New Zealand Football / Sony Music:
All Whites fans called to Stand Up and be counted

AUCKLAND The song Stand Up, written by James Reid (The Feelers) and sung by kiwi chart topper Stan Walker has been chosen as the All Whites official anthem for the FIFA World Cup.

Bay of Plenty-raised Walker shot to fame as winner of Australian Idol, and his first single Black Box reached number one in the New Zealand charts.

Now New Zealand Football are backing Walkers version of the Feelers emotive classic specifically recorded for the All Whites in early March and finished recently in Aucklands York Street Studios to resonate with kiwi sporting fans ready to watch their team take on the World in South Africa.

Lyrically, the song captures everything this campaign is about NZF CEO Michael Glading said.

Its a great time for football in this country not least because of what the All Whites, backed by an amazing crowd, achieved in Wellington.

We face a much bigger challenge now but its exactly the sort of challenge New Zealanders can stand behind.

Walker admits he wasnt a die-hard football fan but says like many New Zealanders he has been converted by the All Whites dramatic qualification to the June-July FIFA World Cup finals.

All kiwis love to see our teams performing on the world stage and the All Whites have certainly earned my respect and support with reaching the pinnacle of their sport and giving something for the fans to be excited about.

Stand Up is now available from all digital retailers

So i'm a cheap C*** and have no $$$$ so where can I listen for free rather than buying it from a digital retailer. Note I'm not downloading it I just want to hear it.

Thank God it's the Feelers song

For a moment I could hear Stan chanting "All the All Whites stand up!" for 3 and a half minutes

Oh FFS. What is with us choosing such god awful music to lead sports campaigns.
This.

We have some stupid idea we have to use a pop song directly from New Zealand.

Premier league, Champions League, the World Cup choose inspirational songs perfectly!

Good song. Appropriate
What is it with people that have something against succesful artists who make a living out of their passion?

Average song from a band who's best days are behind them sung by some karaoke competition winner that no one will remember in 6 months - pathetic. Bring back Ray Wolfe!

Oddly enough, Stan doesn't worry me anywhere near as much as the fact that NZ Football think a Feelers track (in light of the Rugby World Cup thing) is a good idea.

^^ agreed with News. The Close Up link isn't available yet but it seemed from the story that Michael Glading "went through his music collection and chose the song" .. although he does have background in music promotion I think, surely there was more to it than that???!!!

I dont mind Stan at all.

that is quite funny. Abs get Feelers singing a British bands song, and AWs get a ozzy idol winner singing a Feelers song. some kind of trend there. wonder what will happen for the hockey WC? TruePiss singing a cover of a Stan Walker cover song? smittyz112010-04-20 19:52:15

Stand Up for the Aaall Whites. Stand Up for the Aaall Whites.

No?  not that one?

The tune and singer needs a major re-work.  Didn't exactly move me to stand up (or anything else).

Its a very downbeat song for something that should be upvibe and inspirational (haven't heard the new cover of it, just going from the old song).

If we want a decent song we have to get over the "Homegrown" or we'll never have a good song.

Hire some overseas song writer then get a half decent singer to sing it.

I just youtubed The Feelers.

Come on. I mean seriously, come on. Really, NZ? Really? That's the best we can do? Really?

I don't believe it.

haven't heard the remake - yomcat reckons it's still crap

not impressed by the mickey mouse idea of the CEO picking a track from his record collection (i expect the Fiver etc might have fun with that)

to be honest, I expect I'll be more interested in the football matches than the song, so it might not be so traumatic really

perhaps he headed too many old heavy wet leather footballs in his youth

or perhaps he's just under-prepared/lazy

Something you could chant/sing at a match might have been a longer-lived choice
its a nice enough song but doesn't seem very inspiring to me

but - hey- we'll see what the general reaction is to it
