He plans to form a leadership group to ''tap into the experience'' of Canterbury's senior players and to learn from other elite sports in Christchurch, such as the Canterbury Cavaliers hockey team and the Canterbury rugby setup.

Does he intend to select the older players no matter how bad they play seeing as he wants their input?

Haven't seen (or heard of) Devine since seeing him at Suncorp in the inagaural A-league game - and wondering who the hell he was. The ensuing 60-odd minutes did little to inform or enthuse me. Ugly.

In recent seasons sadly for Rhys had been sidelined with a few injuriy issues. At times seems to spend more sideline than on the park.

De Bono Appointed Canterbury United Assistant Coach

4 June 2014

Canterbury United announced today the appointments of Mike de Bono as Assistant Coach and Alan Stroud as
Goalkeeping Coach of the Canterbury United Dragons for the 2014/15 ASB Premiership season.

For de Bono it will be his first foray into coaching at this level, having held previous roles as the Mainland Pride (Women’s National League) Head coach, NZF staff coach at National Talent Centre’s as well as having served as Football Development Manager with Capital Football and a development officer for both NZF and Mainland Football.

Sean Devine, recently appointed Canterbury United Head Coach, believed Mike would bring plenty of technical capability, experience and enthusiasm to his staff.  “Mike gained a lot of experience through his work for New Zealand Football and District Federations
and to have him involved as part of our coaching staff is great for everyone’s development.”

De Bono is heavily involved in NZF coach education at federation level and Devine believes his modern day coaching
experiences will prove to be a great compliment to the setup.  “It’s fantastic to be able to bring someone with so much football knowledge to the coaching staff.”

Alan Stroud, another well-known personality in the football community and former All Whites Goal keeper, has been appointed as Canterbury United Goalkeeping Coach.  Devine is excited about the support staff he is mustering.  “Alan played three internationals for the All Whites during his playing career and has been involved as a coach for many years. His knowledge and personal approach is an excellent fit and I am sure he will assist us really well as we look to meet our new season objectives.”

The announcement of the coaching staff could not come at a better time as NZF looks to shortly confirm the ASB Premiership 2014-2015 schedule.

De Bono and Stroud will begin their new roles immediately.  Canterbury United’s pre-season will not commence until
September, after which the local club competitions will have concluded.

This is all good stuff but why not reward some local guys who have worked hard for last 3 or 4 season. Players who have not played for Canterbury I believe will play with more desire and wanting to win to prove they have what it takes to play at that level. saying that cashmere dragons as they should be called will do no better with the same squad as last season under new coaching

Too many softies in the squad of late. Too many poms may also be the problem.
A few more of the Stevie G type 'you're big and you're Fg hard' needed.

IMO.

Been there done that big fail.

A later kick off than 2pm may be a better bet to get more punters.

People won't follow football week in week out for anything of NZ origin. Fact.

Just a few of the die hards that's all.

A winning team would get a small [about 100] extra increase in the gate.

More people watch a club Rugby League game than most ASB prem games and they make more noise.

We need the embankment to be the place to go at ASB Park not the stand, go get amongst the rabble.

Note to Refs bring ear plugs.

Read this update then...

Canterbury United have appointed full Coaching and Management Team, the season kicks off in October and home games will now be played on Saturday.

Firstly we now have a full Coaching and Management team appointed for 20104/15 season. These are as follows:

ASB Premiership Head Coach Sean Devine

ASB Premiership Assistant Coach Mike de Bono

ASB Premiership Goalkeeping Coach Alan Stroud

ASB Premiership Coach Assistant Dan Terris

ASB Premiership Team Manager Martin Stewart

ASB NYL Head Coach Alan Walker

ASB NYL Assistant Coach Paul Bateson

Next season is kicking off earlier than normal with ASB NYL starting on October 4/5 and ASB Premiership commencing on October 25/26 . It is expected the draws will be out within 4-5 weeks.

