RULES for the final qualifier Oct 10/Nov

Hi everyone, I'm not a crazy fan of football but have some idea of the rules on engagement for this home and away fixture.

Can someone please confirm:

1) Will away goals count double for this fixture?

2) At full time in Wellington on 14 November, what happens if the teams are tied on aggregate even after the away goals rule?

Will they have ET? Will there then be penalties? Will they instead play at a later date at a neutral venue?

3) What happens to the losing team - are they knocked out of the World Cup Qualifiers for good?

Thanks :)

1) Yes, but remember the only count double in a draw.
2) I believe ET then Pens.
3) Going home.Michael2009-09-13 15:11:26

Actually in 1.) If the teams have tied aggregated score after two legs of the playoff; either by win and lost games apiece or by drawn games, then the team with the most away goals will win the playoffs. The away goals are not doubled but merely used as a deciding factor.

2.) Full extra-time and then best out of 5 penalties then sudden death penalties. Note that there is no golden goal or silver goal rule and that the whole extra time is used.

3.) Losing team is out of the competition for good.AllWhitebelievr2009-09-13 16:28:55

Silver goal rule = the whole of extra time is used regardless of whether goals are scored. It is the alternative to golden goal where the winner is decided by who scores first.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Actually Silver goal rule can end the game after the first period of extra time.

i.e. if the scores are locked at 0-0 on aggregate and AW's were to score on the 100th minute mark, and keep that lead until 105th minute (end of the first period in extra time) NZ would win the fixture.

Salmon, you would seemingly be the man in the know. What does the Council/NZF have planned in the days leading up to the game?

And why not play all the NZFC games in Welly that weekend, two on Saturday arvo and two on Sunday arvo at Porirua Park and Newtown. Bring the whole football community to Wellington for the weekend. If the Franchises get angsty about giving up home advantage it could become an exhibition round or something.

Wellington should be all football, all the time that week

We've tried to convince them not to play NZFC that weekend but i have failed.  Apparently the schedule is too tight to have a week off.

They have changed Waitaks game to be against Manawatu on Sunday so I think both those sides are likely to be here (Waitak talking about being at the TeeDubs game). Hard News2009-09-15 11:40:52

won't/can't comment about NZFC, but WCC is hoping that the activity on Queen's wharf square on match day creates a real presence-freestyle footbal, street football, giveaways, Chicago bar is right there- the stadium is ten minutes walk. i suppose having 30,000 plus football fans in town will no doubt create its own buzz, and someway justifies a variety of activities on the day- meaning that there is no reason why there cannot be stuff happening in town/newtown at the same time-

& there will no doubt be other city theming in the week/s leading up.

there is a meeting with WCC and NZ Football events crew in a week or two to see whats up- maybe post some good ideas on here? what do you want to see- remembering that realistic budgets need to be met!*

That's not the Silver goal rule. The Silver goal rule said you only had to play the second half of extra-time if the first half ended with the scores still level. The Silver goal rule was abandoned after Euro 2004. Since then it's been traditional extra time i.e. what you describe.

Cheers HN. 10k its getting up there.  Would be awesome if it was a sell out. then they could set up a big screen in Frankits or Queens Warf, for those to watch, like the Tennis Majors and that.

Loving all these ideas for Blocked of streets. Back bencher, Four kings, Chicargo. The WCC is ualually pretty good at getting behind these sort of things.

Posably  Worng thread, but any idea if the NZF or White noise will be prodcuing All White Scarfs. White Scarf with balck writing All Whites one side, New Zealand the other. Same as the NIx ones really. Woudl definatly get one.

Check the scarf thread again.  I've put an image up of what we're working towards (about 50% likely at this point).

I have spoken to someone at the WCC and it looks unlikely we would be able to get the whole road closed of for that day as the costs involved would be prohibitive. Looking at getting permisiion to use the footpaths and carpark areas though.

Getting SERIOUS now.

So if the Welly game is 0-0 AET then we have penalties.

What happens if the score is 0-0 at full time, then 1-1 AET? Does the away goal for Bahrain put them through?

According to wikipedia it depends on the competition, UEFA yes, CONCACAF no etc. Not sure about AFC/OFC, or whether it's determained by FIFA (who btw have no set laws in their rules of the game pdf file).

True.

The only way it can go to ET is if it finishes 0-0....and once ET starts, away goals cease to have any significance, apart from the fact they are goals.

If it's 1-all, 2-all or whatever-all at the end of ET, it's penalties.

As far as I know, extra-time goals are counted in the away goals factor. Two seasons ago, the UEFA decided they didn't for the Champions League . The following season, the went back to the normal approach i.e. extra-time goals are counted in the away goals calculation.

I think the logic is that the home team in the second leg has the home advantage for extra time.

The tournament regs aren't specific:
The team having scored most goals over the two games will qualify for the next round. If both teams score the same number of goals over the two matches, the goals scored away will be counted as double. If the same number of goals is scored away or both matches end without any goals being scored, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game.

Personally, I would like to lose the away goal rule altogether. It's there to promote attacking play for the away team, but can create a defensive mind set for the home team instead. On the other hand, it helps avoid penalties.

I think ET goals do count under the away rule, it's penalty shootout goals that don't for obvious reasons.

Loyalgunner, I've heard 12k-15k figures being bandied about.

Can anyone help me out with a q: Paston's card. How many more before he gets a suspension, is it three, or is the rule something entirely different?  NZF must have been ruing their balls-up over Moss when Paston got that yellow...
