Watching the Phoenix women's reserves atm and they're almost as stroppy as the men, so I can definitely say it's a phoenix thing.
Did they all have the fake English accents too? All their kids develop English accents to fit in with the cool kids
Do you actually know any of the kids at the Nix Academy?

Which accent? Cockney? Scouse? Somerset yokel? Geordie? It'd be hilarious if a bunch of kids are starting to talk like Sid the Sexist

Just interested how you know they all have fake English accents? Fact of the matter is that the skipper of the Reserves last year and this year's skipper are both English. I know for a fact that none of the others "have developed an English accent to fit in with the cool kids." Those that have English accents are English and they are in the minority. But hey don't let the facts get in the way of a good story! Some of the vitriol directed at the kids is disappointing. Fully understand the frustration from grassroots supporters with the Phoenix and its Academy and their perceived arrogance and disregard for the grassroots game but think directing this at the kids is juvenile. Tall poppy and a hint of envy maybe?

That’s a fair point about their age and commenting about kids, I was the first one to make the fake English accent comments so I apologise for any harm caused.

To be fair to these kids its not shocking that they've picked up accents. People's accents develop and change depending on where they live and who they are cose to. Spend a few years in a foregin country and I gurantee your accent will change. It may not be on purpose but it will change.

i thought it was a joke and quite funny

i played in a couple of teams where some of the kiwis adopt the english or scottish accent to 'fit in'. was always a good source of a laugh.

i also think it's amusing that a couple of people have found their required daily dose of  outrage from this

I wasn't the one that suggested they had fake accents, in fact I said that the ones I heard were genuine. Maybe learn to look at who's posting before typing a novel.

Also if you're offended by the idea that kids might develop certain accents and ways of talking to fit into an in-group then you clearly need some better shark to get offended by.

I have absolutely no issue with anyone talking about the players at the Academy as long as the chat is true and balanced. Nor would I have any issue with the allegation that the kids talk with fake English accents if it was true....which it is not. As mentioned I totally get the frustration towards the Club and its Academy but just think taking cheap potshots at the youngsters is juvenile. Even the dumbest troll can tell the difference between Received Pronunciation (what King Big-Ears and BBC newsreaders speak) and a regional accent, I'm going to guess these kids aren't speaking RP. I couldn't tell you the difference between Scouse and Brummie, but I could sure as hell tell you the difference between Geordie and Somerset yokel. Even as simple as: "do they sound like they're off Coronation Street, Emmerdale or EastEnders"?

Couple of intriguing fixtures this round.

Whanganui Athletic at home vs Napier City Rovers. Whanganui have been competitive  at home without getting that elusive win. So far City Rovers continue to struggle on the road. Whanganui also beat City Rovers in pre season so this could be a close encounter. Extremely important game for Whanganui if they are to get going this season.

Also the Petone vs Miramar game at Petone Memorial. Mar dropping a lead last week will be hurting and going up against a Petone side who on are on a 3 game losing streak, this one could go either way imo.

My God, the hostility for asking a simple question out of curiosity.

"My neighbour's got a dog"
"Really, what kind of dog?"
"HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW DO I LOOK LIKE A DOG BREEDER?!? WHY ARE YOU ASKING FOR PEDIGREE FORMS AND DNA SWABS?!?"

I am just amazed that there are apparently some people who don't seem to know that there is no "English accent", there are literally hundreds which are very different from one another, I would have been satisfied with an answer like "Northern", "London", or "Posh".

Fair call.  Just to finish off the accent debate.  Go down to a national league basketball game and see how many American accents you can hear among the players.  I think the limit is 3 per team who are actually imports.  I think there is a certain amount of truthfulness to the cool claim in both sports.  It is nothing new.  Was around in my playing days in the 1980s.

Sorry flogging dead horse. Alot of those Kiwi NBL players would have been to US College for 2-4 years, and acquired a bit of Yankee twang. Joe Bell did, though he's probably losing it now. Ryan Nelsen though never seemed to shake his flat vowels - and I love him for it.

And re the Weenix likely a lot of the kids have English parents. I know the Supyk brothers do, and only moved to Canterbury fairly recently.

How do we get the results of each round in the Central League.  I am sitting in Wanganui at 6.35 pm, have gone onto the NZ Football website and no results are visible.  It appears that the table has been updated.

Good point, but after all it is their competition so I thought that they may have an interest in keeping the punters informed - after all they do get the entry fees and a slice of the TAB betting dollars and I know the odd punter who likes a flutter on the Central League..  A lot of our older club members have an intense interest in the Central league and do not, cannot or will not, get involved in the many forms of social media - they do have a tendancy to go to the websites for results.

Went to watch SO vs NCR on the weekend. SO are in for a very, very long season. Score line flattered them in the end as Napier missed a penalty and another half a dozen decent chances.

SO struggled to have any decent possession and when they did they lost it far too easily, also very poorly disciplined and will struggle once they lose players to red cards and injuries as there didn't seem to be much depth off their bench. The two English lads Cunniff and Gaul pretty much spent the whole game gobbing off to the opposition, they'd be handy players if they could keep their mouths shut.

NCR looked decent but nothing spectacular, definitely showed their experience at this level though.

In fairness, Stop out lost 2-0 to 10 men last weekend, when the nix player was sent off quite early on at 0-0.

Good for the League tbh - i had thought olympic were going to run away with it, but if Wests & Nix beat their respective opponents tomorrow, then Olympic, Wests & Nix all tied on points (olympic will have a game in hand).

Reckon the two ex Olympic players have made a big difference but Stu Pyne becoming the de facto coach will have made an enormous difference. Fantastic coach who will get the best out of most sides!
