We have the advantage of playing at home second - All Whites to nick it in a penalty shoot-out.

Home field advantage cannot be overstated.  The US has hundreds of massive stadiums, but we play Mexico in Columbus, Ohio at a run down MLS stadium with a capacity of 22,555 because when we have traditionally drawn Mexico at home in qualifiers, it has been in the dead of winter.  Below freezing temperatures, windy and an almost 100% home fan advantage sitting right on top of them has weighed on them heavily.  Despite success at newer stadiums with larger crowds, we continue to use the La Guerra Fria (the cold war) to our mental advantage, and their mental detriment. Find and use a stadium that is the complete opposite of what they are used to.  They are not at all mentally tough.

Yes you are a football wise,  I know that you play in Columbus or Boston so to avoid being outnumbered and in the cold,  i dont know the time schedules from FIFA , but if it is up to the MEXICO FOOT FEDERATION , the 1st play-off will be at 2 pm or 3pm, to heat up the kiwis, and they will try to make them use the dark shirts that is worst for hot , wet conditions rather than the white shirt.

ESPN has leaned on the FMF to play their games in the evening, with disastrous results, so as to get the best TV ratings possible for the 30+ million Mexicans living the US.  I wonder if they will continue to take the easy cash, or will buck the trend and play in the middle of the day when they historically do to make maximum use of the oppressive heat and smog.  I would not be surprised if the game is scheduled for 1pm or 2pm.

You are welcome.  We just sent you the worst team in CONCACAF.  Don't be fooled by the resume, Mexico is ripe for the taking.  Both Panama and Mexico fold under pressure, Mexico just folds a little quicker is all.

Like the AWs will put them under pressure first up away from home..plan wil be to sit back and give them 45mins to gain their confidence and pass all around at us.

Yes you got it right with this Mexico , NZ should play like Costa Rica did today, fight the game in midfield, if you sit back and wait, they will have confidence again, and people will support them , but if they dont score a 1-0 before half time, people and time may be against them.
Yes, our strength... midfield. Where we are world renown for being tough to break down in the middle of the pitch...

Ricki will park that bus hard. Bet your house on it.

Mexico has a hard time with bunkers.  They tend to lack creativity and a killer instinct in the final third.  By all means sit back and make them find a way to break you down.  They'll likely end up sending in pointless cross after pointless cross, which your stronger and taller centerbacks will clear easily.  Then if you keep it 0-0 into the second half, their fans will probably turn on them, they'll get demoralized and you may actually find a bit of the ball and create a few chances yourself.

Well that is up to the NZ FOOTBALL to not being silly and to play the game at night or after 7 pm,  the Mexican like any other team, will try to take advantage of everything they got, because this is not a game it is a WC game, remember  Ireland vs France,  Ireland asked for a rematch or for a wild card to be the 33rd team, even BONO and the irish president tried to speak with Blatter and Fifa

Great dossier mon ami!, I am from Argentina and your remarks are like that,  you are not saying any bullshit at all.  I hate the mexican nat team too, you should have given away the game vs panama!!, i thought it was fixed in favour of Panama once they scored the 2-1, but you have a moron as a coach so, he didnt do it for "reputation bla bla bla."..It would have been lovely to see them fall from their pride, if you listen their broascasters during games, that chauvinism is really sick.  You are correct that when the team is down, the public is cold and agressive towards their home fans like England.

I hope these guys from NZ can overpower the mexicans, but it will be very hard, because they will play against the mexican team, the ref and linesmen, the officials from fifa, the attendance at Azteca, the sport networks from Mexico and USA that need Mexico at the WORLD CUP, advertising contracts etc etc etc.

Best regards, you have a great team that Bradley created and now Klinsmann is enjoying....slds  Javier François

There is a video of Telemundo doing a dual screen live shot of the US/Panama and Mexico/Costa Rica games and the reaction from the Mexican commentator is sheer ecstasy when he see the US scores while calling the Mexico game.  He severely admonishes the Mexico squad  ("remember this day Mexico.  Remember this day that when you had to do what you needed to, you couldn't and you needed the US to qualify you for you") between the two goals in stoppage time.

