Hola mis amigos!

Chicano here. Just wanted to drop by and set things straight. There's been a lot of noise lately concerning the Mexican national team and unfortunately now New Zealand is now part of this sh*tstorm. Please excuse the ignorance of my fellow compadres. Alcohol is one helluva drug.

I will try to explain this in a way you guys can understand. Soccer is the most popular sport in Mexico. Its not just a game. Its our passion. Its our LIFE. Its as essential as eating and breathing. Another thing about Mexicans. We are proud. We have heart. And the will to fight on until the last second. Sort of that "macho"mentality. We have a tendency to mix Patriotism with the Mexican national soccer team. Why? They have always performed respectfully in their sport. 6 Gold Cups (most in the CONCACAF, although USA is one shy away from catching up to us) a confederations cup, and most recently a gold medal (2012). Obviously the most prestigious international tournament is the world cup, where the farthest we've ever gone is quarterfinals (twice, both times ironically have been when we've hosted it). The world cup has been an area of opportunity for Mexico. The country has instilled a belief of hope that Mexico must go farther than they've ever been before in history. Our expectations of our national team are a lot higher than they've ever been before. WHY? For the first time we've finally established a decent amount of players in Europe. Everyone knows that Europe is where you'll play the highest level of competition. Therefore its everyone's dream to make it big out there and be successful. We've had players like Hugo Sanchez (best Mexican player of all time, Real Madrid legend) Rafael Marquez (Barcelona) make a name for themselves but now we have 10+, the most ever. Combine that with the proven success of our U17 & U20 teams (2 world cup winners and 3rd place) and our expectations/hope have gone over the roof. We demand a higher level of play, performance, & results. The Mexican media does not help the cause. They always portray a negative vibe towards the team. So much criticism, hatred, judgement, unprofessionalism (yellow  journalism at its finest). Instead of supporting the team they have a tendency to break the team down. If they win a game it was either a fluke or it wasn't entertaining enough. If they lose they blame the coach, players, etc. The poor coach ends up being a scapegoat. And of course the people of the nation feed into that stuff laid out by the media. Its sad and a crying shame.

Mexico has been underperforming for quite some time now. Stress levels and pressure are as intense as they've ever been. Its quite clear that its had its toll on our staff and players. Its quite obvious to see on the pitch. They are playing with self doubt, lack of confidence, a sense of fear. They are second guessing themselves, their decision making, their tactics. Its Murphys law at the moment. And just when we thought it was over, USA gave us a blessing/curse depending on how you look at it. I was coming to terms with missing out on the world cup. Mexico was 2 minutes away from being eliminated. It would have given the federation an opportunity to clean up this mess. But no, the circus at will continue. There's a strong rumor going around that the coach brought in to replace our ex coach is now being replaced. Its a f*cking disgrace. Things will not change until the mentality of the media and federation (all the care about is making $$) change. Do you guys want to know how greedy our federation is? In fear of not qualifying to the world cup they pushed Adidas to release a new kit (that was meant to be revealed for the WC) against Panama in hope to rack up even more $$.

I'm sorry New Zealand. You guys don't deserve to be part of this. I hope we can be compadres after this is all over. Our recent clashes vs Kiwis (2-0, 2010 3-0, 2011). We are currently battling against ourselves, so god knows what will end up happening.

Saludos

Great review!!  you're  telling it as it is, also dont forget to mention that the owners of the teams are very rich barons some may have obscure connections and they are the real owners of the FOOTBALL MEXICO, that`s why a guy like Marcelo Bielsa wouldnt operate with Mexico, with guys like the Chivas president, he brought Van`t Schip and Cruyff as consultings, then they fought and the pair of dutch resigned.
And remember they hired Sven Goran Erikson a few years back, and the hype there was like a soup-opera with girls edecans and strippers all over the place and a Sven Goran look-a-like having party with whores.  So you are correct, the big money plugged in Mexico around football, is like killing the national team.

A couple of questions my loyal amigo, what about the gossip that the manager Herrera will replace Vucetich?
Is is true that Mexico will have 2 camps for the play-offs, one based in Mexico City with local based players from the teams of Mexico DF, like America,  and another camp based NZ with the european based players to gain time for the return leg?  So Mexico is gonna call up like 40 players for both legs?

Hola Chivamex10,

Thanks for the update. Sounds like the Mexican team is under enormous pressure. The NZ team is under no pressure because the whole world thinks Mexico will beat us. How it works out on the pitch on match day is any ones guess.

Has the date and time of the match in Mexico city been confirmed? Whats the weather likely to be in November?

