Kick off 5th October; one national league; no semi finals; league winner only; no matches labour weekend so players can attend U19s; all over by Christmas. Play!

So would be better to have NYL after xmas when OFC U17 qualifers are in American Samoa then?

problem is there is no perfect (or worst) time to have the ASB Youth League - this call clears the way for young players to be involved with their clubs NRFL pre-season program and clears the way for the OFC U17's like Harry has pointed out - but yes it's less than ideal for clubs trying to prepare for Napier - there is always going to be fallout from whatever they choose - personally I just hope they stick with one concept for a while as it's much easier to mitigate an issue such as this if you can learn from the previous year and so on.

I can see problems (have already heard of a few) with kids sitting exams - success in NCEA does mean a lot to this age group

Don't piss off old people - the older we get, the less "Life in Prison" is a deterrent

This happened to HBU a couple of years back when lads had exams which didn't finish until 5 on a friday they had to wait to leave get to Auckland around 12 midnight and play the next day.

Have a catch up game if the u17 are to be playing in the league, play before and after xmas finish early Feb then players can go to club preseason

So plan a national youth league around a few winter clubs and dont worry about the U17s!!

Yeah that sounds good they dont need decent preperation for a major tournament anyway, As long as the Napier tourney goes well for your club thats all that matters eh.

And you'd need more than one catch up game they'd be away for over 2 weeks which could be as many as 3 games.

I'm sure they did but the brains trust lack brains! But it is obviously easy for the Auckland teams to be critical with their one away trip (Hamilton doesn't count).

U17 play in the youth league as a team don't they? so thats there build up to the quilifying right there playing games week in week out form November onwards.

Lot of Coastal players. MPL experience. One of those school players surely counts as Coastal. Roll on School First XI being a standalone Wednesday comp in 2015. A number of the squad have played Youth League las season.

Onwads and upwards I reckon.

Apart from the players and their parents, does anyone care? Surely if you're not already in the Wanderers squad you're probably wasting your time with this?

Not true. Bazeley & Co. follow all these teams and their players pretty closely. Not to mention Ramon & Co. in the case of ACFC youth.

Yeah but there isn't much historical support for significant changes to national squads after the first couple of camps. You might see one or two move in/out I guess, but for the majority the ASBYL is just a bit of a summer knock about. Fair enough though. I know a bunch of the players and they love it. Good pitches, good teams, good weather and a chance to play up and down the country a bit.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
