I would like to see if Mulligan could do an ok job in Browns place. possibly a chance against serbia.

I think if Mulligan is ever going to get a look in its now. He'll be champing at the bit i imagine to get a run.

I'm not sure Ricki will want to start with McG in the middle. Its possible Reid will get a start there aswell. Either way, he has to look at options now, no choice.

I imagine people will be given a half each to impress playing alongside Elliott, who prior to this game i though might be at risk with Brown a dead cert before now becoming irreplaceable.

Can we nip this in the bud now.  Reid is not, and has never has been, a midfielder.

Barron is the obvios choice for Brown's spot IMO, although Mulligan and Christie can push for it.
You know we belong together...

Hate to say it but i thought Barron was crap.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

When? He didn't play last night.

He was terrible when warming up behind the goal though Simon.

Three for me, and two for them.

Here in lies the problem for the AW's....wafer thin depth in some areas. Brown will probably be out and who is lining up to take his position. Barron, an amateur player from local NZF league or Phoenix rejects Mulligan and Christie. Does not exactly fill you with confidence. Defensive midfield is such a vital area.....we will come under huge pressure there in the WC. It is not a place for part timers or amatuers.....but looks like we have no choice.

I would like to see this..

                      Paston

            Reid     Nelsen   Vicelich

                  Elliott    Mulligan
Bertos            Clapham              Smith

                  Wood    Fallon

2 dm who can pass and a cm who I'm dying to see

Smith as a wingback, jeez that was a good cross...and jeez his mugshot is misleading, he is actually quite a solid looking bugger.

Wood with Fallon has some serious potential.

How you can leave Killen out is beyond me.  Did fairly well last night and in the second leg vs Bahrain he was outstanding.
Permalink Permalink

You don't need Wood and Fallon, and definitely not at Killen's expense.  He's the guy that will get the goal if one of the big lads clears the high ball into some space, and he can clean up in the box too.

I also very, very much doubt we'll see any of Clapham.

I know but we need to work other combinations aswell. these games are about seeing players working well together. we know Killen is going to start everygame in SA, and I want him too, I just want to see a few other players get some serious time before the WC. Just so we know who can/can't play where with who etc come Slovakia.

We have 2 more games to try things, so why not try to change things up.

sorry I didn't mention above is a formation to try against Serbia, not my prefered starting 11.

Clapham is 23 out of 23 in that squad.  He's not going to get a second of football in Sth Africa.  The players who should be geeting time are those just outside of the first 11, i.e. Barron, Wood, Smith, Reid,  and Mulligan.  Clapham is there for experience, he's probably trained three or four times with the All Whites, there is nothig to be gained by starting him in one fof our two warm up matches.

The focus has to be on preparing a team for the match against Slovakia, the first 11 still needs to play together as much as possible, they've basically only played 5 matches together - Jordan, Bahrain x 2, Mexico, Aussie.  That is nothing, it takes years to mould a team, we're trying to do it in 6 months.  Focus on the first 11, not on trying to develop alternatives.  We don't have enough time to do that

I think that the biggest concern is that in those 5 matches (well not Jordan because I didn't see that) Shane Smeltz, who is probably our most natural finisher, has looked all at sea.  The formation doesn't suit him and I don't think that we should persist with him in the next match.  Obviously that's going to be tough on him but we'd be better off attempting something a little different up there, either using Leo as a third forward wide right or wood nominally on the left.

BBS - yep it's never going to be a like for like swap.  Another option is a 4-4-2 with a solid back 4 that doesn't really push forward (so maybe smith and Reid out wide), inside out wingers (Leo on the left and maybe Brockie or McGon the right) cutting in and getting into the space behind the strikers and two defensively minded  midfielders, Elliot and Brown.  It's very compact and I can see it playing to our strengths.  Smeltz would then be an important option off the bench

give the man 30 min against serbia, slovenia or chile. sink or swim, hes good enough or hes not. we mac has been quiet of late, could be a good wakeup for him. He would have been no worse than boyens replacing leo.  I like your 442 lineup though

Yep, I agree.  I'd like to see him get a chance with just one of Killen/Fallon as well.

With the loss of brown it will be very interesting if Ricki decides to stick with his favoured formation or not.

Peverley in yes?

Peverly is on the way to SA to train with the squad until Brown is confirmed either way.

I know I'm a bit late, but I've been having log in issues for the last few weeks. However, I thought I'd weigh in on a couple of the debates going on here.

Goalies - Moss has to go. I know there's the "What if we lose Paston and Bannatyne before the end of the Italy game?" point of view, but what if we don't? What happens if Paston gets injured later in the knockout stages? Imagine facing Brazil in a quarterfinal of final with Bannatyne or Gleeson or Spoonley in goal while Moss sits at home watching on TV.
That would be as ridiculous as say, going on holiday without appealing a key player's 4 match suspension.

Nationality/Eligibility. While I also have some reservations about the nature of Reid's switch (and Daniel's too), I agree with view that the decisions of the likes of Reid and Smith wouldn't have been taken lightly. Once you choose your senior team, you're stuck. Just ask Ryan Giggs.

I personally have no qualms about players playing at youth level for different countries. After all, was Reid being looked at by NZ at U-15, U-17 etc? He was eligible, the Danes were looking at him, and he naturally wanted to play at the highest possible level.  On the other hand, I think there should be a limit, somewhere in the U-19 - U-23 range, where your choice becomes set. By then you're an adult, and mature enough to make a final choice.

There were some well made points about the global nature of our society. Shane Smeltz born in Germany, has American and NZ parents and was brought up in Australia. But he played one (senior) season in NZ before becoming an All White.
My son was born in Korea with parents from Thailand and NZ. Is he Korean? They wouldn't even give him a birth certificate. A New Zealander? He's been granted citizenship "by descent", which means he can't pass it on to his kids unless he upgrades citizenship in the future, or they're born in NZ. A Thai? Officially, no problem, but  he will commonly be referred to in Thai as a"half-child". Assuming he plays football, and is good enough, who does he play for? At youth level wherever he resides and is eligible for. At senior level, it will be his choice (which will be NZ, or I'll disown him)

There do need to be regulations to prevent mercenary players roaming the globe searching for a national team who will take them, but if a player is eligible for many teams through ancestry or long term residence, then I don't have a problem with the choices Reid, Smith, Smeltz or McGlinchey. They know they've shut the door on Denmark, England, Australia, and Scotland.
This isn't just one World Cup, it's their international careers.

We are desperately short of depth in our squad. I believe Ricki would have gone away hoping that injuries meant that he would not need to go beyond a core of 15 players, because that is all he has got: the starting 11 vs Australia plus Wood, McGlinchey, Reid and Smith. The others are way off the pace at World Cup level - they are there as injury cover and becuase FIFA pays for 23.

So, the most likely cover for Brown should he not make it back for the World Cup - Vicelich in front of the back three partnering Elliott, or McGlinchey and Elliott if Ricki wants to me more attacking - perhaps as a change in the second half.

For those people mulling over the decisions made recently by Reid, Smith, Fallon, McGlinchey etc., an interesting article to put in perspective the complex nature of national boundaries and qualification for countries in our global village!!

Ricky was just on Sky TV Europe's pre-World Cup round up. They reported on Chris Killen missing Serbia to get married. He said 'well, we haven't been to the World Cup for such a long time we're not gonna waste it.'
