I believe that margetts and windust were wanted but both declined

Not sure on Parkinson's and jasper. Think they were talked to but nothing has come of it.

Hobson.mc going elsewhere ...

As I've said before there's enough home based players to be competitive...

In short, no, all the keepers in Waikato are old guys bar Danyon Drake, a promising young keeper at Narra, not sure if he's quite up to the ASPB level yet though.

will get one. Think he is 24 and maybe played for HIbs and was maybe at Southampton as a kid with Walcott. Done coaching badges

Wow, just looked him up, that'd be a huge pick-up. Will have to investigate further.

A little unfair on the likes of Rueben Parker, Drake will definitely be in the squad, after all his dad is on the coaching staff

I'm talking here and now, Parker is a good prospect but there's no way you chuck in him at national level after he's only made 2/3 appearances for Wanderers.

Nikolic, Manko and Konings signed, that's a pretty decent haul considering there's still half the squad to be announced.

Permalink Permalink

Maxim Manko will be of some use to WaiBOP. Milos.....well you take what you get and he is definitely not good enough for the two Auckland teams (if any of them)

Agreed. What I like about the signings is that they've been announced early, there's still plenty of more players to come who are hopefully of a similar quality, and that they're of a decent calibre, Milos went well with us last time and hopefully won't be our main target, I would enjoy him as a second-string striker, and Manko is very versatile and also went well with Waikato before.

One thing that interested me is Peter Smith talking about his "eye for goal", whether that means he'll be playing up front I'm not sure, personally I think the best way to optimise his talents would be in the midfield somewhere, he's rangy with some nice pace. He could even fill the troublesome wingback role if required.

I thought Cossey was harshly dismissed by the national league side, but I'm enjoying the Peter Smith era so far, he's got a very good eye for talent, I've been in agreement with all of his decisions, a nice squad is building.

I agree. Peter Smith had to come out strong and I think he has

While still struggling with the name, I would like to see WaiBOP pose a decent challenge to the top four teams. Would be nice if they could rouse some interest in the ASBP in the Waikato/BoP.

this is all very encouraging - it' good to see this franchise getting it's shit together

Milos sure can hit a ball, great technique in front of goal. But he does lack elsewhere.

Some reasonable signings so far, looking good.

Milos & Manko ... Hmmm. Hope it won't turn into a comedy double act. Either way you guys on the sideline should have lots to shout about.

Kinda what I thought Jerzy. I do not believe Milos has any football talent to be justified in ASPB.

Maxim is the better of the two of them but I guess it depends on what position he wants to play this week and at what club.

that's harsh in my opinion - 9 goals in 11 games last time out at Waikato and an overall record of something like a goal every 2 games indicates to me that he is someone who isn't out of his depth at this level.

I know him a little and he can be a little hard to get on with and comes across a little arrogant but he works damn hard on his game - i would say he is good depth in say an Auckland City team and would be pushing to start in a Waikato team.

Put it this way JV - would you prefer RoryT or Milos?

Permalink Permalink

Oh don't get me wrong. He will start at Waikato purely because there is no one else. Of those 9 goals, how many were flick ons and penalties..... That will answer your question. He's the guy that's there and taps it in when it bounces off the post. Yes he scored them, but more for being Johnny on the spot. I guess in that respect, I should give him props for having that instinct.

The answer is I would probably want neither. Is Colin Gardyne interested in another go around at Y-bopamooloo? I'd take him over those two. Much higher work ethic and work rate AND can score goals.

This forum's very own N-Bomb (I think - the link in is signature on here is a pretty solid giveaway...) has written an excellent guestie for my blog looking at what an all-WaiBOP WaiBOP United team would look like.

Well worth checking out:

I love your signature Enzo, I'm in the picture....

Cool!! :-) You might be in a few others I took at that game too: http://in-the-back-of-the.net/2012/01/16/black-white-alright-come-on-the-bay/
Great day out for me, not so much for HBU...

Yes, I'm in a couple. Looking over those pics reminded me that I had seen Louis Fenton play before [in that game and I thought I'd never seen him or he didn't stand out]. I take all of that back, I do recall this kid who looked pretty special and it was Louis.

This is a cracking signing! It blows TW's signing of Spoonley out the water!! i give it a year and Mcneil will be in the phoenix set up, i have seen him play a few times he is not the biggest keeper but he is a great shot stopper!!

This is a good signing, you guys seem to be getting your act together for the coming season. Look forward to some good games between WaiBop and ACFC.

Congratulation's on a quality signing. I guess if people were writing you off as easy beats, you'll have a man in goal that will be tough to beat at the very least.

You can't deny that the changes down there are making good noises.

nice work waibop

team wellington are also making a few good signings, so for a few teams at least the league is shaping up quite nicely

it's also good to see teams breaking with the tradition of treating player signings as privileged information

For anyone that can be bothered (10 minute video...I got to about half way then started skipping it) it's quite a good watch of their new signing. Looks like he's got bags of experience which will be massive for mmmBop this season

WaiBOP sign Jack McNab (absolutely bundling in the goals down in Div 2, worth a shot) and Liam Higgins, he of NZ U-20 fame. Haven't seen him play much but has a decent pedigree and can play LB, a position which Waikato lacks depth in.

Every team in the country lacks depth at LB !  Where has I Hogg gone to anyway? Seems like he and Lochead have disappeared into some sort of Kiwi LB Bermuda triangle.

PS : Luke Rowe another half decent LB who's now disappeared, probably never be seen again. Odder and odder...

just watched Manko play against Waitak. Didn't look ASB prem quality, got subbed early in second half. May have just had a bad game

Permalink Permalink

Yeah I've seen him quite a bit, mainly two/three seasons ago with Waikato, he's certainly up to our level, but there's no way he would be starting for Waitak/Auck.

The squad is shaping up nicely, but they still need two decent midfielders to have a competitive side IMO. Maybe Windust can be persuaded to change his mind? He certainly would be a big help in the engine room. Jason Hicks perhaps? Auckland might be the way to go to find the calibre of player necessary.

To be fair to Manko, the whole BO team is playing like for an incoming pay cheque and a shit attitude. They have been pants.

He will do ok at Waikato purely cause there is no one else. Would he play for TW, Canty, ACFC, Waitakere? Nope. That there should surmise his ability

if you can get Hicks, sure. For me, he is one of the best left footers in the country. He will play at Waitakere now that every man and his dog are leaving and it's not a closed shop
