  • Was at the helm of the success of the Phoenix.
  • Took them to one game of the final.
  • Created a fortress at the Caketin.
  • He and his national team of slowly improved how NZ play football.
  • Have gotten serious quality opposition to play against
  • 1 year after taking over, wins NZ's first game in Europe.
  • Qualified for Confeds Cup
  • Secures World Cup play-off
  • Defeated another top European team
  • And finally 2 draws in 2 games at the World Cup.

So - just as much as the World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for players to secure contracts, the same goes for coaches.

Some might say he's the savious of NZ football - but the guy can't stay in NZ with results like that. Where will he go? Who will replace him? Can he be replaced?

His kids are in last year of school. So leaving wouldn't have as massive impact on them as it might have 4 years ago.

get Peter Jackson to offer his kids roles in the hobbit movie - then they'd stay

England would be a bit of a step down the way they're going at the moment.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Wouldn't that be a step down? And I say that as a fan of a League One club. I could see him leaving us for a Championship club.

Doubt if he would go to a lower league UK club except maybe as an assistant. He has no European coaching experiance so that might count against him for a top job. Maybe he could pick up a job and some big $$$ coaching ion the middle east.

I'm reminded of what a brilliant job that John Adshead did in 1982 ..... what happened to his career after the World Cup?

Probably just top himself while he is on top.

i think he came off second best in a clash of egos with the administrators (I'm not privy to the details -and it was a long time ago, so take that with as big a pinch of salt as you wish)

i expect Ricki would do well to manage his side of any such issue - as for Glading ...???

Socceroos indeed. Headline in today's Age here in Melbourne was FRESH HERB COULD SPICE UP SOCCEROOS.

Hey, why not? We're all Australasians aren't we, besides they could get Ricki for a fraction of the cost of  Verbeek and FFA could make a killing on its own line of official Oz Retro Rickis.

While we're at it the Age today was totally bizarre. Not only did it feature a front page article on a NZ sports team for the first time I can remember, but also a full double page spread in the sports section, not to mention a large photo of Ricki on the front of the World Cup lift-out with a sideline that read "What chance him being asked to coach the Socceroos?: SWEET FFA".

Strange times we live in.

You misremember. The brilliant job was the Adshead/Fallon team. All the evidence suggests that Adshead gave the inspiring team talks while Fallon made everyone super-fit. When Adshead coached the team on his own it was a fail, and I think Fallon on his own was even worse. (Apparently it was Fallon's inability to control his temper which led to Richard Wilson being bounced from the actual WC games after playing all the qualifiers... class act, Kevin.)

Wouldn't Herbert shifting (defecting) to the Socceroos be up there with Russell Coutts shifting to Alinghi & leading them against us - the whole county felt shaftedstealthkiwi2010-06-23 10:50:19

But noone cares about yachting, and if Herbert coached the roos we could really stick it to those aussies saying they need a kiwi coach to perform.  I'd rather he stayed obviously, perhaps some of NZF's world cup qualifying bonus could go towards upping Ricki's salary somewhat.

ahh forgetting about what code it is isn't it more important that we currently are doing well and one of the lynchpins of that success might switch to help someone else do better than us. it's basic human nature that we feel slighted and betrayed if someone once on our side then helps someone else beat us

& if no one cares about yachting then why did Coutts have to get security in for his family and be be slated in all the media for weeks for supposedly betraying his country people actually bayed for him to be deported lol

If we set up  meaningful international programme that generated a decent income, we could afford to pay RH a decent salary. If done right and with the right opposition, all of our  best players available - we could do something. In the meantime use some of the WC $$ to pay him properly

Money talks in professional sport, and so it's going to be an agonizing decision for Ricki. Interesting times ahead.

If he gets head-hunted for a bigger job, then he certainly deserves it. Would be might sad to see him go offshore tho'
