Great news.
If anyone is planning on going, bear in mind that the football competition is not just in Beijing but is being played in other cities as well. The draw is only being made on April 20 so nobody will know what city the Oly-whites will be playing in until then.
If it is in the Beijing group the bad news is that hotel rates are already five times higher than normal rates, and apartment owners are renting out for the month of August at ten times normal rental rates.
If drawn in a group playing in Shanghai, Tianjin, Qinghuangdao or Shenyang, hotel prices will be a bit higher than normal but not by much (especially in Shanghai where it shouldn't make much difference). Air NZ flies directly to Shanghai and will to Beijing by August, to get to Tianjin or Shenyang there are flights from Hong Kong.
You can check out normal rates on www.hoteltravel.com or www.asiarooms.com however bear in mind that they may be the usual rates, and after submitting a booking you might get an email back saying "sorry the room is not available at that rate due to a major event".

FTFY
I'm seriously reconsidering my boycott of watching these particular Olympics, if only for the football, and even then only for matches where NZ and Australia are involved.

FANTASTIC NEWS!!!!!!!!

Can't wait for August!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO THE OLY-WHITES!

So who are the 3 overage players going to be. For mine it should be Smetlz/Killen, Elliot and Nelsen. It's UK off season so Chris, Ryan and Simon should be able to go. The Nix will miss Smeltzy though.
Its no longer a problem.

I thought it was the first part of the actual season ?
Assume Pelter and James become available as well...

True, I had my calender out by a month. Thought the Olympics were July but their August. Doh!

I see the Royal NZ Herald's disdain for the beautiful game continues...
Headline: "Flak likely over Olympics decision." (unauthored of course)
From whom I wonder? Dylan Cleaver? Rugby heads who feel uncomfortably threatened by another sport? f**ked if I know.

What a load of rubbish! its a great decision. The WORST thing that can happen is they lose all their games and a few players get noticed and get signed overseas.
We send so many people to the olympics that have no chance of getting a medal.
They qualified so they are in. good on them.
Hope they bring in Neilson, Killen and Smeltz

http://tvnz.co.nz/. FFS. Wendy Petrie: "The World's so-called greatest game." Tart. James Dolphin? Clueless.

re Petrie - vietch would probably have been even more sneering (though he has improved slightly of late)
tigers2008-03-28 21:29:24
what tv 1 clearly doesn't understand (small minded and ignorant as they are) is that football is the only sport that stands a chance of being called the "World's Greatest" -
but because TVNZ believes the world ends at the Bombay Hills they really just end up coming across like a bunch of ten year olds - "my dad plays rugby -so everyone in the world must plays rugby" - tragic really
re Dolphin - blow it out your other hole sunshine
wtf - "puff pant I'm speechless" - no mate you're just thick: there are words in English which might allow you to vent your frustration but you just don't know them, either that or you're a bit puffed
but just possibly Mr dolphin you are as clever as your aquatic namesakes are supposed to be, and realise that a team sport can develop over a four year period in a way that a track athlete of your age probably won't and therefore realise it's futile to mount a counter-arguement
I'm going with thick or or puffed

Congratulations guys and girls, hopefully you can both make the second round.
(On a sader not I have the feeling that this might be it for Int. footie for a while

Bloody hell stevo... I think you've set a record for the largest signature on the forums. And the campest!

Andrew Gourdie's alright.
true, Gourdie's done some good stuff on the Nix, in general TV 3 seem to 'sign better players' and have a much better attitude towards football

What did this Dolphin bloke do again?
Three for me, and two for them.
he made the mistake of saying "I'm speechless"
which he might have got away with had Stevo not valiantly jumped to save the honour of NZ football
his comment was in response to both NZ football teams going to the Olympics
not quite a hanging offence but Stevo is a vigilant soldier and I'm always happy to get the horses out ready to harness them to the bandwagon

Telfer just had a discussion with Gordon Irving about the Football Ferns going to the olympics and fielded a few calls. From about 9.20am to 10am.

Yes I heard it, and I don't understand telfer's point of view. Sounds like he thinks they shouldn't be there because they didn't reach the same qualification standards as athletes who have to not only meet olympic times but also NZ standard times which are more demanding.
The problem is that criteria for the football is being able to finish in the top half of the field, which is entirely subjective as apposed to an actual numerical target.
The team has done everything that they can to qualify. How can they prove they will finish in the top half? Beat PNG 10-0?? Football isn't like that.

Remember dude, always take Telfer with a pinch of sh*t. He knows absolutely jack about football.
FFS.
Listening to it now. He's just playing the intellectual "I'll argue that an orange is an apple" twerp card. Pathetic really. Stick to f**king netball Telfer.
"This is the other thing about soccer"...He almost spat that out...
"The Round ball game"...FFS.
I gave up. Telfer's voice. Oh that f**king scornful smarmy voice...
