I'm a bad Kiwi, I look forward to the All Blacks losing, honest. In fact, I bloody love it when they lose.

TV1 has a man on the ground (their Euro correspondent) and they have done a much better job of covering the AWs in Austria.
TV3 form has slipped. Gourdie seems to be AWOL at the moment.
Pretty ridiculous there is only 1 NZ journalist with the AWs (and he is not even a sports journo!)

Not that AWOL, he was in Melbourne on Monday and loving Barbeque on Twitter this morning.

this from an email from a kiwi generic sports fan mate of mine has helped me put things a little in perspective

Can someone please answer the mystery.

The TV1 correspondent (look back on the TV1 piece if you have access) towards the end of the piece is talking to the camera about the All Whites winning but in the background you can see the pitch with a team of players wearing black vs a team wearing white (IIRC). Looked like AWs vs. Serbia.

Did he record that piece during the dying stages of the game before he had won? Didn't look like a green screen and surely they didn't need a green screen to record that segment anyway?

Yup, think he recorded it while game was still going. Presumably he records another story if the unthinkable happens in the last couple of minutes.

When I saw that I was thinking about what was on the cutting room floor from the Australian game....

There was a cricket game (Chappell Hadlee) a few years ago when we reduced Australia to something like 80/6 and blardy Michael Hussey pulled a miraculous win out of the bag.

I was on holiday at the time and in a rural district that receives The Press out of Christchurch.

Lead story in the sports news was "New Zealand beats Australia in Chappell Hadlee match". Full of LOLs and I really wish I had kept that paper but I think I was too sad from watching the game the previous night to think to keep it.

I believe they reprinted the paper and stopped what they could going into the city but rural areas must have got the first runs LOL.

No, lead the sports news and was in the main bulletin as well. Made a bit of a thing about it being the big sports story of the day and pushing the AB selection into 2nd place. In fact had 2 bits in the sports news, last piece was in the dressing sheds. You can't really complain.

The story was the AW's, but the sports news started with ' to the AB announcement in a minute'.

Not wrong.

Hard News - they didn't say it like that at all.

I forget the wording but it was a jibe at the All Blacks taking second fiddle to another team in black - that's a bit different to saying that the AB team announcement will be coming up shortly and then leading with something else.

Pedantic but important.

No, that is what they said in the preview before the ad break.  The actual sports bulletin started as I said.

Pedantic, but important.

Tuned in to SBS today to see what Craig Foster et al had to say about the game. They all had their best lemon-sucking faces on and gave not a shred of credit to the AWs, merely mumbled something about how Serbia were "only playing at 70%" and were "trying to avoid injuries". This before introducing a duo of alleged comedians whose feeble football schtick inevitably included a crack at NZ. It was so contemptuous I found it oddly amusing.

Thank god for stuff.com and its excellent coverage.

You could almost argue that by saying 'All Black team in a minute' that they're actually saying 'wait a minute because we have a far more important story first'
Listen here All Blacks fans, you're going to wait your turn because this is more important. That is in fact the statement they are making, I think by not pointing out their position in the que, the average rugby head would have missed the fact that they are not the most important piece of sports news.

Plus, for those of us who had to watch in a room full of Rugby heads, it ensured I got to watch uninterrupted without the chorus of meat heads groaning 'how come the Rugby isn't on'
Smart play I thought as I enjoyed watching the report of our moment of triumph uninterrupted.

Foster, his Aussie media chums and the few bad eggs I met in Melbourne (to be fair most of the occers I met were alright actually) have me really hoping we can get more points in our pool then they can in theirs

I don't mind them losing every game this year, I'm all about the All Whites! I would like the All Blacks to win next year so we can get over the Rugby "World" cup.

This. And to hell with the Aussie haters, most are fully supportive of us, the small remainder are just bummed we showed them up in Melbourne last week. I'm still hoping the Aussies do well, although I do wish Grella all the worst!

I watched SBS on Sunday Stop Out & didn't come away with that impression at all, far from it.

With regard to having an enemy of the game to contend with just read this article:

Don't be so bloody pedantic. By your reasoning it was 3rd on, the first was 'sports news', the second the comment about the ABs and then the AW's. It just goes to show that people will put their own slant on things to fit in with their own prejudices.

I was listening to Radiosport first thing on Sunday morning to hear them talking up the All Whites but instead it was the "farming hour." Since when was looking after a horse sport? Then they followed it up by discussing who might be in the All Blacks. I only watched TV3 sportnews but didnt it only mention the AW then show footage of the All Black story? then went to Super14 final, sevens coverage and then finally the AW vs Serbia game. Or was there more on the AW at the start of the news?

I know many of you are anti The Dom Post for it's Terry chasing but it makes me kind of happy to see our local paper have a Monday issue with a AW story on the front page, one on the back page and the entire front page of the sports section devoted to football

wasn't impressed with the Herald coverage. The headline should have been All Whites beat World Cup Contenders or All Whites Down 15th ranked Serbia...or something to put it in perspective. Smetlz Strike Stuns Serbia, All Whites claim their greatest scalp...something like that...

The link from the front page was a pass mark, but the sports coverage was a fail.

Crowd Goes Wild dropped the ball. Led with Indy, then F1, then some tennis, before the All Whites. I mean come on! I know it's a day later, but it is a bigger deal in New Zealand than all those previous stories.

Oh well. Before the rugby atleast!

We don't need the media anyway. We know its a big deal!

TV1 led with the AWs and followed them into Austria to watch the Japan v England Match. Good coverage. TV3 had just the Japan England Match.

I dont think they do stories by order of importance on that show.

The news however tends to lead with a story, then do half the sports news on it,before briefly mentioning others. So it tends to matter.

Tegel is right, CGW are all over the place. I wasn't surprised they didn't mention All Whites first, just how they roll.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

You reckon? Sure, it is a comedy show, but most often the lead story is the biggest of the day, or on Mondays it is the biggest of the weekend. I would have expected it to have been the Serbia win, rather than the motorsport and tennis, but sure, it is after all a comedy show.

As far as the news is concerned, I think the content is better for the All Whites than it was for the Nix a couple of months back. I felt there was little analyse of what happened on the field, rather more about the supporters and the hype around the games.

It would have been hard for them to add a new angle 36 hours after the result.  It's hard enough for Gourdie to get items on TV3 the next (Monday) night if a Phoenix game was being played at the same time as the Sunday evening news.

Ok, who has been writing to the Herald?

"Controversy rages. A constant email stream arrives at the Herald, expressing everything from frustration to outrage that this newspaper refers to the beautiful game as soccer rather than football.

This is not a matter up to writers and reporters.

The word soccer has been set as the Herald's style, to distinguish the game from other football codes.

People in high Herald  places say the newspaper will not buckle."

Are there other football codes?
