@youngheart, your mate scored! he's a good player isn't he
I'm very happy for him. Could have had at least one more too.

I hope he goes well. If he plays a majority of the minutes for Auckland he'll be up there in the golden boot race.

Gillion seems too good for this league. I feel like he'd suit the Nix as we lack speedy, technical,  exciting players and he would at least be good off the bench. Isn't he from Wellington?

Faulds a bit disappointing despite scoring and haven't noticed Van Hattum do much sadly.

He just needs to practice on his finishing. Runs a lot, has close ball skills but the end product or lack of, is holding him back.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!

First impressions, AFC are the better team.

Gillion does look that bit more classy then the rest. Saying that Norman and Drake look decent midfielders who potentially could do a job at A league level.

i really rate drake. pretty sure he trialled / trained with AFC last season?

Drake has yes impressed. If Rufer moves on, might be worth a trial at the Nix.

Wow Ellis goes down very easily there

Well you would in that situation, wouldn't you... Zeb had the running of him there
17 Jan 07:20
David Yoo I feel like has been pretty decent for SUI. He tends to hold onto the ball longer than he should at times but he's causing some problems for Auckland

Drake has been good for years

Have to say Auckland FCs depth in this competition is very strong. Think many of the island teams will struggle against them
17 Jan 07:32
Bring on Danny Boys
17 Jan 07:34
A reoccurring problem for South is that they're noticeably slower than Auckland and it's not even just play style, the Auckland players just look faster on average. It's really hindering their build-up especially on the counter where Auckland players keeping hunting them down.

It's surprising too because they have a younger team that should be fitter

That's not a penalty btw because it deflects off his body??
17 Jan 07:42
If this is given, it's a shocking decision...
17 Jan 07:43
i don't know the rules

am i correct in assuming they're looking at this handball because it deflected off his foot instead of his body? surely otherwise it's a close range deflection.

I feel Gillion is in a similar situation to Piper where they both have big upsides and passion, but very obvious, exploitable flaws which overshadow their talent.

Piper has improved his flaws a lot the more game time/experience he has gotten in a pro environment where his flaws are exploited more than the NZ league.

I feel Gillion in a Nix environment where he gets consistent game time/experience and is more of a "star" player, would improve his flaws significantly and be a valuable player like Piper is/will be for us.

They really should win this league.
Lets watch Sth Melbourne first. Though if SM win the league, it will be 2nd who gets to the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and a nice cash windfall.

Given their financials, absolutely should stroll this over most. Might the Aussie team be the only competition?

brilliant goal! robinson looks a baller

Wow that was an excellently worked goal

Watching Auckland as a Nix fan feels like letting a clown squirt water in your face with a flower sometimes

i know south island united have priorised a young-ish team, but really wish they signed an experienced campaigner like Reid Drake in midfield. Just feels like they've been dominated there today
17 Jan 07:49
If AFC don't walk this league it will be embarrassing for them.

Gutted as this could turn out to be a 100% participant rate for them in CWCs.
17 Jan 07:52
Jeez they could have some one-sided matches in this comp. How much of their team is U23 btw?
17 Jan 07:53
Just realised there's a Phoenix X Auckland flag in the port section which is interesting to say the least

The dangerous thing for the A-League (not just a Nix thing) is that if they want to sign players for the A-League and unsure just get them to do a season in the OFC League.

Any upcoming player go to the WP Academy or go to the OFC League? I know what many would decide.
17 Jan 07:56
i'm surprised that south island aren't playing 'edwards ball'

i know he's not coaching, but i wondered if they might adopt his style. their style is fiine imo btw and sherman's his own man. i'm sure they'll improve and will probably have no trouble generating support when they play auckland in the pacific later in the comp.

quite right.

the nix should feel free to form relationships with some of the other teams, incl south island united.

anyone know the crowd?
17 Jan 08:02
Welp, yet another pro kiwi club eats sharke against Auckland. At least we ain't the only ones and y'know what? At least South went out with a good looking jersey xD

3-0 fair result. SIU were pretty pedestrian. Guys like OVH were disappointing.
Their midfield basically non existent. Feutz had crumbs to work with. Still very early days. I mean I don't think they even had a warm up game.

But yeah AFC II definitely one of the favourites to win this comp. Again the 3 Island hubs will be 'levellers'.

Crowd 5,000 or so? Maybe a bit more
17 Jan 08:04
THe definition of a football derby in NZ is when two sides play each other for 90 minutes and Auckland wins.....

Decent for AFC II - I know its the first game but doesn't look good if the Nix can't get 3,500 for a home game.

It's hard to compare but it's would be like if Liverpool Reserves vs Port Vale got a bigger crowd than Sunderland vs Fulham (after a 2 for 1 special).
17 Jan 08:32
Really early days for this comp. As the coaches said no warm up games and no opportunity to have seen the the oppostion play makes it tough. SIU will do ok. They have some good players. Yoo looked tidy and their central defenders are strong.
There could be some one sided games in this competition. From what we saw earlier today the PI sides have lots of work to do.
I think Sth Melbourne will be the best side.

18 Jan 00:00
Any reason why TAB doesn't cover this competition, but covers regional brazilian leagues and mexican u21 league?

South Melbourne vs Tahiti United up next. South Melbourne are the team I picked to win it all so will be interesting to see how this plays out (at least for me)

They'll win by about 3 or 4 imo. South Melbourne best or second best team on paper and Tahitis is perhaps the weakest.

That said though - Tahiti have been stubbornly defensive in some OFC international games so if that carries over could be closer than expected.
18 Jan 00:20
Wow south melbourne dominate the opening 15 mins, threatening a lot from long throws, then all of a sudden Tahiti United score on a counter... miles offside yes, but gave them a scare.
