NELSON ENTER BID FOR TEAM IN 2016-17 ASB PREMIERSHIP - "TASMAN UNITED"
ANNOUNCEMENT FROM NZF ON ENTRIES FOR NEW LEAGUE DUE DECEMBER 16
Nelson Bays Football this week formally submitted a bid for a team to enter the ASB Premiership for the 2016-17 season when it expands to ten sides:
'Mark Sheehan, a member of the working group behind the bid, believes NBF has given itself "the best possible chance" to be included in the new 10-team national league from 2016, particularly as the bid - under the name Tasman United - has united support from every club across Nelson and Marlborough and from Mainland Football itself.
"Everyone is behind it. They want to see the youth success continue and for the men to be playing on a national level at Trafalgar Park," he said.
Sheehan said NBF and the working group, made up of representatives from numerous clubs, have done all their "due diligence" around financial stability and player depth, and have put together a bid that "the entire football community can be really proud of."
"I think we've got as much of a chance as anyone and everyone is backing this across the top of the south which is a powerful statement. We are confident we can not just compete but be very competitive and sustainable too," he said.
...Falcons coach Mark Johnston, another member of the working group and someone who has played in the ASB Premiership, firmly believed a team from the top of the south could be competitive in the national league, even against top clubs Auckland City, Team Wellington and Waitakere United.
"I've had 26 players say they're keen to play and we're only really looking for 21 and five of those have to be under 20. I think we could have a team that will not only compete but will challenge for the top spots and at the end of the day that's what the teams are vying for," he said.'
Jeremy Brockie backs the new "Tasman United" concept for a Nelson-Marlborough ASB Premiership franchise:
It's heartening to see one of NZ's leading professional players stating his intent to finish his career where it started for his home town club. It's rare for our top All Whites and pro players to return to local football after their pro careers.
Ivan Vicelich is the glaring exception of course and no blame can be attached to the likes of Ryan Nelsen who was physically too crocked at the end of his career to continue playing and had an instant coaching offer in a good league..
I question why, in the Aussie football environment, Tim Cahill opts to play in China rather than help football in his own country by returning to play in the A-League. He would still earn very decent money playing in Australia and would give a huge boost to the league.
There are three players from Nelson in the current Canterbury United squad (Turipa, Kaua, White), while Billy Scott plays for Team Wellington.
Nelson has a good crop of young players currently with the Nelson Marlborough Falcons winning the 2014 ASB Youth League and Nelson College winning the New Zealand secondary schools championship earlier this year.

But there's one thing he would love to do when he retires from the professional game.
"There's nothing I'd like more than to represent Nelson in the national league. The reason I'm where I am today all comes back to Nelson. The hard yards I put in as a kid at Saxton Field and Jubilee Park. My close mates Mike Bothwell, Glen Pearless, Matt Mitchell, Mike White, Matt Elliot...the list goes on. Coaches that worked so hard with me; Steve Bignall, George Campbell, Brendan Crichton...again the list goes on," he said.
"I'd love to run out one day with a Tasman United shirt on representing and giving back to where it all started: Nelson."

Julian Bowden CEO of Mainland Football backs Nelson's ASB Premiership franchise bid Tasman United:
Probably the biggest regular season crowd for an ASB Premiership match outside of games held as curtain raisers for Phoenix matches, was the 2500 who turned out in Nelson to watch Canterbury United play Team Wellington in 2011.
Having grown up in Nelson, it's largely horticultural rather than agricultural and a lot of those people like football. A large number of British and European immigrants too, as well as holiday makers visiting over the summer.
For a small town, there's always been a fair number of football-orientated pubs. In the 1990's I remember the Hotel Nelson being a major football hub, hosting Nelson United's national league after-match functions, sponsoring the team and Bartram Suri living upstairs.

What a great comment from Brockie. Always impressed with the organisation and efforts of George and Co. in the early days of Mainland.
It was impressive in its lack of restrictions and structures. Some great kids out there working enthusiastically across the grades, learning from each other, with some real football people coaching them..
Lets not forget Nelson never played there way out of any national league, always a challenge right back through the 70's. A real Football town. Love to see them going again.
Whats the gossip on signings? Surely Tavich wil get the job

Probably shouldn't have used a gradient. The more I look the more I pick out. Still better than some A-League badges.
Yeah the gradient is a bit weird. Not convinced by the shape of the badge either. Could easily have kept it the classic badge shape. And not sure what the white circle behind the ball is.
I guess the vignette will only be used on digital iterations of the brand. Ship's been used plenty of times...sponsor opportunity ;)

Kotahitanga. We are one.
They should be smooth. may be some distortion when it was saved as a jpg file, especially if it's not on highest setting.
But also the word Tasman (and United a little bit too) doesn't follow the same curve of the sash which I think makes the lower curve seem a little more angular.
The curve of the wording could explain most of it. jpg compression hopefully the rest.
Not a bad badge overall. I like the subtly of some of the nautical themes like the ships wheel as the patch shape on the ball
Graphic design thread needed for club crests...
Also, while I'm at it....the Tasman region is located west of Nelson and doesn't even include Nelson City, let alone Blenheim on the east coast. However they've adopted the Tasman rugby union approach of incorporating Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough districts under the Tasman umbrella. Really though it's Top of the South United. But as junior GG was born in the Tasman district, I'm cool with that.
Will be interesting to see who they pick as coach, some mate of Brockie's by the looks of things?

It turns out that the hero who was in the world news rescuing the baby from the car which went off the pier in Derry, Northern Ireland was former Nelson Suburbs striker Davitt Walsh who came out from Ireland to play for them in the Mainland Premier League in 2014.
He'd played in the top leagues in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.
After the car went off the pier, Davitt dived in and the father passed him his baby before the car sank under the water and the father and four other family members remaining in it died. Only the mother, who was not present, survived.
