Ha! That's a good one. Where do you get your material? You should go on tour with it I reckon.

Obviously the mainland premier league is going well if you're in here trolling. Saw a game when in Chch a month ago. Dire to be fair. GI are a good team and will be a test for the Cavy scabs but won't get within a couple of goals.

Sheesh, tough crowd down south huh?

It was an honest question as to what clubs the Southern Utd Irish players are playing in, and if you can't dig that, then don't worry.

As you were.

I hate baseless rubbish like this, "worst for a long time", you sound like Abe Simpson.

Particularly having decent Queenstown & Southland teams in the comp this year is a big step up from last year.

Green Island have found a balance of having a couple of experienced & classy operators joining the talented youngsters they seem to produce (most of whom have 1 or 2 years experience at this level now). And Brazier has been an absolute beast, just bossing it.

Hard to see them not getting bullied by Cavy (because that's precisely what they did, in every sense of the word, last week against a decent Roslyn team by all accounts).

In reference to overall quality of the players involved that is and mostly related to the Dunedin teams that aren't near the top of the table. If it was not struggling I doubt we would be seeing FS trying to find anyway possible to get a South Island league going ASAP.

South Island league other than Cavy playing Cash Tech at the end of each season won't happen in the next three or more years.

Not enough money in the sport in NZ to make it a go for most clubs.

CashTech and Coastal would have the coin then lower teams Chch United also other than that the rest of MPL clubs would face tough times to be involved. I don't expect Cavy will find it too easy to fund a full Southern League season how about the other Southern clubs?

ILT probably fund inercargill and queenstown entires. Agree re other comments. I used to be a supporter of SI  league but with national league changes any club with ambition should be aiming for that. Chch Utd will.

The Dunedin-based side, who play some of their home games in the Forsyth Barr Stadium where the Lions played on Tuesday, are on the lower end of the scale when it comes to budgets.

"The top teams like Auckland City and Team Wellington win the equivalent of the Champions League every year and play in the Club World Cup," Ledwith says.

"They're excellent; Auckland especially is full of South American and Spanish players, it's hard to get near the ball.

"You don't get many nil-all draws. There was one earlier in the season and it was the first time in 10 years or something! It is a bit different from back home.

"Technically, the likes of Auckland City and Wellington would easily compete with the likes of Cork, Dundalk and Rovers, but other teams would struggle defensively. Paul has tried to put that in us a little bit.

"There was massive improvements made last year from what we hear, it was our first year but everyone around the city was full of praise for how well we'd done. But from our point of view it was a relatively poor season, not finishing higher."

With that name Zubikarai is obviously Basque, and the EH Bildu Party would hotly deny that that's Spanish.

Looks like a good scrap for 2nd spot this year. If we just forget about Cavy and pretend 2nd is 1st this is looking like a very even, strong and well contested league. My pick is for Tech to finish 1st (2nd) once all is done and dusted.

If you look at the history though. Lots of talk how good the other clubs are but it's always ended up Cavy, Tech. For mine, despite the slow start it looks no different and history will again repeat.

No show of Tech being up in the top 3 this season. Cavy having a laugh at the rest of the teams again.

Be a big weekend for the Chatham Cup next week see how strong the SPL & MPL teams are.

left it a wee bit late Kennedy, Qtown should get home for 2nd

in other news, who's the chav called Irish that plays for Roslyn? talk about a absolute big timer giving it to Henderson when they went 2-1 up only to be clapped off by Rhys when he got subbed at 4-2 down. Good to see Roslyn carrying on their tradition with a new generation of mincers..

Nelson subs are average in the MPL but far too good for QT. Hmm what does that say about Queenstown Rovers never mind Tech and the rest of the SPL below Cavy.

Southern League yeah right, I've got more show of getting a free Emersons a week at the Elmwood Trading Co than a SI league starting again.

That result certainly has raised some eyebrows as to the merit of a South Island league. Suburbs aren't too bad though, they've just been awful on the road. Haven't lost to Tech by any more than Caversham did.

Rhys did it first when they went 1-0 up. nothing wrong with any of that, good on him for clapping for him when he went off, another pointless post..

If Caversham win their next three games then the leagues all over for another year. Bit boring, eh?

Which teams even have the structure and links to be able to do so?

Spot on. It is not Caversham's job to lower their standards to make it a more 'enjoyable' league. Nor should it be

Probably good for a red or two, he punched me during a game once!

So 7/8/9 players out of the starting 11 this summer will likely have been born out of NZ? That should strengthen Otago football

I mean, if the alternative is no national league football then Otago football is better off putting whoever they can on the pitch.

Player development happens on the training pitch, not during matches (for the most part). If squad players and youth team members are training week in, week out with higher quality players bought in from other regions and other countries, then that can only be beneficial for football in the region.

I don't know if Southern Football gets imports to run academies and youth teams like they do in Nelson, but that's another no brainer for using out of region expertise to develop local players.

Yes its a high number of imports, but as long as they are deserving of their spots and not preventing more deserving locals from playing they are strengthening football in the region, not weakening it.

Exactly. Plus, if he has lived here for 10 of his 22 years and went to high school here, surely he should be seen as a South Islander. He can easily get citizenship, not sure how long that process takes though. With no commitments to winter teams, it's possible to think he might stay on and play in Dunedin next year too.
