW before Asian Cup ??

The fact that the two Tourneys are one meaning only10 qualifiers and 3 Confeds Cup games before the next WC should be the kick up the bum that NZF needs to switch to Asia. Stick with Oceania and the AWs will end up like NZ did after '82. disco_mart2010-06-15 19:45:25

Without knowing what NZF are thinking, I would "hope" they have someone at the WC now, who's job it is to make contact with other national sides to discuss future friendlies. Ideally, as soon as the WC is over, we - the fans, should have the next friendly date penciled in.

If we keep performing as we have thus far friendlies should be easier to come by, given that our World Ranking should hit the top 50 as we will be more desirable opposition. That said, I think it is better for most if the vast majority of our games are played overseas due to the above-mentioned access difficulties for our players.
That said, playing India here before their game vs Aussie would be a decent fixture for us and them. At least the crowds would be big.

Ray Wilkins also takes that view in today's SST. He argues that sorting out a good fixture list and keeping Ricki on are crucial for NZ to build on the profile and success we've gained

I think Oceania needs to make a deal with Asia:
- top Oceania team into last round of AFC World Cup qualifying;
- top two Oceania teams into qualifying for Asia Cup.
Win-win: Oceania continues to exist but NZ (and one other good team) get meaningful games between World Cups.

India were invited to the 1950 World Cup, but had to pull out because they weren't allowed to play barefoot. I read it on Wikipedia so it must be true.

You are correct, I remember seeing a documentry about the barefoot Indian team when I was in the Uk in the late 90s

I thought I heard on saturday scoreboard (may have been another radio show) Ricki saying they'd love to get a quality team over here and pack out westpac stadium. whoo hoo love it that he didn't say Auckland.

According to NZ Football twitter, they are hoping to have a game here in the October Fifa window.
Think Ricki may have mentioned it when he arrived at the airport yesterday.

I see no problem with one game being played in Auckland. The All Whites are a national team.
I think that Australia/South Africa would be perfect opposition because of the familiarity from rugby for the average person in NZ.valeo2010-07-04 14:47:13

Tri Nations football?
Want to see South Africa in Wellington to be honest. As long as we get a fixture, I'm happy.

I think it would as well. Can't underestimate how many of those on November 14th came from around the country, likewise the Phoenix big crowds.
The things Wellington does offer though is a centre point for those that travel, and a proven record of support.

Two games would be awesome! As long as the Jarpies on the Shore keep their vuvuzelas at home, I'm there. Well, I'll be there either way. I'd definitely go down to Wellington for the Oz game too.

Wonderful logic - support for New Zealand is at an all time high, so let's play a match in Auckland so the locals can support the opposition.
That being said, I'm all for having a match in Auckland...so long as it's in addition to a match in Wellington.

Would be interesting to see if all the hype is still around in October and whether we would get our overseas based players back. Its a shame its not already a done deal so tickets could go on sale now.

Australia had already arrange away friendlies in Slovenia (August), Switzerland, Poland (September)
is it difficult for AW ??

As Australia don't even have a manager currently, I'm going to call this unlikely.

I think the logic of playing Tri nations type games for the All Whites is flawed. Just because we have a traditional rivalry in eggball with the Springboks does not mean that the public will immediately get stirred up by the prospect of a game of football with South Africa.
Lets face it.....it will be hard enough to get our Euro based players back for a friendly let alone persuade a European team to fly half way around the world.
In reality Australia would bring in the crowds. But the obvious opposition would be an Asian team. Close proximity makes it easier and cheaper to get them here. A game against Sth Korea or Japan or China would give the guys a great game. Even a second tier side like Indonesia would be OK.

Yep, needs more taking a leaf out of USA's book (I believe they scheduled their match against Mexico in Utah
