Yeah it's frustrating - so many of the matches the last few weeks have been majorly out of sync.

But this is at least much more watchable than the stuttering, glitchy Olympic stream yesterday.

I hope Olympic will go back to having an actual camera operator for their next home game like they did against Auckland City - because that stream was one of the best we've had so far this Championship phase

Southern League sides back on form it seems.

Coastal thrashing Wests 5-0. Literally flicked over to watch NCR v WeeNix while it was H/T in that game and flick it back on and they've scored three quickly after the break and added another to boot. Was that a four minute hattrick to David Yoo btw - 51', 52' & 55'?

Wests looking more and more likely to be the Petone of the Championship this year based off their three games so far.

Tech lead Auckland City 1-0 as well early on. Really liking the surprising nature of this NL Championship phase so far - it's a good watch when the streams are up and going.

I was down at Kiwitea Street today to watch Auckland City face Cash Tech. Gee, it must be frustrating watching City each week. The best team in the country in terms of personnel by a mile but they seem to struggle to score more than one or two even against poorer opposition. Tiki taka with no cutting passes or actual gameplan.

Stipe Ukich again a standout although sometimes his decision making can be poor. But at his age his flair and ability to beat his man is exciting. Otherwise, they weren’t under too much pressure. I think they could do with  a proper 10 who can split the lines with a pass. Whenever I’ve seen Gould come off the bench he’s made a difference in that space. They’ve really relied on the individual class of Gillion, De Vries and Ukich in 2024. They seem to find a way though…also Myer Bevan back in action although didn’t get much good ball today.

Cash Tech looked solid after receiving a battering from the Nix reserves last week. Big and tough at the back as per. Tough day out for their attackers but Tagochi was sharp and scored a great opener. The striker Hallahan? Looked very solid also. Held the ball up well.

A nice open league this season and some different styles which is good to see. What a win for Coastal today!

Napier really had to put away a weak Nix reserves side though…

Thought the 1-1 result between CashTech and Auckland City a fair relection.
CashTechs goal was well constructed and they defended well.
I was a long way away from the penalty decision but I felt that the Cashmere Goalkepper got to the ball first and then took out the attacker as collateral damage.
Bevan who was largely anonymous took the penalty well..
Citys tactics in the second half were a little strange. Every time Lorenz got the ball at RB he turned it back inside rather than getting Ukich on the ball. Ukich looked likely although he does tend to over elaborate.
Wonder if Ukich stole Lorenzs lunch money ?
City definitely missing Howieson and particularly Gillion.
Smallest crowd I have seen at Kiwitea for a while although weather a bit average.
Extremely even league but not sure if that will continue.

Cashmere were unlucky not to get all three points today the penalty that  was given was dubious and they had a good shout to be given one themselves right on the stroke of full time.

City held the ball well but there was no killer ball through to Bevan, Manickum or Ukich.

I'm enjoying how we are getting some unexpected results each round so far - still hard to predict how good a few of the teams are this year. Also good to see no team has maximum points either.

As the weeks go on I'm sure it will become more clear where each team is at, but before the National League started I expected that 3 rounds in the table would be starting to be reflective of finishing positions which I dont think is the case yet.

Very enjoyable so far, Just wish some of the streams were of a higher standard

Great result for Tech away to Auckland City. Doing it without two of their best players Garbhan Coughlan and Danny Knight (sunning it up in Bali this week) even better for them

Napier City Rovers weren't helped by diabolical refereeing performance. Including that no penalty decision on Oscar Faulds when he was in the box early first half. shameful

Probably the worst part of the refereeing display was the way the referee made Bill Robertson stand up to receive a yellow card.  There is no doubt that Bill deserved it but the arrogant way that it was delivered was beyond belief.

Yeah that was just bizarre. Not sure what Bill Robertson said to the ref, but can understand him being pretty darned annoyed. Making him stand up was like the ref acting out being a school master talking to a naughty schoolboy. pathetic. some interesting footage in here. the ref or NZF's ref bosses might want to take a look

Jeez... I read the accompanying article but couldn't find the video. That is a shocking challenge and an even worse call.

Maybe ref sees Faulds' boot make contact with the ball as he's on the way down and thinks it's the defenders foot that gets it? Only explanation I can think of.