Recently Canterbury United had a planning day where a number of personnel including senior players discussed a number of areas whereby we all were looking to improve our performances on and off the field . Amongst some of the areas we decided to change is all Canterbury United home games will be played on a Saturday this season. Most of the players prefer this new approach and whilst it has been trialled before previously we are confident football supporters in Christchurch will turn up at ASB Football Park this season on a Saturday.

With the ASB Premiership commencing on October 25/26 it is likely Sean and his squad will commence pre season training for some players from early-mid September depending when each club playing season ends. If any clubs continue playing in September in either of the Chatham Cup Final or South Island Championship Play-Off then players will be given a break before commencing pre season training.Likewise Alan Walker will commence ASB NYL preseason training in first week of September following a trial matches in late August.

Both Coaching teams are casting their net wide this year to identify local talent for both this season and in the future. With the future in mind Canterbury United is nearing the end of it's first season of the new Haier Canterbury United High Performance Academy. With an emphasis on match preparation both on and off the field as well as skill development the Haier Academy Management and Coaching team (Andy Pitman , Martin Stewart , Aaron Clapham , Joe Hall ,Dan Terris and Lee Padmore ) are delighted with the attitude and progress shown by much of the group .The program finishes in mid August and following a full review and despite there are certain to be improvements the model looks promising at this stage.I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andy Pitman for all the time and effort he has put in especially in the formative months of setting up the Haier Academy . Andy has a vision for the future and his commitment in getting this Academy up to and over the start line is much appreciated by all.

Several clubs were frustrated Canterbury United didn't hold a raffle this year however due to raffle license restrictions we were not able to conduct a raffle and it is looking very simular in 2015 as well.

We will again be looking to some clubs to assist Canterbury United with match day set up at ASB Football Park on match day. This is a great opportunity to raise funds for your club so we ask for your cooperation on this matter.

Lastly on behalf of all Canterbury United players, coaching and management team and Board we thank all clubs for their support of Canterbury United by way of the levies paid by all players.Without this generous contribution we would not be able to field two elite teams which provide a pathway for talent in our region

Your in football,

Roger Georgieff

Thanks OTM.

Other sport takes over in Summer on Saturday.

Bums on seats or legs on the bank will be down this year. They had it before {Saturdays] and it got canned because of less interest than on a Sunday.

I agree the players may like it as means another day off and no Saturday training.

Yip and getting on the booze after the game with Sunday recovery day.

Will be very interesting.  Hard enough to get people to the game anyway.  Got to agree the bank is the place to go.  The support and atmosphere is great over there.  As long as O'Leary does not ref and tell the supporters to not be so vocal like he did last year....

The whole Aaron Clapham fan club on the bank won't be there this season as they all play cricket. Silly idea I reckon.

Link to draw for ASB season below.

Canterbury get TWO byes in 4 weekends.

Auckland City get a bye the week after playing Canterbury @ K Street which is also the week before ACFC play Waitakere @ K Street, lets them freshen up before playoffs.

Is NZF trying to win favours with a cash cow called ACFC?

Maybe the Nix Reserves can prove a point about them being worthy of a spot and take ACFC out of the playoffs in the last game of the season.

Miles John - ex Bristol Rovers academy and Port Talbot (Welsh Premier League). Well-regarded it seems at Napier City Rovers this season. A tricky 19 year-old midfielder.

His highlights reel from You Tube (I think he's the #7 in the early yellow strip footage and I think he's sometimes wearing #7 and sometimes #8 in the red shirt footage):

Article about him at Napier:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/sport/n...

"John has impressed to date, possessing terrier-like skills. He's not afraid to nip at the heels of Beefeaters twice his height.

The teenager has vision and makes a habit of hitting the goal line with speed, before cutting back well-timed crosses on a 45-degree angle to those astute enough to anticipate hanging back to put the ball past the goalkeeper while the defence shadows John."

Good kid - has fitted in well here at Napier.   Won the Central League "Best and Fairest/MVP" award and the Supporters Player of the year.

Look after him for us.   We want him back next year.
