New National League format in 2027

Finally the announcement we've been waiting for:

Details confirmed for new look national competition to bring full season, club-based Winter leagues to the men’s and women’s game

Double-round, fully national, club-based competitions for both the men’s and women’s game
10-team women’s competition and 12-team men’s competition
Full league season followed by a finals series
All games broadcast live and free
Significant increase in investment to deliver a full top-tier national season integrated into the football pyramid
Kicking off in late March 2027

I think it's good that they're making it F2A, last thing we need in a new league like this is putting it behind a paywall. Assuming it'll be on fifa+ / DAZN

What is a double round basis? I'm assuming they are carefully not saying home and away?

Double-round robin means every team plays the other twice. You are correct, they have not said home and away but I imagine that will likely be the case.

can you expand to show the next one or two teams that are or were in contention. Also should Central/South women have an adjustment for different league sizes each season (I suspect it doesn't matter given teams in contention were in the leage each year)?

Pretty tight between Springs & AU in the Northern league. Likely playoff teams are
AU/Springs, Western Suburbs, ChCh

And based on this years results could be a long national league for Nix reserves next year. Having said that it looks like it has been a changing of the guard season with many senior players from last year departing and some fresh new faces promoted up this season. With a season of Central league experience under their belt they will be better prepared next year.

Presumably the Squires will just stay at Fred Taylor Park. Reserves sides aren't typically well attended

Cheers, I didn't realise that was their regular home ground. Looks only slightly harder for the casual visitor to get to than North Harbour, so I'm ok with that.

I mean as long as they don't completely suck I feel like it shouldn't be too big of an issue. No one wants to be the club that finished 10th but gets relegated anyway because 12 and 11 were reserve sides. Would start to get a bit awkward with a third reserve side in the mix though, then you'd have a quarter of the league exempt from relegation

I imagine they'll expand up to 14 teams if/when Chch gets an A-League side (at least, that's probably the sensible move).

So long as the reserve sides can maintain a level of competitiveness (i.e. not get routinely thrashed), then I personally don't think it should be a big deal, even if they are often finishing as the worst sides sunce they basically operate in a different world to the other clubs. In saying that, somebody will inevitable kick up a fuss when they are relegated in 11th place.

What if they made it so reserve sides could get relegated but only to div 2? In Aus the A league reserve sides aren't immune from relegation so it's not too out there of a concept. I feel like it's a fair compromise. If they're in the NL then it means they deserve it, and if not they can be more or less out of sight, but not out of reach from the NL.

Reserve sides, guaranteed spots. Can't win (or make finals), can't get relegated. Makes sure our (hopefully top) young players are getting experience at a good level.

the Nix sides being promoted relegated is almost a moot point, Cap footy and the Nix have agreed to this to avouind having two Nix teams in the same grades. Cap footy do the same at the higher levels of the leages - ie allow only one club team in the grade.
