For the next NZFC season . Do people have any players they think Team Wellington should recruit in order to make a serious challenge for the NZFC.

Having watched a few Central league games this season  I think the following players would step up to that level.

Lower Hutt - Matt Adams , Steven Gully , Dan Raynor and Luis Corrales.
Stop Out - Garry McDermott , Wayne Rooker and Asone Walrond
Miramar - Sasha Natu , Wiremu Patrick , Dominic Rowe and Michael Eager.
Wests - Sam Peters , Ben Fields and Phil Imray
Olympic - Raf ( If Fit) , Mikey and George as well as Shaun Easthope

From outside the area Robert Gill ( Gisbourne) could be the consistent goalscorer Team Wellington have lacked.

Having also watched the Central league select XI last Friday players like Craig and Trent who played as the two centre backs should be looked at by Team Wellington as that is a position that most supporters would say needs to be strengthen. Add to that players like Karl Whalen , Andy Barron and Peter Halstead and you may have the beginning of a very good squad.

Is Andy Barron going to be with Team Wellington next season?

Not Sure . But if he was available Stu Jacobs should try and persuade him that Wellington will be more competitive than Canterbury . Still wonder why he  has not been picked up by the Phoenix . Played right back on Friday for the Central league XI  and looked good against the Phoenix attack and almost scored a cracker of a free kick from about 35 yards .

canterbury coach danny halligan has stated that barron will be with them if he doesn't get a phoenix contract.

i reckon jacobs should look at establish nzfc players for team wellington.  ian robinson has made it known that he is looking for another team, phil imre is from the area and was outstanding for manawatu last season, bryan little should be asked back from auckland and therev are many more.

i also think that the full quota of imports should be used.  i never got to see nate winkel play last year, was he any good?

of your list above i would agree that peters, corrales, rowe and rooker would be worth a look.  i'd add butterfield (if available) and simon george to the list as well (not sure if you meant him when you said george).

it will be interesting to see who is signed.  i gather they are interested in winning the comp this year and not just developing kids

By no stretch of the imagination is Team Wellington more competitive than Canterbury United.

Team Wellington could be more competive . We have the player base . The reason for the failure over the last few years is that we had a coaching team that failed to get the best out of the players and in my opinion recruited poorly . It has been plan to see from Day one that we needed both a  quality centre back and a 15+ goals a season striker. Yet none were recruited in three years .

Having watch Stu Jacobs teams play over the last couple of years they tend to play good attacking football  while being defensively sound . He is more than a match for Danny Halligan in the coaching department.

Team Wellington have the potential to be far better than Canterbury

Have they ever been better than Canterbury?  Not for a while surely...

Never, actually.

Team Wellington have to get it right at the back.  Consistently they have conceded goals, and I think that starts with a goalkeeper.  Jimmy B was good last year but struggled behind a defence that probably lacked a bit of pace.

Nate Winkel certainly wasn't better than anything in the Central League, the best import by far was the Korean guy.  He was pure class and reports from in the camp were that he was a true professional, they rated him very highly.

Wellington never replaced Bryan Little's goals either, he pretty much got them into the playoffs with his hot streak at the end of the 2006 season.

I heard murmerings of a rule that because the Wellington clubs fund Team Wellington, all playrs had to be eligible for one of the member clubs.  I think whatever happens Mark CHote and Dave Farrington will bring a harder edge to the on field performances.  They won't accept a development approach.

Good point regarding the development approach. As a "representative" team, why would you need to be developing players? Surely that should happen at their respective clubs. We have a similar issue in ChCh where Cant Utd is at times treated as though it were a separate club rather than a representative team.

Reckon opinion is right on the decision making of the mgmt at TW.  In fairness when Jim B was dropped before the Manawatu game, Tw had only conceded 14 goals in 14 games.  Not a bad defensive record - especially given they had scored 26.  The problem was the 20 goals conceded after Jim was out of the picture and only scoring 11 in the final 7 games.  Even so, the class of 06/07 conceded 19 goals less than 05/06.  Goal scoring was the issue with 6 goals fewer scored in 06/07. Reckon Stu has the solutions though...

I hope that's the case, and if Sigmund doesn't get offered an a-league contract I hope he will come back to Canterbury United.

sigmund's stated that if he doesn't get an a-league contract, he is going to stay in vistoria playing for the fawkner blues until at least the end of their season.  who knows after that?!

the season is fast approaching and i was just wondering how the squad is shaping up,

how big will the squad be?

signed any internationals?

confirmed signings?

trialists?

lets compile a list and see what we got so far, with stu jacobs in charge i think we got a good chance this year!

I think all of these details are pretty hazy, especially as Wests still haven't completed their season.  They'll have to have a strong representation in the squad you'd think

Rumour has it there was a TW trial last night. Any feed back from anyone, who was included etc. We seem to be a little later than the other clubs. I believe Hawkes Bay United started training last night.

George will make it im sure and new trialist i think was Anthony Neonakis from Olympic. Not sure about Mikey. Probably. But im betting ull see alot of Wests players in the team not only caz there a good side but the coach is Stu Jacobs.

It was an 8 on 8 game without Wests players.  Quite a few felt that the side was already picked and that it was just done for appearances.  28 man squad will be named soon apparently.

Wests have been the dominant team in Wellington this year, they deserve a strong representation in the squad.  Wellington need a striker, bad...because that is the one area that Wests lack in...(Dave Johnson and Rupe are probably just a bit past it now).
