What are the chances of better aligning the summer and winter seasons so that ALL CLUBS in New Zealand can play in the Chatham Cup?
I'd love to see my local club, Ngaruawahia AFC take on the likes of Team Wellington or ACFC in the semis/final of the oldest sports knock-out comp in NZ (Aussie too?).
If the Aussies can find a way of doing it with their numerous state leagues and the A-League why not here?
I am aware that many players play summer-winter-summer-winter etc but like the UK these players should be classed as Cup tied i.e. play for Central in the Cup you cannot play for ACFC in the Cup. Also the ASBP teams could be thrown in towards the end of the Winter season but prior to the ASBP season, so that clubs could use these games as a sort of pre-season (like it will be for the A-League). I think there would be a lot more interest in the Chatham Cup if it really was the pinnacle of Kiwi football again.
For the OFC Champions Legaue you could then take the ASBP Final Winner and the Chatham Cup Final winner, and if they were both the same team either the ASBP round robin winner or the Chatham Cup final loser would be the other qualifier.