It's my experience that the Ref's bosses won't be too interested - it's pretty much a closed shop.

One thing in the refs defence is that there are player bodies between him and the challenge and he did a pretty good job of keeping up with the play. I'd hope the AR had a view and was able to advise but that didn't work either. I think it's one where he just had to guess, it happens sometimes.

Obviously he's got this one wrong, but making a coach stand up to receive a yellow is something I've seen before and I don't think is unreasonable so it's clearly indicated who has received the card - if Robertson didn't want to be treated like a naughty schoolboy then he shouldn't have gone and got himself a yellow for acting like a naughty schoolboy.

Totally agree. The penalty call was clearly wrong but besides that call interested to know on what basis it was a "diabolical refereeing performance." Besides that call I thought he had a pretty good game. Not sure the NCR crew can have many complaints about referring performances...generally get the rub of the green during their home CL games

Important to remember it's only national league and they don't have VAR to get a second look. It's frustrating but the refs are gonna make a few stuff-ups over the course of the competition and that's just life.

Should be interesting seeing how the nix reserves do since they should be losing the first-team players thanks to the A-League starting up. Wonder how long it'll take them to fall to 10th?

This is exactly why all Nix (and next year Auckland FC) games should be treated as byes, i.e. should be played for no points,  as one week they can field 5 professionals and the next week just one. Has anyone ever seen the details of he "Participation Agreement", referenced in NZF's Regulations, which sets out the basis for the Nix participating in the National League? It's confidential, so clubs are not in a position to know if it has been breached, and in which case cannot determine  if there is a basis to appeal. Kafka-esque?

Birkenhead (4) v Napier (2) at Shepherds Park.
Pretty ordinary game .
Score a fair reflection . Birko butchered a lot of chances
Napier very ordinary. Faulds got a goal but was largely anonymous and in the pocket of Birkos back 3.. Didn't get much service and Napier didn't seem to play to his strengths.

Only Jesse Randall, but that was a while back that he was announced as shifting north.

Pretty dire game from Auckland City against Western Suburbs today an early Adam Mitchell goal cancelled out by a stupid penalty to give away from Mario Ilich, Wests pressed well and pushed and pushed and pushed and probably had the better of the first half.

City only getting ahead from the penalty spot when Quillan Roberts got sent off for DOGSO and Finn Diamond went in goal. You'd think a team like City would run away in a situation like that but it feels like they barely held on.

This could potentially be the first year since the national league revamp that Olympic doesn't make the finals. While there's only 2 years to look at where there were 10 teams in the championship phase, both times second place needed 21+ points. (22 in 2022 and 21 in 2023). Even if they win every game from here they'd only be at 20 points and would have to bank on multiple teams stumbling from here.

Interesting to think about since they just won the Chathams cup and you would have expect them to be practically perfect this year

Birkenhead (4) v Phoenix Reserves (2) at Shepherds Park.
Disclaimer - left at 4-2 so didn't see David Balls goal.
4-1 would have been a more accurate reflection.
Birko seem to be emerging out of a bit of a form slump - Chatham Cup Semi Final loss plus injurys a lot to do with that.
Had Monty Patterson back with a hat trick , plus Sam Philp off the bench and Silvio Rodic back in goal.
Harris Zeb had one of those games that he shows a bit of interest in and had the Phoenix RB on toast.
For he Phoenix GSR showed good footwork and the ability to beat a man but not with any end result. Concerning to see a young guy with a substantial knee brace on - the sort you see in Masters football.
Dublin Boon in goal was good but will be having nightmares about the third goal .Would have been helped by having a defence in front of him
Apart from perhaps Gillion the rest were pretty average. Given the amount of talent that has been promoted upward perhaps not a surprise that they were very average.
David Ball showed a few nice touchs with his passing but tend to think you won't see much of him in the A League this season.
Big test for Birkos resurgence against Olympic next week.

Cracking game between Tech and Coastal down south. Real end to end stuff especially in the first half which ended 3-2 to Coastal - who are genuine contenders to make the final at this point. 2 pts off Birko and still to play them, Easts, Napier and Auck City. Take points off a couple of them and they'll be right up there.
