First round gams in 4 weeks. No media release from NZF yet. It it still ASB sponsored? I see one team recruiting at present is stipulating all players must be nz citizens or have applied for citizenship. Is this a new regulation? #alignment

Same old organisation.... Couldn't possibly give everyone a heads up on the dates for ASB Prem or Youth League. That would be organised!

I suppose we will all get the usual treatment and be told a week before it all starts. It`s not like we have lives and other things to do!!!!!

Maybe waiting to confirm the starters. It is true the some teams from last season struggling to come up the the $$$$ for the entry?

With the demise of Wanderers SC in asb prem, I presume the league has also lost the youth team. Was this primarily a south Auckland based team? Shame if we can't give kids from that region something.

Rodgers boy. Handy footballer. I am surprised he is in youth league. Thought he may have had a sniff with an ASBP team even as a squadie.

Greg has a brother Jamie who played for Ferrymead Bays in the Mainland Premier League in 2012 scoring six goals, unsure were Jamie is now.

FT Canterbury United 1 - Ryan Stanley 49' Waitakere 0

At times the wind effected the game. In the 71 min Waitakere awarded a penalty which Judd Baker took and 'scored' but had the be retaken and was put wide.

ACFC 7 (Myer Bevan, Regont Murati, Reid Drake, Patrick Hay, Nicolas Zambrano (2), Maro Bonsu-Maro) Nelson Marlborough Falcons 1 (Josh Lis) all really even up until half time (1-1 at the break) then Nelson literally imploded in the second half a non existent defense that couldn't compete with ACFC.

Southern thumped wee wee nix 8-1. It was 7-0 at half time i think. I know a lot of the Southern lads, they're a good bunch of players and I know the wee wees are all ' 98 or younger, but does anyone have team line-ups from yesterday?

i disagree with him, but it's a good article and he's a good writer

i think it's important that asb prem bench players are able to get some football during the summer.  this will become more important in forthcoming years as the asb prem becomes the only league our top players play in

I think ultimately it's a matter of what the youth league is created to do. And I think by name and selection it's for youth teams rather than reserve teams. I'm all for the prem players getting game time but think that a youth league isn't the place for it.

yeah it's an interesting one

is it for development or to find out which franchise is the best up to a certain age?

if for development, is it best to have the kids play alongside and against a handful of seniors, or is it best to keep them playing with other kids?

most pro leagues run an under 21 squad as a reserve team that allows 3 to 5 over age players to play.  it seems to be the norm for a mix of practical and developmental reasons

So question -

How many of our highly rated NZ U20 team have been playing Youth league as they cannot make a senior squad?

watched Auckland utd today very poor.

Why do they have over age players ? ( they were also very poor)

Can't they find enough under 20 s players

Waste of Time really

it's a bit of a loophole in the rules - the rules allow youth teams to play up to 2 (might be 3) players per game who are overage, this rule is there to allow teams to drop down out of form or recovering players from their first team to the youth - of course Auckland Utd don't have a senior team so they just have a couple of older guys in their squad (i think Nelson do it as well).

From the Wanderers squad who are playing Youth League this season: Regont Murati (ACFC), Judd Baker (Waitakere), Noah Billingsley (Waitakere) and Gowan Stares (TW). The rest of them are in senior squads except for Elijah Neblett and Hudson's favourite, Moses Dyer, who couldn't get a gig in summer football. The only one who seemed to have a future from all of them was Billingsley.

From the DP today:

It's said that All Whites coach Anthony Hudson isn't keen on young players joining the Phoenix. He'd rather have them training with him in Auckland and getting some time off the bench for a side such as Auckland City, every few weeks.

On the subject of over-age "youth" players, did Melville's Welsh import Marc Evans become the oldest player to ever score a hat trick at national league level with his three goals against Southern at the weekend?

Think the only reason Billingsley is in the Youth squad and not the senior squad is that he's off to the states on a scholarship