According to FIFA's webpage

Intercontinental Playoffs

The intercontinental play-offs will be played between Mexico (fourth-placed team of North, Central America and the Caribbean), and New Zealand (Oceania winner).

1st Leg: 13/14 November 2013
Mexico - New Zealand

2nd Leg: 20 November 2013
New Zealand – Mexico

Looks like its undecided. From what i've heard the game will be in el Azteca when the sun is out (so around noon or 2pm GMT-5 )

weather will be low to mid 70s.

As far as Mexico fielding 2 different squads: hogwash.

Mexico will field their best as the playoffs falls under the FIFA calendar. We only field a team of domestically groomed players when we play games outside FIFA dates because the clubs of our overseas players aren't technically forced to give them up. For example we have a friendly coming up on 10/30 in San Diego. Which will be composed of local players in our league. Most of them won't make the final cut for the playoffs. It has nothing to do with being adapted to the altitude/heat. Plus I don't think you're allowed to switch your roster during the 2 legs (my assumption).

There is no regulation, you can call up as many players as you want, there's no limit, but you have to pay for them all, I dont see any problem with the owners of the teams to arrange such expediture.   I read it on ESPN. that the big money Mexico team plus sponsors, will have 2 camps, Javi Hernandez and the guys from Europe will go straight to NZ with coaching stuff, to aclimate the jet lag and they have similar weather in Europe now, and the America team plus a few more, will face NZ, they will use a club football at home, that it is used to the AZTECA.

What about Charlie Vela and Nery Castillo, will they return, they are both in Spain at Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano?

NZ can beat Mexico, this Mexico, there is blood after the games vs Honduras at home, that they lost confidence, the lost the last 3 out of 4 competitive games, but Herbert needs to copy the way Costa Rica played vs Mexico 2 days ago use the same approach, and play some hard ball when needed, show your teeth.  Rojas and Barbarouses can play, but they have to man up a bit, if NZ plays counterattack the are a good asset. to keep their full-backs preocupied

Thanks. Don't believe everything that you hear. Mexico won't reserve to those silly tactics. Fielding two different sides in under a weeks time would only hurt the integrity of the team. Take the friendly at the end of this month with a grain of salt. It won't be the official team that will be in the playoff. As far as Piojo Herrera taking over the coaching job, its a shocker to me. Its not official.. yet. I hope its just a rumor. But Televisa runs "tings" in the federation and they also own Club America so I wouldn't be surprised to see him take over. He's got the passion Mexico's been lacking lately. I'm sure they're thinking he can motivate the squad. Its a long shot and a gamble. Quite stupid IMO. If they thought he was the right choice they would have gone with him after sacking Chepo. I'm scared he'll play favorites and field a team of players of his current club team America. Which is the last thing that we need.

lmao @ nery castillo. Didn't know he still played football. He hasn't been called up in years. He was a one hit wonder for us in 2007 copa America. Thats about it. We could make a soap opera about Carlos Vela. He was suspended from the national team along with Efrain Juarez back in 2010 for brining hookers to their hotel during a camp. He's denied our callups ever since. A real shame as he's been in top form for Real Sociedad and he brings something to the table that Mexico has been missing. By far our most potentially talented Mexican, but the kid is a mental midget. He keeps avoiding the question as to WHY he's denied callups. Its all speculation. A lot of fans have turned the backs on him. I don't think we'll ever see him play for Mexico again. Hector Moreno, Andres Guardado, Hector Herrera, and Diego Reyes are players that were left off the roster but are expected to come back for the playoffs.

Yes, the 2 camps is solid information, network Televisa and Carlos Slim himself,(Telmex) the richest man on earth, are pushing for 2 camps and a change of manager with Herrera ,from America Fc, in place as mentor and manager.  The need of 2 separate camps is to avoid jet lag, and to have some kind of "time advantage" in preparation, thanks to  Mexico's money  and resources over the new zealanders.  America FC players will be the backbone for the team at home in the 1st leg, if Herrera ,according journalist Juan Ramon Fernandez, a guy that i trusted since the last wc in Southafrica 2010, takes over the nat team.  So a larger squad is around the corner.

Vela and Castillo are unlikely to feature.  The problem with MEXICO FOOTBALL is that too many rich owners of teams talk and decide about football, and that's not their field of expertise.

Televisa is like TVNZ.

