what would be your top All whites line up?

Considering that Mulligan hasn't been having much luck at the Phoenix.. and assuming Daniel is eligable some time this year.

The below looks like a strong team to me.. what you think?

                          Paston
Boyens     Sigmund        Neilson        Lochhead
                         Oughton
Bertos           Elliot            James
       Smeltz         Killen

Bench

Moss
Daniel
Christie

That looks pretty good, although I think Brown could push for  spot somewhere and would like to see Daniel's creativity on the park.
You know we belong together...

Its a shame Muscat isnt a kiwi, He is such a mad player and his runs from defence to attack are pritty good. Some one should get him to convert asap.

right back is one that doesnt jump out at you. Has Boyens played there much? What about Plodder or Mulligan?

Oughton to right back with Brown in the midfield instead.

Plodder to the bench, Mulligan to WINZ until he figures out a new career.

Oughton at RB with Brown in midfield would work imo. Or we could swap Siggy and Boyens around.el grapadura2009-02-12 21:59:32

I like the oughton to RB option best

I think herbert pretty committed to a 442, and I dont have a strong view on which set up works best - but arguably our playe mix would suit a 352

Old school Marius.

Not many top sides are brave (or crazy) enough to go 3 at the back these days.

Can see it becoming 5 3 2 pretty quickly against all but the weakest opposition.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Somehow, I dont see us going 3 at the back in Pyongyang either

but if youve got the right players you can adjust to most systems and, as you say, 352 can be played as a 532 in effect - which might actually be a good thing in certain circumstances.

I love how people keep picking Elliott, when was his last competative match exactly.

He only gets picked because he played a handful of premier league games... which was years ago. Hmm is he the new Danny Hay??

In the last few games we have been able to watch him play, the world cup etc, he was largely absent from the park and out played by the opposition midfielders and our own, so why keep picking him?

No club, No form, should be a no brainer... No Chance!!

p.s If Herbert rated him, why hasn't he been signed yet by us? He doesn't appear to have clubs banging down his door at the moment.

If TM's defence, he is right that he hasn't played a competitive game for a while.

Incidentally, I would imagine the Phoenix didn't sign him because of cap, and position challenges.  We haven't exactly been short of Central midfield options.

I think you'll find he'd played more than 50 games for the AWs before he even moved to the Premiership (which is, if you hadnt noticed, is quite a handy league).

As for the rest of your post - thank goodness we have a strict policy of tolerance on this forum.

The one reasonable point you make is re his lack of recent matches - hopefully he locks down a club and gets some games under his belt during the next few months.

352 is a pretty ineffective system in the modern footballing climate, this is largely because most teams now play a variant of 4231 with a lone center forward. 352 therefore produces a situation where 3 center backs are marking one player (the CF) and the side playing 4231 get stacks of space in and around the fullbacks as well as in the 'hole' area for their no10.  Have a read of this fantastic article by the Guardian's Jonathan Wilson where he explains this in greater detail:

Your right it is a handy league... how many games did he play exctly and when was his last one...Perth Glory had a couple former epl players that didn't exactly light the stage and they played at that leel alot longer.

Also prior to been picked upp by fulham, he wasn't getting selected for the all whites was he!

How long has he been looking now? does this not give you some indication that his skills are diminishing with his age. And with Johnson g oing and Smelts etc i am sure we could afford him. But Ricki doesn't sem interested does he... unless HN knows something we all don't.

The Perth Boys (as well as other in ALL A-League Teams) have been past it as a rule, lets be honest and if you remember Elliot was dropped becuase of the disgrace that happened at the confed cup.

TouchMe makes reasonable points about Elliot.

The last time we got to see him play was at the Olympics, where he was one of our few credible players and looked fairly lively if not particularly silky.

His demise from the Premiership was injury related, and the games he played in he performed capably.  However those weren't many and they were almost two years ago now.

Nonetheless purely for proven experience at the level he's worth a shout.  He has been a much better (and more successful) player than others competing with him for that position.  Whether he still is is a reasonable matter for debate, but I don't see that there's a clear replacement.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

sad to see that Daniel isn't eligable for some reason, i would have like to ahve seen him in the team, at least for some creativity from the Bench.

Thats a little random isn't it.
You would think that once he went to Fullham, they lost their rights. Esp because it's been such a long time??

from a local paper on March 1

Also, the Quakes haven't signed midfielder Simon Elliott but are impressed with his fitness. San Jose would have to find roster room to accommodate Elliott, who currently has an advantage over Finnish midfielder Aki Riihilahti. The Finn has been practicing with the team but didn't play Friday

Atleast your not trying to give me any more stick feverish.. you do seem to be an angry man at times. In regards to Elliott

I hope he does get signed and then we can look at him more seriously, but until then I don't think we should.

In saying that the timing of the next aw games means half the squad is doing nothing so he will probaly be a little sharper than them. So I'd say he'd get a run.

I don't really rate him personally, in the games i have watched he's be ok, but never a stand out and I'd like to see as I have said a few times a couple youngsters get a chance. Like i mentioned, Peverley outplayed him the Olympics and he will be afuture all white for years to come.

Good luck to him though for the AW's and getting a contract.

Quick question, and i don't mean to imply your views are bias, I can see your logic, but do you know him personally? You defend rather passionatley!

From San Jose website ...

"SANTA CLARA -- In their final exhibition match before the regular season kicks off, the San Jose Earthquakes were hoping to get a good run in, keep everyone healthy, and maybe even win the game. They accomplished all three things in their 1-0 win Saturday night against the USL-1 Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Rookie forward Quincy Amarikwa scored in the 78th minute to give San Jose the win.

Earthquakes fans who showed up hoping to get their first glimpse of Bobby Convey instead got a good look at another midfield addition who could be making a major contribution this season, Simon Elliott. The New Zealand international started in a central midfield role, and played all 90 minutes for San Jose. The team said they hope to officially announce the signing of Elliot in the upcoming week."
