This nostalgia for "Heading for the Top" is mis-placed. It was sh*t.
So is "Stand Up".
All football songs are sh*t though, I can live with that. It's just one those universal truth don't-f**k-with-cosmic-forces situations.
Quite true, but the (relatively) good ones are catchy and easy to sing along too.
At the end of the day, NZF and similar organisations are going to go middle of the road and play safe with the choice of artist and song - hence the Feelers and Stan Walker. Shihad and Shapeshifter (suggested in previous posts) are probably a bit too alternative, for all their artistic merits.
However, IMO, "Stand Up", doesn't fill the criteria I mention above. If I want to sing a f****ing dirge at the football, I'll sing the National Anthem.
Songs like "Vindaloo" and "Three Lions", in particular work because they're lyrically simple, bouncy and catchy - despite the naffness.
Here's a link to Rik Mayall's unofficial World Cup song for England.
Again, simple and catchy. It's pretty easy to imagine a bunch of drunken English yobs singing "Come on you En-ger-land, you noble Englishmen" while running riot in SA after another penalty shootout loss.
Naff? Yes. Crap? Check. But I guarantee you'll find it easy to remember and sing along to long after you've forgotten Stand Up
