The man seriously injured in a dog attack in Wellington today is believed to be former All White Stu Jacobs.

The 45-year-old Team Wellington Coach is said to have suffered serious injuries to his hands, legs and arms while trying to break up a fight between an Alsatian cross and Bull Mastiff in Rongotai this morning.

Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean says they are investigating the attack to see if charges should be laid or either of the dogs should be destroyed.

"It's too early at the moment to say what we're going to be doing. I mean there is an issue with the fact that the Bull Mastiff obviously went in and attacked the other dog, according to all witnesses. But we just obviously have to talk to a few more people."

Mr MacLean says they are currently holding the Bull Mastiff at the pound.

Woah. Saw a headline on the airport bus this afternoon, didn't he intervene on another attack or something?

that's what the article said. Apparently he tried to break up a fight between two dogs.
Best wishes to him, hope he's ok. That's not something you'd want to wish to anyone, being attacked by a big dog.

Former All White and current Wellington provincial football coach Stu Jacobs is nursing some gruesome wounds after being savaged by a dog while trying to stop it fighting another dog on a school field this afternoon.

Jacobs said he had been holding a coaching clinic for young children at Wellington's Rongotai College when he saw an unrestrained bullmastiff dog attack what appeared to be a labrador being walked on a leash.

He said he noticed the owner of the labrador was struggling with the situation so he went over and helped try to separate the animals, "and the rest was history".

Jacobs was driven to hospital and was left recovering tonight after getting 34 stitches during a three-hour operation.

He told NZPA the bullmastiff first latched onto his ankle and then switched to his forearm when he managed to free the ankle.

It then latched onto his thumb and shredded it before being brought under control.

Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said the bullmastiff was impounded and was initially going to be put down tomorrow, but had since had a "stay of execution" until authorities were sure exactly how the incident had played out.

The labrador was understood to have been taken to a vet for treatment.

Jacobs said he was in no doubt as to which animal was the aggressor. He said the bullmastiff had gone for the labrador and the attacking dog's owner had not appeared in any hurry to come and break up the fighting.

He said he would be loathe to see the bullmastiff back out among the public.

"My concern is if it had of been one of the little kiddies...they just wouldn't stand a chance. Dogs like this don't deserve to be walking about."

Jacobs said there were witnesses to the incident and was sure they would be able to give a clear account to investigating police of what happened.

Meanwhile, he said the mauling had left him with restricted muscle movement in his arm, but hoped his injuries would recover fully.

Having owned both breeds in the past I know that Stu would have needed a Lochead to get out unscathed with a bull mastiff. Good on him for balls though.

Honesty, they should legalise Mace and spray the Bull Mastiff and then the Bull Mastiff Owner for being a lazy p***k

There are so many ignorant f**ks who "walk" their dogs in public places frequented by other people and dogs, such as parks, without having them on leads. If you advise them politely that they are required to have their dog on a lead you get what you would expect from an ignorant f**k - a gob full of abuse and the standard answer - my dog wouldn't hurt anyone.

No one knows or can guarentee what their dog will do in all circumstances, particularly around another dog or when being " chased" by kids.

I applaude Stu's bravery, thank god it wasn't a kid involved and hope the dog owner gets prosecuted.

Maybe the Bull Mastiff was on a leash but it was being held by Reece Crowther...

Yeah i used to deliver pamphlets (up timberlea even). Most dogs act great when their owners are around, but as soon as they arent they can go all vicious.

Also had another instance where i was going back to my cousins place, and the dog was going off at me,nearly biting my hand off whenever i touched the gate,my cousin comes up,dog goes peaceful,i get laughed at for not just coming in because "he wouldnt hurt anyone, see, just look at him"

People have no idea.

Ditto.  Good on you Stu for putting the kids in your charge (safety) before yourself.  We need more people like you.

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

I didnt say every dog did I. I came across many dogs during that pamphlet run, some were ok. Just some werent, and their owners had no idea,as i said above. Then told about my cousins dog as an example.

The dog usually calms down when their owner is around, which is why they probably let them walk around without a leash, they have NEVER seen their dog go out of control, and think their dog is more special than any other and would never bite someone. Hard truth is,you can never say that for certain,so keep it within your fence and on a freakin' leash.

fair enough. it sounded like you were tarring all with the same brush. I agree some dogs are unapproachable ie: rottweillers that are trained as guard dogs. As for your last line, again i hope you are only talking in some cases.  Infact the unsocialised, locked up dogs are the most dangerous.

Im just saying keep the dog within your property, and on a leash when your out. Pretty standard stuff. Im not having a go at dogs, just saying that they CAN be unpredictable (hence the laws of keeping ALL dogs on a leash and that theyre not to be wandering outside your propertly alone).

I am actually not specifying breeds,im saying any breed can be unpredictable in certain situations. Im not saying all dogs are bad. Just that even the chance of a dog going out of control is enough to have to keep them on a leash and secured in your property,as the law states. I included the examples to show that yes i have had bad experiences, where the owners have no idea that their dog is bad and wouldnt believe me when ive told them what happened.

"you just hate dogs" is the line...and seems to be what you're getting at too (roughly). When in fact i love them.

that isnt the law though. every city or district council has there own bylaws ie: in chch dogs on leash between flags at beach. you are required by law to have a leash with you, but the dog doesnt have to be on it at all times. good luck excercisng a dog with only a leash and stopping them being able to swim etc not saying you hate dogs, just way too much hysteria about them in NZ. nearly 500,000 dogs in NZ and about 4-5 media reported attacks a year, mainly due to poor owners. you have a better chance of a home invasion.bringbacksmeltz2010-01-22 13:21:18

4-5 that you know about (serious ones)? I think a dog would bite someone more than 4-5 times a year. Im not saying muzzle them, just keep them securely in your property, good fence and all (not roaming the street)...and to have them leashed in public places (that is with lots of people and other dogs around e.g between the flags at the beach,as you said).

Not rocket science

you originally said leashed at all times as required by law but hey whatever i wont be losing any sleep mate.
we seem to agree now anyways. The owner should know when to leash them and in this case they didnt. blame lies with him,not the dog

License all dog owners. Half the people who own dogs aren't fit to.
Personally I carry a knife and stick with me on walks with my Wolfhound/Lab cross.
Even though he's a big boy as the 'pack leader' I have to protect him.
If a dog ever attack mine I would deal to it, then probably be sick as its not generally the dogs fault but more likely the moronic owner.
Big ups for Stu. A man.
Once again, license all dog owners.
Just maybe this would reduce attacks, save 1,000's of dogs being mistreated and 1,000's of dogs being putdown every year.

LOL, nope. I need a reason to.
Think you'll find they don't, as knifes and sticks would be standard, e.g. socks-check, shoes-check, pants-check, knife-check, shirt-check etc...
