Actually he did have a few games as a defensive midfield for the AWs and I do remember because he has very good being the best passer in the team but that was a long time ago.

Smeltz for killen= Smeltz is the perfect man to bring on around 60 min mark to chase every loose scrap.
James for Mclinchy

As much as we want to play attacking football we have to be realistic. Our best shot is to play out the draw and hope for maybe a lucky away goal. Im telling you now that if we're in a dominant position or still tied up going back to the cake tin we'll win it 4 sure. Never before have we had such a skilled, experienced team.

Nelsen in the midfield, Chris James (not in the squad) in front of him.

Awesome.  Are you the guy in Greenie's team by any chance?

i quite like JAviER's interesting views, i give my hat off for any non-new zealander who is willing to watch all nz's confed cup games and then take the time to put in some reasonably well researched posts for an outsider.

i didn't realise Chris James was not in the play off squad? didnt even realise it was announced yet.

He probably wil be in the playoff squad, but is a non-travelling reserve for the friendly against Jordan

For both of those lineups I would swap Siggy and Vicelich and have Bertos and McGlinchey switch sides. Also would rather Oughton than Brown for your second lineup.

I agree with Oska on those changes as well.

Siggy is quicker and cover better on the lateral back and Vicelich is better suited in the centre. Bertos favourite side is right wing rather than left wing and McGlinchey is left footed does more on the left than the right. Brown is likely to be the centre midfield along with Elliot although Oughton should be on the bench. Oughton is does do some similar things to what Elliot does whereas Brown can lift the work rate for aggressive defending which is his best asset.

I think that is the likely settled line-up for WCQ games.

Not sure about Siggie or Ivan as a right back.

Hope Aaron Scott gets the full 90 against Jordan to see if he's capable at that level.

LondonChris you're right I was getting my two squads mixed up...still think Javierf's a bit mental though.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I would like to see Aaron Scott start at RB against Jordan too. Didn't he play the whole 90mins against Iraq where we got our first point at a confederations cup?

I know experience counts, but if a guy is on form, and is a specialist RB lets give him a go.

Actually is he RB for his club??

Actually temporary forgot about Scott. Look really good when he came on at the confederations cup, looked very comfortable and slotted in. He seems to be a decent lateral back and hopefully he gets 90 minutes against Jordan. I think he must be on the cards to be picked up by the Phoenix, especially if the Nix gets a reverse team in the NZFC.

He seems to be a decent lateral back

It was great when he power-headed the ball from the offensive 40 towards the top quadrant of the goal bag.  The only concern was that his lateral back error rate was .853, but I guess that this is balanced out by his place on the roster also filling a point guard role.

Yee ha.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Just noticed Chris James has just had knee surgery and won't be back in training at Tampere in Finland for an estimated 4-5 weeks (at best). Guess that rules him out of any further All Whites duty this year...Ricki would have known of this when planning his squad.
Report on the Tampere United website dated 26th August: describes how he had surgery last week to fix an injured knee which has been troubling him for a while (no full movement, stiff and in pain). Will be on crutches for a while...

oh and Smeltzs AW record is legendary

Define legendary?

He's played 30 odd games for a bit better than a goal in every 3 games but the vast majority of his goals (12 or 14 depending on whose website you believe) were scored against Pacific Island opposition.

Killen has played more games, and scored more goals.

I'd say their records are very similar.

At the end of the day it comes down to what job you want them to do.  Play Smeltz in the home leg for sure, and maybe off the bench away too, but start the big man.

paper noted Fallon will prob play infront of Smeltz v Jordon

I got the impression we'd see both.

                                 Paston

                         Siggy          Nelsen/Vicelich
       Scott                                                              Lochhead

                         Vicelich/Barron/Nelsen
Bertos                                                                  McGlinchey
                                 Elliot

                    Fallon            Smeltz

Banntyne
Boyens
Mulligan
Vicelich/Barron
Brown

I'd like this to be played, a chance to better assess Scott for the RB position and Barron, Nelsen or Vicelich at DM. Only 4 other players on the bench, none of whom I can see starting  providing everyone is fit when the playoff rolls around.

/edit - Wrong thread, this is for Jordan game, Feverish confuzzled me.

Okay, I know everyone says we've got to go away and play for a draw but I'm still not sure I agree with this.  It's the same 11 players and the same size field why should it be any different?  While it's not quite the same as a league where you're sacrificing three points, I still hate the negative mentality and believe you should be positive in your game plan and let the opposition worry about defending you - if they do research on Smeltz 8 goals in 5 games in A-League, Killen scoring for Celtic and Fallon a proven Championship scorer they're going to be sh*t scared.  They will also know how crucial it is to keep a clean sheet at home so pressure will be on them.

We have in form goal scorers and ball players we need to involve.
Brown is a very good defensive midfielder and he has to be shoe in there.  Then with Elliot in front of him, our play can centre on him and he can get our attackers involved.  This leaves Bertos to work his ass off in midfield as usual.

We then need to play finishers.  If we get a chance, we need to convert it and Smetz, Killen and Fallon all offer this.  I would use Smeltz in behind the other two as he is a hard worker, and will get back, but will still be first to get into the attacking box.  Fallon and Killen can hold the ball well and that will be key all over the park - holding onto possesion.

I just feel if we go there to defend we'll do alright but it's tough to defend for 90 minutes and if we give the ball away all day we're just asking to be attacked and it's too likely the pressure will tell and we'll lose 1 or more nil.
If we score a goal earlyish (first half), then the game completely changes in our favour.

Must be an attacking team. With away goals worth two we want every one we can get.