As for the sponsorship, there was a report earlier that Costa Rica might have had to play the game against Mexico behind closed doors because of missiles coming from the Costa Rica fans and their instance on using lasers and shooting them in the opposing teams eyes.  It smacked of favoritism because the Mexican fans are NOTORIOUS for doing that, and the US players face that against every concacaf team they play with the exception of T&T.  ESPN would also be extremely upset if Mexico did not qualify because they bought up their broadcast rights and have even dictated when US games get played when they conflict so as to have a favorable broadcast slot for the Mexico fans.

I will certainly be rooting for New Zealand because Mexico has not been playing like they want to win anything, but I expect there will be a few dubious calls in Mexico's favor in the Azteca unfortunately.

Telemundo Dual Broadcast

It reminds me of how nuts Honduran Radio went when we scored the last gasp equalizer against Costa Rica back in the South Africa qualifiers.

Oh god that is priceless.

Being able to sorta follow that broadcast makes all my high school and university Spanish worthwhile.

Here is a translation from one of the posters on BigSoccer.com. Seems fairly accurate.

TRANSLATION of most vivid parts.......
"GOOOOAAAAAAL The US of A PUTS us in the playoffs!!!!!" USA!

"It is because of the USA that we are being placed in the playoff ...BECAUSE OF THEM , NOT DUE TO YOU..NOT ANY OF YOU in the green shirts ....IT WAS THEM!!.NOT YOU!..THEY DID IT!!!!!NOT YOU! remember this forever..... KEEP THIS CLEARLY IN MIND FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIVES! You do NOTHING for the shirt, you do NOT put the effort, you have NOTplaced us in the playoffs , you HAVE NOT placed us in the WORLD CUP ..YOU WOULD NOT HAVE KEPT US ALIVE....IT WAS ESTADOS UNIDOS, NOT YOU.! .NOT YOU AND YOUR ARROGANCE/CONCEIT.....NOT YOU AND YOUR INFAMY....NOT YOU AND YOUR MORONS/PUNKS....
....
"IT IS A FAILURE.....and UNDESERVED -to go through to the playoff- WE HAD NO ARGUMENTS to earn the playoffs, THE USA, WITH SUBS , WITH MANY SUBS as the visiting team shows us once again what the USA is all about ....how to play the game with dignity, how to approach the sport..MExico is a horror, just terrible....A FAILURE....
......
THE USA HAS SURPASSED US ..They are better than Mexico in SOCCER ....THEY EVEN HAVE THE LUXURY OF PLAYING THEIR SUBS and KEEPING US LIVE.... I hope our coach wears the pants and resigns..He has failed as coach...."

Seems like a good sign for the All Whites. Can't imagine the pressure on the Mexican players at the moment...

LOL... Too many conspiracy stories here, if we had the refeeres, linesmen, FIFA, and everything in our favour we should be qualified since long ago, not having these problems... It's ok if you hate the Mexican national team and such (South Americans and U.S fans), but having to rely on those absurd conspiracy stories the Central Americans usually say is just plain laughable.

PS: I'm not against those fans having a field day over us and the mocking and such, that's deserved, but those conspiracy theories are simply silly.

Also has the all whites ever WON a game against a TOP team in a game that is important. I dont count Bahrain, China

Most notable win was probably the one against Serbia in 2010 build up to the WC. Smeltz scored the only goal of the game. Serb supporters lost their shit.

A World Cup qualifier against Mexico? Here in Wellington? Unbelievable.

This is what it's all about - going up against the best, not hiding on the fringes like some little bitch hoping to sneak a free trip to Brazil.

We are now part of the biggest story in world football for the next 5 weeks.

Jesus wept - some of you need to pull your head out of your arses and just enjoy the ride.

