New National League format in 2027

Finally the announcement we've been waiting for:

Details confirmed for new look national competition to bring full season, club-based Winter leagues to the men’s and women’s game

Double-round, fully national, club-based competitions for both the men’s and women’s game
10-team women’s competition and 12-team men’s competition
Full league season followed by a finals series
All games broadcast live and free
Significant increase in investment to deliver a full top-tier national season integrated into the football pyramid
Kicking off in late March 2027

I think it's good that they're making it F2A, last thing we need in a new league like this is putting it behind a paywall. Assuming it'll be on fifa+ / DAZN

What is a double round basis? I'm assuming they are carefully not saying home and away?

Double-round robin means every team plays the other twice. You are correct, they have not said home and away but I imagine that will likely be the case.

can you expand to show the next one or two teams that are or were in contention. Also should Central/South women have an adjustment for different league sizes each season (I suspect it doesn't matter given teams in contention were in the leage each year)?

Pretty tight between Springs & AU in the Northern league. Likely playoff teams are
AU/Springs, Western Suburbs, ChCh

And based on this years results could be a long national league for Nix reserves next year. Having said that it looks like it has been a changing of the guard season with many senior players from last year departing and some fresh new faces promoted up this season. With a season of Central league experience under their belt they will be better prepared next year.

Presumably the Squires will just stay at Fred Taylor Park. Reserves sides aren't typically well attended

Cheers, I didn't realise that was their regular home ground. Looks only slightly harder for the casual visitor to get to than North Harbour, so I'm ok with that.

I mean as long as they don't completely suck I feel like it shouldn't be too big of an issue. No one wants to be the club that finished 10th but gets relegated anyway because 12 and 11 were reserve sides. Would start to get a bit awkward with a third reserve side in the mix though, then you'd have a quarter of the league exempt from relegation

I imagine they'll expand up to 14 teams if/when Chch gets an A-League side (at least, that's probably the sensible move).

So long as the reserve sides can maintain a level of competitiveness (i.e. not get routinely thrashed), then I personally don't think it should be a big deal, even if they are often finishing as the worst sides sunce they basically operate in a different world to the other clubs. In saying that, somebody will inevitable kick up a fuss when they are relegated in 11th place.

What if they made it so reserve sides could get relegated but only to div 2? In Aus the A league reserve sides aren't immune from relegation so it's not too out there of a concept. I feel like it's a fair compromise. If they're in the NL then it means they deserve it, and if not they can be more or less out of sight, but not out of reach from the NL.

the Nix sides being promoted relegated is almost a moot point, Cap footy and the Nix have agreed to this to avouind having two Nix teams in the same grades. Cap footy do the same at the higher levels of the leages - ie allow only one club team in the grade.

For completeness you really should put how the Weenix have gone over the five years too to show they aren't completely robbing a spot in the league as some may suggest. They are thereabouts on merit.

Just comparing with fourth ranked Western Suburbs they have equivalent "raw" results with potential for WeeNix to improve on their current 9th* (W. Suburbs are 4th^ and seemingly the best they can hope for). More recent season results give Suburbs the edge I guess.

I believe that the position of the reserve sides is excluded from the calculation so any team placed after AFCR or WPR effectively gets an extra placing point (presumably so the reserve sides who do not have to qualify do not impact the qualification process).

I have exactly the same numbers (albeit to 2 decimal places) as per the numbers quoted earlier.

By my calculations Olympic, Cashmere and City have already secured a spot (pending issue of club licence which I think also comes into play in addition to this performance criteria).

Is it crazy to say Western Suburbs could snatch the final NL spot? Looking at it all so far it looks like it'll be Auckland United vs Western Suburbs vs Christchurch United, and I feel like that's pretty winable for Suburbs.

I'd still fancy Auckland United tbh. WS form this half of the season hasn't been great, and 6th in NL vs 4th in CL is a pretty even call on paper (NLC over last few years illustrates this).

It's probably Auckland's to lose. Chch have struggled to gather any consistency despite the signings. I believe they've only won 2 in their last 9, albeit they're unbeaten in their last 4. But those wins came against Wanaka and Selwyn so nothing to brag about.
Wests have only really won on game that they shouldn't of this season against Miramar. Have tallied up 5 draws this season, tied the most out of Central League with Nix.

Wests can still beat Miramar to the third spot as Miramar have to play Napier and Wests and if Miramar lose both then Wests can qualify if they win their other remaining games.

Napier's win against Petone yesterday virtually guarantees them National League as they are 9 points ahead of Wests with 3 games to play and a massive superior goal difference.

Has there been much change in these with a week to go now? Coastal Spirit locked in as the second Southern team now alongside Cashmere Technical, while Christchurch United will feature in the playoffs.

Central is all sewn up - Olympic, NCR and Miramar are in with Wests in the playoffs (same 3 have qualified for NL 2026).

In Northern Birko, City and Eastern Suburbs are in with Auckland United all but there (would need to lose by 10 to East Coast Bays next weekend to miss out to likely playoff bound Western Springs. For NL 2026 the same three (Birko, City, Suburbs) are also in while United only need to match Fencibles result next week (without their GD relative to Fencibles dropping by more than 4 goals) to join them.

How does the promoted side get chosen? I.e the format for each match? ET+penalties could still result in 3 teams with one won, one loss each?