They are that powerful, believe me, money, marketing and merchandising is at stake as well not only a sporting event.  If they could they will make you play at 3pm.  150 millons of mexicans, that's a good share of people.  It is understood that Herbert will go the day before game, to Mexico City., well that night at the hotel., there is gonna be a riot, loud music, even the airport security police officers will be tricky, and dont  get surprised if when the team arrives to the Mexico airport, some delay is out there at the Airport to complicate things for the NZ TEAM.   Uruguay did it to the socceroos, ONCE ...then the second time they came first to Bs As, then they went the day before to Montevideo's Centenario stadium

Victor Vucetich, Mexico manager, says ON ESPN that they are already in the WC,  that the worst part went out, and that he is already thinking in the next 5, 6 months to prepare the team for Brazil,   Arrogance and lack of profesionalism at first sight

Do you know Spanish, right? Vos hablás castellano perfectamente, ¿verdad? Pues no parece.

He said "Right now our priority is the game against NZ, then (if we advance) we could have 6 months to get ready".

Again, most of your posts have been just a bunch of bollocks.

No way,!, He Shouldnt, somehow a squad near 25 players at least heading to Los Angeles,  as my mentor Roy Keane, said after Saipan, "fail to prepare, prepare to fail".  I see a mix-up of 5 youngsters at least, and 20 senior players over 25 years old.  Craig Henderson is someone that impressed me in his cameo, very dynamic and eager and he knows the flanks right or left as a midfielder, could play him on one side and brockie on the other side, rojas and wood up front, or wood and fallon up front.

Why would you play Wood wide? Both him and Fallon are out and out central strikers.

I think Ricki would be better with a 3-4-1-2. Considering he is damn well intent on playing a 3-4-3 and the bodies he has, he could play a 2nd DM beside Ivan and play McGlinchy behind Fallon and Wood (if you assume that Smeltz is injured and Rojas wont be used)

I like it,!  but i see brockie for rojas,  fallon is needed for experience of  maybe Smeltz, wood to switch flanks ,in a mobile position floating around, could be a nuissance for the mexican, he is the type of player they dont like, long legs, quick and mobile, check Carlos Costly vs Mexico.

Everyone at the Herald suggested Payne or Vicelich in MF. I can see Vicelich obviously but Payne's missed the last two windows and James impressed in Saudi. He'd probably pick Clapham over Payne I'd say.

Everyone at the Herald suggested Payne or Vicelich in MF. I can see Vicelich obviously but Payne's missed the last two windows and James impressed in Saudi. He'd probably pick Clapham over Payne I'd say.

Won't be 25 Javier. No way. 22 im absolutely positive.

So Who is In from your expertise?

3 keepers?

DF Reid, Durante, Smitth, Tuiloma , Sigmund, bertos, Lochhead

MD Vicellich, MCGlinchey, Keat, Clapham, James, Henderson, Brockie

fw  Fallon, Wood, Barbarouses, Rojas

One player is missing for me if it is 22 since Smeltz Killen are out

Smeltz will b there. 2 keepers

When you look at strikers, with no Killen and Smeltz on the injury comeback, its more than likely going to be Fallon.

Grumpy old bastard alert

F#$k it!! my plane arrives at 6:15pm, that could F#4k up my boys birthday present!!

Any local knowledge that will help us get to the game b4 7:00pm?

What's the traffic like at that time?

It is going to be too tight IMHO...Look at changing flights..for
$50? I would. Realistically it was tigt anyway for a 35000 sell out crowd
but... Bring no bags so u depart airport faster. U will get caught in match
traffic the closer u get to the stadium. Ask driver to ge tu as close as
possible....maybe off Terrace rather than along Quays

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Killen def out. If Smeltz doesnt start it will either be Fallon or Wood partnering Kosta and Marco.
More on Herald suggesting Payne - we and they (journalists) still havent found out if hes even going to be fit (is he even back playing)

He played good at the world cup specially vs Paraguay, vs Italy the italians were falling down once he got the yellow, to get him sent off.  if Herbert plays his 3-4-3  the team will be competitive again because the players are use to it,  I see brockie for Killen and Wood on the flank for smeltz if he doesnt recover well, if smeltz fit, he good play with brockie and wood, and fallon on the bench.

A few months go who would've thought we would've been calling for the return of Fallon. I had a feeling Ricki might do it purely because he scored 'that goal' but I never thought I'd see the day where the forum were putting him there starting line ups to take on Mexico no less.

It's better than putting Bright in there who I think is done

I'd have Brockie in the squad purely because he scores absolute screamers from miles out.
If we're gonna win this realistically our goals are gonna come from set pieces or screamers.
Give Brockie a license to shoot on site and maybe one might find the back of the net.
