Will be my first WC as a serious football fan. So I plan on catching up by watching as much as possible.

exactly the same here. was gutted when i checked my exam timetable.guna just have to mysky it and pray to god nobody mentions the score to me before i watch
You'll know. I always used to notice there were more United/Barca/Inter shirts around Uni after those sides had one in Champions League. Just one mans theory but I find it to be true more often than not

I'm definitely going to watch it live, my exam can piss off. Yea good point teret, there always are more shirts at uni after champions league games but what makes me laugh is when people wear them after their side (usually arsenal I've observed) has lost! haha

I actually find wearing my THFC shirt after a loss is one of the most powerful statements = NOT fairweather.

I have created a shared public Google calendar with every game in the schedule and calendar:

My TV watching strategy...

Fly to Bali for it so that the time zone is 4/5 hours better, I can watch as much as I want, and not have to work the next day, instead lounge by the pool drinking Bintang. Pretty tough really...

f**k this is genius.

I just went through the full match schedule and worked out I'm going to watch 25 of the 48 group matches live. Assuming they have a 6pm match of the day, maybe a couple more. Going to watch all NZ, Spain, England, Brazil, Australia and Germany group games and obviously all the knockout games. It's definitely going to take it's toll on my work.

Have watched every minute of the last 2 world cups when it was on (i.e. every game live except for the last round of group games - watched a live game followed by the full replay of the other game straight away).  Couldn't do it for 1998 as not all games were shown (yes, I still hold a grudge against TV1 for that).

I actually thought more people would do this, but obviously got that wrong!

Not going to be the case this time as I'll be in South Africa, so I'm trying to figure out how to record them all while I'm away!  (I've been told I can't get the games off MySKY onto a DVD, so that is no good for me)

Somebody please tell me that SKY TV is broadcasting ALL the games? All I can find is TVNZ site banging on about a 22 live games. Also a 2008 press release saying SKY and TVNZ got live rights. SKY site is rather quiet about the Cup. Hopefully my Googling and net searching skills are gash and somebody more in-the-know will soon set me straight.

God I only just realised how crap the pool coverage will be on TVNZ

They claim 22 live games, which includes 6/8 round of 16 matches, and every game after that live. That's 14 of the knock-out stage matches, 3 All White pool matches, leaving only 5 other pool games screened live!!!!

They did last time -SS3 was initially set up for the overflow if I remember rightly - so I don't see why they wouldn't this time.

On their website, Sky say:
What is SKY's coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup going to be like?   Answer   At this time we will be getting All matches LIVE and in HD but just like any LIVE event our programme and schedule are subject to change so please continue to check the EPG (electronic programming guide) to confirm any changes and updates. Be sure to check the June SKY Watch when it is due out for more information.

I considered getting SKY for whatever minimum term they have but it worked out to be about $600 for the minimum 12 month term for the basic package alone, and then $18 per month or so for SKY Sport.

So minimum outlay of at least $650 or so if you are installing specifically for the cup. Didn't help that they just put the prices up.

Ouch!

Here in Canada all games are on the CBC which is like TVNZ. Which i find interesting. The only issue being the final group games which are shared with Bold.
Games start at 7.30am and finish around 4.30pm. The joys of not working.Breakfast and football and lunch and football.

I saw briefly on the telly mention of 'dual commentary'.  Anyone know exactly what this means?  Blocking out De Jong and co I guess and hope.

Interesting. I hope it means more than one commentator on the Sky coverage. For the Confederations Cup and the various youth WCs, Sky had one guy on his own. His voice sounds familiar and he's English, so I'm guessing he's a reject from Sky UK or ITV or BBC. On his own, he just rambled off into talking bollocks. I'd rather he was dropped and a decent commentator was brought in, but if he's retained then giving him someone to talk to would make a huge difference to the quality.

I'll know tomorrow just how many games i can watch. Getting a recheck on my injury i suffered on Sat, looks like it's probably fractured which would mean 6 weeks out. Not bad timing.

Three for me, and two for them.

I can't imagine I will see too many of the 2am games!

I will probably start a new job in July so perfect timing!

I am in Hong Kong and don't have a TV, however broadband is with unlimited bandwidth. I have therefore invested in a VPN which allows me to log into a UK gateway, and I can watch games live or can download later from the BBC and ITV. I am guessing I am unique!

Last WC my folks were in Italy + my exams finished the first day (admittedly it was 3 exams in 2 days but whatever). Only game I missed was Brazil-France because I got too drunk and they don't show games on the train.

This time around I'm currently studying postgrad so I have no deadlines, only problem is I've got a really cheap option to go the the States so for one day I'll miss out. Otherwise all games are golden. Hopefully the new sh*tty Australian time zone will pan out.

just got this reply from a mate of mine (whose main sporting claim to fame imo - is that he was at the Bernebau when Ole put the ball in the German's net)

i was yakking about how i was a bit worried about work clashes with WC this year and how it was tougher than before

he replied >> can't comment on subsequent years but can't help feeling that you are kidding yourself if your rose-tinted, 20 / 20 hindsight glasses now have you believing that you managed any sort of work / WC (life) balance in '82. My recollection of your attitude then is more along the lines of ''go ahead....make my day...fire me''. <<

this is probably the first time I won't be able to watch every single game of either the World Cup or Euro, but have take some leave from work and will watch every 1130pm and 630am game and hopefully will be able to watch the replay of the 2am games before going to bed early.

I'm heading over to the UK for the WC so I can watch the matches at a reasonable hour and where the conversations down the pub probably won't  include mentioning Andy Haden .. phoenix rising2010-05-30 22:38:29
