Response from Winston Peters

Hi all,

See my response from Winston Peters below to my letter questioning the double-standards of the Fijian Netball Manager being allowed into New Zealand, yet the Fijian Goalkeeper was not.

According to the Dominion Post and the Fiji Times, this woman is married to a Military Policeman.

I guess those media outlets didn't get their facts straight...

Apparently they were also wrong about the Father-in-law as the media seemed to think they weren't married.

I'm sure Winston is better informed than the collected New Zealand press corps.

but doesn't it still seem odd that the sevens players were still able to enter nz? a few (not sure of the numbers) are reportedly in the figian military.

then theres that whole speel about not interfering with international sporting comps that the govt claimed. isnt world cup qualifiers part of an international sport event?

still praise has to be given for responding.

What a crock, they'll let in whoever they want, or think will generate the biggest income for them. Its always been double standards.

I received a reply from Clayton Cosgrove too, although it was a few months late...
He said the netball woman in question was not affiliated to the military in any way that would mean the travel ban would apply to her, and the government has no intention of targeting any one sporting group.

Even if that is true, what about the Sevens team?

Not sure if there was any from the sevens team, but if they were it's not showing up. However, there is always seem to be someone related to someone in the military in Fiji. But it is restricted to partners, children and their partners and not to uncles or aunts or cousins.

I would have thought that the opposition to the regime would be the people who provide the information, especially on sporting teams. Maybe they pull a few players out before hand by rotating their squad for tournaments?

NZ sevens player also  has no links with the Government/Army in Fiji. With a name like Lote Raikabula glade to see we check our own players too.  Fiji must have pull their army related  players out ,as they were hopeless in Wellington

Since most of the 7s players are actually professionals playing on the circuit, I would suggest it is more likely that they would be 'cleaner' than the non-professional sports players.  However, I still believe the ban is a clumsy way to get at the military.
