Dewhurst (I think it is) is a more than adequate commentator.  Beats most of the aussies and de Jong easily.

Our goalie did look quite good (and what a boot he had on him!) but he did worry me with that one attempt when the ball came to him so slowly it was almost going backwards and it nearly crept through his legs.

Two questions that remain unanswered:
1.) Was Cain wearing a dress?
2.) Were were playing on painted sand?

Turkey are 4-1 up over Costa Rica in the 75 min. 66% possession to Turkey.

Going to be tough for us to get a win against Turkey, looks like they are the team to beat in our group. Hopefully they might take their foot off the peddle against us, being they have already secured top spot.

If we build it, they will come...

those pitches certainly have something a bit wierd going on

The pitches are the same as the one at North harbour and our boys have been training on it for 6 months or more now. Its not a bad surface to play on, the best artificial pitch around from what I understand but one big down side is that there are black rubber pellets in among the fake grass and these radiate heat so that even in 20 degree heat a players feet get very hot as well as the rest of them.

Turkey result is a good one for us in that it means even a draw might possibly be enough to get through. Turkey might rest some players and the CR v BF game will be all or nothing. I would think BF will win that one

Theres an artificial pitch about 5 minutes from where I live. Amazing to play on.

Would say the Aussie commentators are much better than Dehurst. Dehurst knows his stuff but he never stops talking - reminds me of a horse race commentator. He also tends to be a bit negative.

So if it ends goaless with BF and CR then we could go through with a 1 - 0 loss against Turkey?

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
Goalless draw BF vs. CR and 0-1 vs. Turkey means we place 2nd above BF by virtue of greater number of goals (GD equal).

Interestingly 1-1 draw between BF vs. CR and then 0-1 vs. Turkey puts us in a complete dead heat with BF. Then:
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria,
their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between
the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the
teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the
teams concerned;
g) fair play point system in which the number of yellow and red cards
are evaluated;
h) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

We would be tied right down the G and H
The bad news for NZ is that we CAN NOT qualify as one of the "4 best 3rd placed teams" with any loss to Turkey.

Groups B, C, E, and F already have 3rd placed teams with 3 points so the minimum requirement for a chance at these final places is already set at 3 points.

Really grasping at straws here but we need every bit of hope we have available against a rampant Turkey.

We currently have 2 Yellow cards while BF have 5. This is according to the FIFA website stats for the teams.

But really we need to just do the best we can and not leak goals. Both games being played simultaneously so we won't know where we stand before the game.

P.S. Why isn't this game live on SKY?

Do players with two yellow cards in the first two matches get suspended for their third match?

If so turkey will be without 3 of their starting lineup.
two defenders have received 2 yellows.
and one player got two yellows in the costa game which thus  produced a red,  is he out too  for the nz game?

Vs BF

vs costa r

I believe this is correct including Zane Sole for us who picked up a yellow card in both games.

Geez this "FIFA Fair Play" system is complicated and convoluted! It's not just about the number of yellow/red cards after all!

It also gives you (positive) points for positive (eg. attacking) play, and "respect" towards opponents and match officials.

It covers FOUR pages of the tournament regulations, but I can't find a single thing about how suspensions work (to answer/not answer your question Chris)!!

The commentator mentioned when Sole got his 2nd yellow that he would be out for the next game, so 3 of there players will be out too. Anyway hopefully having already qualified, Turkey will play there 2nd string team so we will have a chance to go through and I am proved to be wrong on the results and NZ hopefully have not used all there get out of jail cards yet.

BF seemed to play quite aggresively which would hopefully mean they will have a higher card count should things depend on G.

NZ will have to play their boots off whatever happens.

Slightly off subject....but,
I guess some of those boys are going to be picked to make up the numbers for the junior phoenix if/when they get their reserve team up and running.
Can only be good for those youngsters to get some semi pro action.

can't believe that guy Spragg is only 16....he's got some talent. Last year watched him play for the Phoenix as a guest in a friendly on Newtown no2. looked OK and must have been only 15.

There are some good youngsters coming through in NZ. In 5 or 10 years we might see the Phoenix nearly all kiwis.

Half time, still down 1 nil

cant find a feed anywhere

FIFA have a live feed, but we arent a country that receives it

BF 2 - 0 up against CR
Permalink Permalink

Why the hell aren't we a country that can watch the feed when our team is involved?

And didn't I hear that some people watched Game 2 via this very feed?

Ahmad, we've never been able to receive a stream from FIFA, I'm pretty sure we couldn't get the stream for the Women's WC here. timmymadden2009-11-01 08:37:02

Ok it was just that during the first game someone complained that their FIFA stream went down?

Edit: actually they were just referring to a "live stream" which stated something. So probably just a live update and I misunderstood. Thanks.

im pretty sure theyve qualified as one of the four best 3rd placed sides! legendary effort.

Brazil and netherlands also finished 3rd on 3 points but have a negative goal difference (ours is neutral), so we sneak in!

According to FIFA news we have qualified. There were 5 teams on 3 points and 1 on 4 points. Out of the 5 teams on 3 points, 2 (including Brazil) had a GD of -1, while 3 (including NZ) had a GD of 0. So those three join the team on 4 points to advance.

Highlights now on FIFA site - I'm about to go watch (apparently we had some REAL opportunities and failed to finish during the game).

For the record what prevented SKY from showing this Live? SS1 had Golf on, I don't know what SS2 had. SS2 is now showing a replay, while SS1 is showing the (yawn) rugby from last night.

Anyone else having problems with the highlights not loading? I can't get any game/highlight to load.

Just watched the golf-delayed replay...nice Sky.
Unbelievable!! Well done NZ U17s!
I am afraid that at 90 +1 I had given up on them.Thank goodness Jack Hobson-McVeigh wasn't paying attention to that negative rubbish.
You little champion!
First NZ team ever to qualify for a FIFA tournament second round.Just 2 weeks out from our Mens WCQ.
That's a great start to the NZ Football Fortnight.

Excellent never say die attitude and great commitment from Murie to keep playing despite injury.

Now for some study.

I have to admit that I had given up by the 80th minute (I thought we NEEDED to win).

Anyone know where else I can view the highlights online? Fifa site won't work for me (just loads an advert and then advances to the next video loading another advert constantly).

And the compulsory man love:
