2017 National Youth League

I've been around youth league teams for several seasons now and it certainly makes a big difference having 3 senior league players in a team. Particularly if they are down the middle of the park. It's certainly not the first time Marc Evans has played youth league, and while, as you say the teams are entitled to do it, I think NZF has to decide whether it's a youth development league or a reserve competition for bringing players back from injury, giving fringe players game time etc

Just a quick question.

Is the rule up to 3 or is it 2?  I have seen conflicting reports.  I imagine it's 3 as that would be a pretty easy pickup from NZF if it was 2 and someone played 3.

I think the rule is two SS Premiership players can come down. Hence why players young enough e.g Clayton Lewis, Sarpreet Singh are registered as youth players. Because if they come down it doesn't count as one of the two.

18.4 

The NMYL Named Squad Players shall be made up of either: 

18.4.1 All Youth Players; or 

18.4.2 A combination of Youth Players and Non-Citizen Youth Players provided that the maximum number of Non-Citizen Youth Players is three (3).

I read this part - so I read it that teams are allowed 3 over age (or non-citizen youth players) but only 2 who are National league players. Hence as Luis Garcia says why players such as Clayton Lewis and Sarpreet Singh are listed as NYL players rather than NL

i took 18.4.2 as meaning you can only have three players in your playing squad that are not kiwi youth players?  

then 18.7 as saying you have up to 2 overage players from your NL squad.

Accepting that of course you can name players who are normally in the NL squad in your NYL squad which then don't count as overage players if you play them down.

For a real example does anyone know who the three Hamilton played last week were?  One was the welsh striker, the other two?

D Wyndust ( spelling?) was another. I was told he played against an elder son of a spectator some years back and is the same age as their son(23 - I think).

Yes you are right I misread the definition of non-citizen youth players

I'm sure the number used to be 3 as am fairly sure Nelson Falcons had 3 when they won the league 2 seasons ago. Which may be where the confusion comes from

Ah that will be the answer - I'm sure Nelson Falcons and Auckland United as youth only teams were allowed an extra over-age player.


So back to the Wanderers vs Suburbs game - the third player must have been a NL player registered in the NYL squad, or they only played two.

watched team Wellington beat Eastern Suburbs today 2-0 . Both goals came early using big wind to go over the keeper , who should have done better . Wellington were a pleasure to watch compared to Suburbs , who are about 8 players short on quality . Not helped by the skipper Imrie walking out two weeks back on the team , and with it the best player up front . The enterprise shown by the visitors was how football should be played , and even after a red card in first half , they deserved the victory 

Heard it was 3-1 to Auckland 

Canterbury finished third in the yoof league on the weekend after thrashing Wellington 4-0 at English Park in their last game on Sunday.

And this after being down to ten players early in the second half and having another red-carded in the closing stages:

Canterbury had the second best goal difference after Waitakere.

Probably the Dragons Youth's most memorable game would have been the amazing 6 - 5 away win vs. Tasman in their first game of the season back in mid October.

Ignore the top goal-scorer table for the league when you click on "Season Stats" as it's completely wrong.

It doesn't tally when you add up player's goals from individual matches.

Lyall Matthysen was the Dragons Youth top goal-scorer, while Daniel Thoms and Conor Smith also scored a lot.

Anyone know the real top goal-scorer table for the youth league?

This was a very high-scoring league with five, six, seven or more goals in a game not uncommon.

Even in games not involving Hawkes Bay who were total pants (Canterbury thrashed them 8-0 at English Park, they lost to Team Wellington Youth 9-0).

185 goals in 45 games average of 4.11 per game (almost the same as last years average of 4.2 per game)

Highest scoring 11 (Canterbury United 6 Tasman United 5)

Biggest winning margin 9 (Team Wellington 9 Hawke's Bay United 0)

44% of the games (20) had 5 or more goals in them (compared with 48 % last season)

Amazingly there were 2 0-0 draw's (Canterbury United v Auckland City & Team Wellington v Waitakere United)

I believe it is due to possible unavailability once we get into exam time and away games, along with injury. (At least that's is what   I heard one year when they on had 1 sub available - a few years ago)

It is a Western Suburbs/Miramar partnership - 90/10 in Wests favour due to Dave paying the bill.

Hence the 15/4 split.

Miramar Reserve players (Cap 1) & Wests Reserve players (Cap Prem)  trump Central League players from other clubs.

- obviously exception could be made for likes of Just, Rogerson & Green, Clayton etc (regular Wests CL players), but its no real surprise/news the partner clubs have 72% of the training squad.

There will always be gripes by some about trials/process/bias - wether at TWY, NZU17, NZSS  etc but that's just the way things work/are. 

2 seasons ago when Ole wouldn't allow their players to be involved, the majority of the team came from Lower Hutt as thats where the coach Lloyd O'Keefe was based - they won the league that year. Coaches will always go with the players they know.
