"Herbert was the centre of attention at LAX and despite not being scheduled to be interviewed, he had no choice as 10 Mexican and American journalists stopped him and fired questions while the New Zealand and Australian-based players snuck past unmolested."

RIP Rickis innocence. Glad the rest of the crew made it through. Stay safe AW

Gosh!  thats terrible news. Must be that "prepare your anus " stuff that seems so popular with Mexicans. I hope he is going to be OK. Might be a bit tricky sitting on the bench for a while.

Don't forget 9am NZ = 7am Melbourne

If your accommodation doesn't have broadband, find a cafe that offers free wifi (many do) and watch via a free stream.

blah blah blah check this out, best players from Ecuador and Colombia are not from altitude, even tough they play their home games in the Q,  at Quito or Bogota, to use the altitude factor, blah blah blah

Colombia plays its home matches in Barranquilla, for the humity and heat, not for the altitude (while Bogota is a high city, Barranquilla is at sea level).

It's all Hungarian officials for Thursday (hey, hey!!!! the ref is the same as first leg vs. Bahrain 2009 !!!! Good omen / deja-vu or what?):

CNN (México) - "FIFA referee Hungarian Viktor Kassai elected to lead the first leg of the playoff between teams from Mexico and New Zealand to be held on November 13 at the Estadio Azteca, unveiled the Mexican Football Federation (Femexfut) Friday.

Kassai will his fellow assistants Gabor Eros and Gyorgy Ring, while István Vad, also Hungarian, will be the fourth official, Femexfut reported in a statement."

The same group of Hungarian officials who presided over the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final Barcelona v Manchester United.

Info on ref Kassai - a high-profile ref who was in charge of the UEFA Champions League Final 2011, games at World Cup South Africa 2010 etc.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Kassai

Hey, hey !!! He presided over Mexico's loss to Uruguay World Cup 2010 - let's hope every time he refs, Mexico loses !!!!

and refereed the semi-final Spain v Germany

Another good omen for us - the last time he refereed a qualification play-off for a major tournament was Estonia v Rep. of Ireland 2011 - a play-off for Euro 2012: and the home side conceded four goals and had two players sent off !!!

He refereed Spain v Italy and England v Ukraine at Euro 2012.

UEFA Champions League Final May 2011 Barcelona v Manchester United

UEFA Champions League 2012-2013 semi-final Bayern Munich v Barcelona April 2013 first leg

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Wellington leg will be refereed by the notorious "phantom goal referee"  Felix Brych who attracted worldwide attention after allowing the "goal that never was" in the Bundesliga a couple of weeks ago:

http://www.sandiegored.com/noticias/45526/Phantom-goal-referee-to-officiate-New-Zealand-vs-Mexico/

That "phantom goal" Brych allowed that clearly never was Leverkusen v Hoffenheim:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3CLrTOcDa0

As long as he allows us a dodgy goal or two, bring it on !!!!

He's dished out a few reds in recent World Cup qualifiers:

WC Qualifiers Europe 2012/2013 - Appearances as Referee
Spain - France 1:1 Yellows = 3 - -
06/09/2013 Serbia - Croatia 1:1 Yellows = 6 1 Reds =  1
11/10/2013 Armenia - Bulgaria 2:1 Yellows = 3 1 Reds = 1

Brych refereed the uncontroversial first leg of the Ireland v France play-off for World cup 2010 on 14/11/09

(It was after the second leg Thierry Henry admitted to handling the ball into the net but Brych wasn't the ref for that game).

The Mexican national team, who aspires to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil, today thrashed Lobos BUAP (Wolves) of the Second Division 4-0 in the last friendly before meeting set on Wednesday to New Zealand.

Rafael Marquez scored two goals, Miguel Layún and Jesus Molina, one each, to give victory to the "tri" in a meeting in which coach Miguel Herrera sought concentrated on the operation of your computer.

Mexico started the game with Moises Munoz in goal, Rafael Marquez, Francisco Javier Rodriguez and Juan Carlos Valenzuela, as central, Paul Aguilar, of the right and Layún, on the left. Juan Carlos Medium and Carlos Pena were the defenses, Luis Montes worked in the front wheel and were Oribe Peralta and Aldo de Nigris.

Herrera made changes and the end of the meeting admitted that alignment has almost decided to play next Wednesday against New Zealand and doubts are if Munoz keeps the door or put to Jose de Jesus Corona, and if left to De Nigris as a couple Peralta or places Raul Jimenez.

The meeting took place behind closed doors until the end was allowed access to media.

The selection easily breached lag behind Buap Lobos, who had on the court striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco, one of the best team players from 1998 to 2010, who was sent to reclaim the decisions of the arbitrators.

Herrera will work until Tuesday at the tactical approach to face the New Zealanders, who are characterized by their strength and good in the air.

Dont know id be happy about having a card happy referee.

If there is a red card it is infinitely more likely to be a New Zealand player

And considering how many players on yellow we have, its abt of a risk.

3 of our back 5 are in yellow card jepordy... kind makes the selection of Butler a DM to replace a back even more puzzling should we pick up a few cards, you know, besides the fact he's pants.

I was wondering about this - can we add to the squad after the first leg if it's"injury replacement"? Was thinking maybe Ricki is figuring that Boxall can slot in in Wellington if need be and he'll be nice and fresh because he hasn't just been to Mexico and back

Are you suggesting that if one of our players gets a yellow and is ruled out he should feign injury and open up the possibility of a replacement being called in?

Any odds from the overseas agencies?   Tab seems to be stingy on  the all whites, surly we should be at 25-30 to win at azteca an 25-1 to qualify.

Quick look at overseas betting agencies, and  a 3-0 victory to Mexico seems to be he shortest odds,  they are

expecting three or more goals in the game.
