This was the programme cover for New Zealands controversial second-round World Cup qualifying clash with Kuwait at Mount Smart Stadium on 10 October 1981.
Auckland City Football Clubs legendary gear steward Arthur Egan was the All Whites Team Manager on that historic day that all Kiwi sports followers will never forget.
In this game the All Whites slipped to their only defeat in 15 World Cup qualifying matches. After the referee awarded the visitors two penalties for handball, a youthful spectator ran onto the pitch and threw a soft-drink can at the official. The New Zealand Football Association was subsequently fined by FIFA for that incident and other crowd disturbances.
This programme also highlights tobacco sponsorship, which was common at this time. Sport and smoking may have seemed an unlikely combination, but sporting bodies struggling for financial support often found the tobacco companies more than willing to inject much-needed funds into their competitions and activities. In the 1970s and 1980s tobacco companies sponsored a number of major sports events in New Zealand, including tennis tournaments, cycling tours and car rallies. Tobacco advertising and sponsorship have been banned in New Zealand since 1995.
On Tuesday 24 February the Kuwait national team will play it first match on New Zealand soil in nearly 28 years. Arthur Egan will be there once againmake sure you are as well!

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Queenslander 3x a year.
I can see why they wouldn't want to play. What's to be gained? It would be a makeshift squad of local players, so no real help to anyone. This way everyone's happy. Auckland City and Dawkins United get some good games, the Kuwaitis get some good games, Ricki gets to have a look at a couple of players he wants to have a look at. NZF don't spend any money. Everyone's a winner.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I wear Kiwitea tinted glasses so everything I say is suspect.
I felt 2 nil was a good result although Auckland should have had a goal. While so many were giving it 100% stand outs for me were Chad Combes, and Johnny Raj with Andy Barron and the substitute gk (Little ?) looking pretty good in the second half (hell I am so biased I could easily name most of the squad).
Personally I was expecting 4 goals so was pretty happy with the result. Both teams started solidly with Auckland occasionally getting out played but bustling themselves to safety and at times having the better of the play. At the start of the second half I was wondering if the real Kuwait had turned up as they had a go keeping position (much akin to Brazil v the All Whites) but once again the kings of Kiwitea muscled themselves into the game Kuwait had some pretty good players notably their #24 who came on in the 2nd half (or was that when I noticed him?) a swift little runner who could have caused real trouble if he had support
The visiting crowd were bloody brilliant every club deserves a cheer squad like them (I couldnt hear myself shouting that will surprise those who may know me ). Extremely noisy but very friendly!!
Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Very impressed with the performance of Maksim Manko, a centre midfielder from the Youth league that came on for Auckland in the second half.
A shining light in an otherwise dull performance from a very mediocre team.
Other than the first 5 mins when Auckland had some parity, they were outplayed and outplayed with ease.
Auckland suffered from the 3 young players in Raj, Feneridis and Nikolic lack of experience in the first half. Too easily and often, they were pulled out of position by dummy runners, kicked possession away or took wrong options when they had possession. Chad Coombes ran around like a headless chicken and while industrious, he was intent on kicking them more than playing football. Lee and Vicelich and in the 2nd spell Mulrooney and Barron played well. Manko was getting yelled at by his own players for the last 10-15mins he was on for not passing the easy option. Shining light? Are you his mate? He didn't play or do f**k all.
The major difference was that the Kuwait players passed the ball to their own players in a manner in which they could use it i.e the speed of the pass was easily controllable. The Auckland guys kicked at their team mates at full tit so they couldn't use it on the first touch. The Kuwait players also played their way out of double cover quite easily especially in 2 on 4 scenarios where they were boxed in and just got out of it easily, often switching a 45y sqaure ball and move forward again. Kuwait could see 3-4 plays ahead and knew where the next pass was going. Auckland lacked ideas in the attacking half.
The red card was so justified for a studs up boot in the stomach. If thats a dodgy red, I'd hate to play in your league. Maybe a dozen freekicks which mostly went Aucklands way and that includes ignoring the Kuwait players falling over everywhere which is probably more typical of the players being professional and the leagues they play in. When Kuwait went to 10, the game became more even but Auckland never got a shot on goal. In the opposite, the first goal for Kuwait was just class, and also the one that hit the upright as well as a couple of saves by Rosco. Greg Ulhmann might have had a headers chance if he got it but that was the only thing.
The keeper that came on was John Fletcher - Liam Little is playing for Waitakere.
Really, it was akin to watching Waitakere vs some school boy outfit.
Auckland City older players if you have not noticed always yell and scream at there younger players (a lot of the time to cover up there own misgivings) and does nothing for the team spirit.
Every player in the squad should not be over 30.
From what I saw Manko was doing good passes to feet and if he was getting yelled at, it was from a player that does not have a first touch to control the ball.
I do not know Manko and is only the 2nd time I have seen him play.
The 1st playing in the Youth league where he stood out too.
Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
