from what i saw on fifa+ the miramar olympic game was a terrible watch.

does anyone at the ground disagree?
Yeah I was at the ground, wouldn't say it was terrible but certainly both teams didn't look very cohesive in the final third. Miramar tried and tried and tried but couldn't get the right combinations going or convert numerous half-chances, Olympic on the counter were surprisingly toothless. That said home side defence did well especially when Miramar tried to play long ball style, they dominated them physically.

Watched IBU vs NW 2ns half. Good close game from two teams who I think will find it tough.

A mate who was there said IBU look  like they could concede and score in every play. Have some decent attack but not super strong at the back

Not that surprising though. The idea of job sharing with the Canadian uni was weird and I've only heard bad things about his character, and that's from people in NZ and Canada.

Not sure who you are talking to, but players talk really highly of him and are gutted he is leaving. Has been a falling out between him and the Ole owner who has a bit of form in this area. Have you got any information on his character?

Is that a broad cross section of players?

Presume if he worked with him here and Canada then they wouldn’t mind him too much as they travelled half the world to play.

Regardless…..it’s stink timing for Wests and Ole. They are in danger of losing the status they held a few years ago as one of the best academies going round.

The academy just feels like it has lost its way a bit. Ben Sippola (sp?) was a great heir to Declan Edge. They won CL under him and that team was stacked with now all whites. Really that was the last time that Ole really stood out. That could be my one eyed opinion though.

Agreed they do seem to have lost their identity. Feel more like a Club now than an academy. Senior side is now stacked with ex Nix, Karori and North American players. At best there are maybe 5 kids that have come through the Ole academy system. As much as Declan Edge is one strange dude, he can develop players and reckon the rot started setting in when he left. Almost feels like they need a total reset.

At the same time the Nix Academy has gone from strength to strength. Is a very clear pathway from academy teams to the first team and pro football if you are good enough. Excellent facilities at NZCIS. They also now have their own accommodation facilities for out of town kids, and sound pastoral care it seems. Increased chance of making NZ age group teams, with guys like Greenacre working between both?

If you are a talented footballer, and not sure why you & your parents would now choose Ole ahead of Weenix, if you had the opportunity to go to either.

One advantage of Ole is it still may have good connections to various US Colleges, for those who want to try that route. But has that diminished now that American (and very keen fly fisherman) Sippola has left to live in Wanaka?

And worth noting ambitions from Auckland FC and Christchurch United to improve their own youth/academy setups too. The motive for talented kids to move to Ole from other parts of the country is falling. I mean a bunch of players at Northern League clubs who haven't even pursued an academy pathway are now in the pipeline of Auckland FC.

Agree. Under Declan Ole were revolutionary & set the example. Now, in the general way of revolutions, they've been sidelined then overtaken. But he sure was a man for his time. I still remember Ivan Vuksich's disbelief watching his all-star ACFC being put to the sword by teenaged Ryan Thomas, Tyler Boyd & Co. at Porritt Stadium saying at halftime: "Jeez, these kids are better than us!"

How stunning was his rant last weekend after their loss to Miramar about the state of officials. Was up on the Western Suburbs FB page for a while but video now been gassed. might have been his farewell speech

What's up with their discipline.

Today. 6 yellows and a double yellow red to their keeper.
Last week. 5 yellows and a double yellow red
First week. 2 yellows and a straight red.

Out of possession they just foul the other team the entire time. Especially in the middle to break down attacks. They get away with murder.

yip, foul and antagonise. coaching staff constantly seeking opportunities to argue and confront.

obviously not 'the ole way'

i wonder if they'll tidy things up in the near future.

i think he was one of the assistants. not like 'auckland city assistant', where even their fourth choice left back is for funding purposes an assistant. he coached them on saturday

Went to Petone vs North Wellington today. Wow, what a game! 7-3 to Petone, deserved winners but was mostly a close game that blew out in the end. Was a very open game but both were honestly very clinical. Beautiful ground too.

Petone took the lead 3 times but North Wellington kept pegging them back with equalisers, Wilson Souphanthavong with two excellent goals defo one of the standouts from the game. Both at 2-1 and 3-2 it looked like Petone could run away with it but they kept stumbling, a lot of playing out from the back which their defence and keeper weren't a good fit for it, and the keeper made a few questionable sweeper keeper runs too (one resulting in the first NW goal).

Matt Brazier came on for Petone and scored instantly and with another goal soon after that they were sound at 5-3, a couple extra cherry on top goals late on fattening the scoreline. Kieran McMinn was also great for Petone with a hatty courtesy of some well-timed runs but why oh why would you have your centre-forward wearing number 5?? Give that man the 9, he's earnt it!

Anyway Petone were the better side and deserved the chocolates - you have to worry for North Wellington with their weakness in midfield and the amount of goals they're letting in at the moment.

I have thought NW were going to go down for the last ~3 seasons or so, but this time looks like one time too many, imho.

I was going through all the games so far in Tribe. Olympic have the fewest with 3 yellows but in four rounds Wests got 19 yellow cards (2 of them were second yellows) and 2 red cards (one for a coach)

At $25 for a yellow and $75 for a red that’s a lot of cheddar! The team gets fined $500 on top of that if they get 5 or more yellows in a game which happened twice already.

I don't think the count is correct. I think they have had 3 red cards for players in the first three rounds, and one coach sent as well! (2 players were sent off for double yellows, as was the coach)

In first 4 rounds they have had
3 Reds (1 Straight, 2x 2 Yellows - 1 was a coach)
22 yellows (inc the 2 for second yellows above)
They had 11 Yellows against Miramar - 7 of which came at the end of the game and included 4 coaches
They picked up 8 Yellows v Petone

Loke playing as a left sided full back is interesting. 🤔

That first ressies goal was some real quality as well, beautiful one touch footy - Candy, Loke, Makowem and Supyk who finished it off all involved.

Lads playing at a nice pace too, it's a half decent watch!