Can I repost this back to you in a years time when NZF are flat broke because we have got no cash from WC?

Yip sure. Because if you think whether or not we play Mexico or Panama or Honduras or Costa Rica has a major bearing on that either way then you are fooling yourself. We are playing the 4th placed team in CONCACAF, just the same as we have been all along. It's going to be fucking hard, it always was.

See that's where you are wrong. I know it's going to be hard. I liken it to having to tie your shoe laces with one hand (playing Panama). That's pretty hard. Now take away your thumb and try it (playing Mexico) - even harder. The fact they are a strong federation is not lost but the varying level of opponent with in that confederation could have made it easier. Mexico (ranked 21), Azteca (2 defeats in how long) altitude, 100k fans. Panama is infinitely more appealing. Contrast that with our form... People say Mexico are on a down and out right now. The AWs struggle to beat a lowly ranked OFC side at home and drawing with club sides...

It's an ass raping the cards for sure, but Panama would been at least a potential glimmer of hope if we do happen to get our shit sorted.

Honestly Jeff, you need to have a good rummage in your undies and check if your balls are still there.

You're the one who needs to grow up and stop being all paranoid. But well, let's play the game then:

What desicion made by a referee helped Mexico qualify in this Hex? Oh, none, because, yeah... we're not qualified. Again, if we had all in our favour we have been already qualified, not in this situation.

You can say that the penalty given against Panama was soft, and there was a similar play that could have been a penalty for Panama too that was not awarded, but this is CONCACAF, the referees are just plain bad and fail to cope with the presure of the local fans... or what about the penalty awarded to Honduras against us in San Pedro Sula, later that match there was a clear penalty against Guardado that was not awarded...

It's ok to get the usual trash talk, that's part of being fans, but just to throw up those conspirancy theories with no proof is pretty childish.

What a shame for the All Whites. It is a shame the draw was not

AFC vs. OFC
CONCACAF vs. CONMEBOL

That way New Zealand would play Jordan and Mexico play Uruguay. I think the OFC should have an automatic spot in the FIFA World Cup.

I would say we have a 5 per cent chance. If it was to happen, we would have to nick a goal away in a 2-1 loss (I can't imagine Mexico scoring less then 2 at home) and somehow defend like crazy at home, scoring from a set piece like last time.

The day where the world is actually interested in NZ football. The day where while the sun is shining so bright, Ricki Herbert and his men gear up for battle knowing they may never return. The day where Dewhurst is shitting himself with anticipation while frantically studying the team sheets. The day where NZF is chewing their fingernails while looking at the piggy bank. This is probably our biggest challenge. Not only do we have to content with >2km altitude and 100,000+ fans... the corruption involved will be immeassurable. From the tv networks, fifa, Brazil etc. The referees will be paid out, and if they don't comply then that will spell the end of their career (or worse)...

We don't really understand corruption in NZ. But in places like Mexico it's simply a way of life. We literally have everything going against us. Sky probably won't even screen the first match...

This is arguably one of the hardest tests a New Zealand representative team has ever come across. This is like the equivalent of a world cup final for us against a side that is traditionally regarded as amongst the best footballing nations in the world. I hope corruption stays out of this fixture but you just never know. South/Central America is renowned for it's corruption in politics, law, sport, government etc. The magnitude of this event for Mexico makes you question if there will be external involvement, but lets hope not.

Where is everyone going to be watching the away leg? Will people go to four kings or something to see this? Depends on the time of day it is shown in Mexico of course.

I can't wait. Win or lose, I'm gonna enjoy the ride!

I seriously doubt that. They will have their allocation and they will use it. I remember from my time at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the Mexicans had a reputation for travelling in huge numbers even without tickets. That enormously inflated the black market ticket prices for their games. They also had a reputation for being cheerful and friendly and I can only confirm that from my own experience.
So my expectation is we will have a good number of Mexicans here in Wellington on Nov 20, not only in the cake tin but also in the sports bars. I am looking forward to it.
