Three for me, and two for them.

The ONC qualifiers before th 1-0 win over Aus at Ericsson. TBH, I'm not certain it was Vanuatu and at work i can't check but I sat in an empty NHS watching NZ play the group stages.

So you're comparing an Oceania Nations Cup match during the day to a World Cup Qualifier at night?
Three for me, and two for them.

I'm comparing two full strength competitive New Zealand matches played midweek in bad timeframes.

One was played when most people are at work (9-5) the other was played outside those hours. Which do you think was going to get more matches.
Maybe you would be better served comparing it to the New Caledonia game, also played midweek on a Wed night during the same WC Qualifying campaign. We got 6,000 to that.

Auckland just don't have a good record of providing decent crowd numbers whereas Wellington [recently] certainly do. This game is costing NZF a poultice and they need to have the best chance possible of getting a return on their investment. They will go to Wellington as they will have the best shot of getting a decent crowd there.

Does Wellington run the risk of getting footballed out?
Where the casual football/sports fan picks and chooses their games?
I think some displacement effect possible due to finite nature of discretionary spend. if we have the AWs v paraguay then I imagine it will have some, albeit possibly small, impact on Phoenix' next match. On the other hand, it is also an opportunity to expose wider group to the football experience, which Phoenix may ultimately benefit from.

I just think its a good opportunity to take the football product somewhere else. it is proven and entrenched here in Welly already, and sure, its probably the lowest risk option, but I think important opportunity given high profile of AWs right now to grow the market. This is a game that should be marketable anywhere in the country.
We in Wellington have a whole season of Phoenix to satisfy our need for football, we will have more AWs fixtures in the future, and its a good excuse for us die-hards down here to go on the road. Of course, if we cant find a stadium available or big enough outside welly then sure have it here.
btw - what is the capacity of Waikato and do we think we could get a really big crowd there??

Which as a percentage of population was the same turnout as here or slightly under, and that wasn't played at 6:00 PM.

I agree 100% with Marius. I live in Wellington and having it here would be great but I will happily take a couple of days off and travel somewhere else for this one.
I think in terms of the whole "let's not repeat the mistakes of '82" thing it would be good to see this game played in another centre.

25,800. 30K+ with temporary seating.
Over 9,000 people, including a large proportion of Aucklanders, went there for Nix v. Roar. I think it'd certainly be a good option.

Gets my pick. Take the game to the provinces. A sellout crowd at that stadium would be awesome.

Hold on, the question is not "can't be arsed", it's "would prefer not to be stuck in an hour-long traffic jam, and public transport is only now becoming less than total crap". Do you have any idea how long it takes to get from, say, Papakura to Albania, sorry, Albany? Imagine if all the Nix games were at a stadium just outside Otaki.

I left Wellington at 9:00 in the morning and was generally over the bridge by 17:30. Prior to that I left Hamilton at 15:30 and never missed a kick-off at either Ericsson or NHS - with the exception of the opening game of the 99 U17 WC when my car short circuited it's battery on the bonnet and died in the middle of State Highway One in a cloud of smoke. I lost an hour swapping cars.

Excuses. In my experience the majority of Aucklanders find excuses not to attend a football match rather than finding a reason to attend. There are exceptions but Kingz and AW crowds in the last 10 years say there aren't many.
You know we belong together...

Most Aucklanders can't be arsed travelling over the bridge for matches Buffy.

Coming from the Waikato but travelling to virtually every AW, Kingz/Knights and numerous Northern League, Summer League, Super Club etc games in Auckland, I've noticed that many of the other spectators are from the Waikato or further afield and always have been.
We have always thought that certain Aucklanders are lazy and use travel/traffic/parking as an excuse to not turn up. I remember watching Waikato FC play Mt. Albert Ponsonby and all but about five spectators were from the Waikato (I've had the same experience with Waikato NPC at Eden Park).
Kinda puts a downer on your argument Dolaras or any other Aucklander who uses transport, traffic or parking at NHS, Mount Smart or whatever as an excuse to not turn up.
That aside I do feel that now is the time that Auckland (and Waikato/BOP as we seem to make up a significant part of the crowd) gets a game to prove that it will now turn up and support.
If they don't then give the big games to CHC and Welli then (and smaller ones to Hamilton!!!).

So only a few hours to go until the announcement of the venue. Then the back-biting and parochialism can really kick into top gear!

its a shame the hawkes bay doesnt have a decent stadium (they should build one). its got a handy population base (250k) reasonably well concenrated (Napier, Taradale, Hastings, Havelock) and a good destination for travelling fans. Still, could probably only justify a 25k stadium for the region, which would be marginal for this game.
... and then i woke up

It would be more convenient for me if it was in Wellington. But if it goes elsewhere that's cool too. Lucky it's not up to us.
Let's just get behind it where ever the game is.

maybe the Napier City Council can buy that stadium in Nelspruit (which is awesome but only going to rot now) and stick it on a barge.

I doubt you'd justify getting a ground much bigger than McLean Park [about 16,000 I think] and make it pay.
I'm all for spreading smaller matches around the centres, like WC qualification games vs the Oceania nations. Chance for the locals to come out and show their support and also give a good new venue for the travelling punters to go to. Keep the big matches for the Cake Tin in Wellington and slowly ease the likes of Christchurch and Auckland in with games against nations at about the same ranking as us. Games that don't cost us a lot and risk losing the big bucks that a Paraguay game in Hamilton might do.

Just over 20mins... where is this going to be announced? Twitter? On Facebook or maybe a press conference somewhere?
NZF should jump onto something like UStream and broadcast stuff live, adds to the drama
