The old adage of if at first you don’t succeed try and try again certainly applies to Tom Doyle.

The talented 22-year-old has hit many speed bumps during his pursuit of a career as a professional footballer, but his perseverance paid off today when he signed a two-year contract with the Wellington Phoenix.

For the past couple of weeks everyone was expecting Doyle to be signed by coach Ernie Merrick, but after previous disappointments the Team Wellington and Miramar defender didn’t want to count his chickens.

So much so that, arriving back in Wellington after an outstanding performance against West Ham United in his Phoenix debut Doyle asked not to do any media interviews.

“I didn’t want to jinx it because I wanted it so much,” a smiling Doyle said today.

“I just wanted to keep my head down and show Ernie that I was up to the job.

“Hearing I was getting a contract was a massive relief and now I have to go for it and show the coach he has made the right decision.

“Since I was a five-year-old I’ve wanted to be a professional footballer because it is the best job in the world.”

Doyle, who began his playing career with Central United, will always be grateful for the help he received from former All White Danny Hay while playing for Sacred Heart 1st XI.

“Danny got me trials in England with Crewe Alexandra and Leyton Orient but it didn’t work out and when I returned to New Zealand I missed out on selection to the team for the Under-20 World Cup,” he says.

“That was a massive setback for me. It really shattered me.

“I then had to decide where to go to university. It was a toss-up between Wellington and America.

“Opting for Wellington allowed me to play for Miramar and I was chosen for the Phoenix’ Football School of Excellence.”

Doyle freely admits he didn’t take the opportunity offered to him at that time.

“Perhaps we were given too much when we went into that environment and were training with the first team every day,” he remembers.

“Some of the boys, notably Tyler (Boyd) and Louis (Fenton) were able to cope but I didn’t.

“I was living with seven mates in a ‘university type’ lifestyle and didn’t do myself justice at the FSE.”

It was a completely different Tom Doyle who came into the Phoenix environment at the start of this pre-season after showing how he had matured by captaining Miramar and being part of the leadership group with Team Wellington.

“I was gutted when I was released from the FSE and was determined it wouldn’t happen a second time,” he says.

“I now have sensible living arrangements, am eating well and preparing well.”

Doyle describes his debut against English Premier League side West Ham United as an “unreal” experience but says it is only the start of what he hopes will be a successful career.

“The hard work begins now,” he said.

“It is like going to university. Once you earn a place you have to work hard to get your degree.”

Doyle is doing a degree in Graphic Design at Massey University but has dropped his studies to part time to concentrate more on enjoying “the best job in the world”.
Judging by his performances in the Football Utd games, he certainly deserves a contract.

Good to see his perseverance paying off at age 22 and a local fullback is something the team needed.

I thought it looks like he's engaged in a telekinetic battle of the minds with an opposition player:

He's good.

Not completely convinced fullback is his "most suited" position.

A fan is a fan.

Impressed by him. Glad we've signed him.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I'm glad that he acknowledged he needed to grow up and realized how amendments to his lifestyle can help. Many young players are wasted because of a failture to do this. Good stuff mate.

Really pleased to see a new pro kiwi player coming through in a position nationally we have struggled and don't have much depth

Auckland will rise once more

Good signing, very pleased for the kid.

Now if we can get McGlinchey to take us up to 23. Would complete our best ever transfer window (IMO)

Ifill, Greenacre?

Ifill = Phenomenal for the club and all class.

Greenacre = Tenacious & Committed.

But we've brought in quality all round. McGlinchey signing on the dotted line would just top it all off.

The window before our second season when we brought in McKain, Durante, Sigmund, Muscat and Bertos along with Hearfield, Kwasnik, Gao and Mulligan (oops) was good.

You know we belong together...

Ernie's second season. This is when he's gotta do it.

Durante, Sigmund, Muscat are all essential names on the team sheet and have been great club men, as has Leo, who would have been an essential name as well, but for injury.

Excited to see a genuine NZ fullback prospect emerge, not get converted.

Lots of good signs here. Welcome Tom Doyle!

Guess Doyle is the final nail in the coffin of the Fenton experiment at right back.

That's not really what the stuff article was suggesting.

Fuck this stupid game

Well we now know that Roly, Boxall and Fenton can all cover right back in a pinch. JBS and Caira were looked on as players who were expected to mount a challenge for starting berths, but haven't done that and would be a bigger worry as cover than the first 3 at right back at this stage.

Congrats to Tom Doyle - despite my prev posts I am pleased we have another young kiwi on board.

I am definitely interested how our seven FB options pan out this season!

Roly, Manny, Fenton, Doyle, Caira, BS, Boxall.

Four really, with Roly, Fenton, Boxall also covering other positions.  Will be interesting how it plays.  And with a reserve team to also manage and give players game time, and potentially another 3 youth possies available if Ernie gets his way with FFA.  All pretty interesting/exciting.

Looking forward to the reserve team confirmation, Ernie landing three more youth positions, Adelaide, NZA, WSW and the season.  Go Doyle. Go Nix. Go Ernie. Go Welnix.

and is Caira injured or is something afoot that he's been left out of the Adelaide squad?

Simply sounds like he didn't make the grade based on the article. He'll have his work cut out for him to see good minutes this season I think.

If we do get another 3 youth players i hope they go for 3 u20 players in the Wanderer's squad. It can only help our u20 team for next years world cup to train and play with the Nix.

If not 3 "expected" u17 internationals.

Good news for Thomas hope he grows and we get a better Tom back in few years.

The Nix are slowly becoming a Bundesliga feeder club :-)  It’s all about personal contacts and I‘m pretty sure Singh and Doyle are good ambassadors for New Zealand. Now we need some more good players keen on coming to us.

god old Karl Marx Stadt eh? Chemnitz was one of the industrial hearts of the former east and built the best trabants in the land - pretty random place to end up but the facilities and training will probably be excellent knowing the German way of incorporating multiple sports into ‘football’ clubs - could be great fun if he gets to play against other Saxon clubs such as dynamo Dresden in the second bundesliga or red bull Leipzig the universally hated mercenary team on the other side of the state

Well there's Magdeburg, Zwickau, and Carl Zeiss all in 3. Bundesliga, so plenty of scope for old-style DDR derbies.

Came off the bench at 87 mins to debut in a 2-4 home loss to Meppen. Same score when he came on.

Chemnitzer lie 19th (2nd last) after 3 games.

Singh's Bayern II lost as well, and lie 17th.

They play each other August 25th,

This German fella Steinmann that we've been linked with over in the transfer speculation thread also spent some time on loan at Chemnitzer. Wonder if he picked up any Neo-Nazi tendencies.
